The increasing use of cloud computing for latency-sensitive applications has sparked renewed interest in providing tight bounds on network tail latency. Achieving this in practice at reasonable network utilization has proved elusive, due to a combination of highly bursty application demand, faster link speeds, and heavy-tailed message sizes. While priority scheduling can be used to reduce tail latency for some traffic, this comes at a cost of much worse delay behavior for all other traffic on the network. Most operators choose to run their networks at very low average utilization, despite the added cost, and yet still suffer poor tail behavior. This paper takes a different approach. We build a system, swp, to help operators (and network designers) to understand and control tail latency without relying on priority scheduling. As network workload changes, swp is designed to give real-time advice on the network switch configurations needed to maintain tail latency objectives for each traffic class. The core of swp is an efficient model for simulating the combined effect of traffic characteristics, end-to-end congestion control, and switch scheduling on service-level objectives (SLOs), along with an optimizer that adjusts switch-level scheduling weights assigned to each class. Using simulation across a diverse set of workloads with different SLOs, we show that to meet the same SLOs as swp provides, FIFO would require 65% greater link capacity, and 79% more for scenarios with tight SLOs on bursty traffic classes.

Age of Information is a new metric used in real-time status update tracking applications. It measures at the destination the time elapsed since the generation of the last received packet. In this paper, we consider the co-existence of critical and no ncritical status updates in a two-hop system, for which the network assigns different scheduling priorities. Specifically, the high priority is reserved to the packets that traverse the two nodes, as they experience worse latency performance. We obtain the distribution of the age and its natural upper bound termed peak age. We provide tight upper and lower bounds for priority updates and the exact expressions for the non-critical flow of packets with a general service distribution. The results give fundamental insights for the design of age-sensitive multi-hop systems.

Star sampling (SS) is a random sampling procedure on a graph wherein each sample consists of a randomly selected vertex (the star center) and its (one-hop) neighbors (the star points). We consider the use of SS to find any member of a target set of v ertices in a graph, where the figure of merit (cost) is either the expected number of samples (unit cost) or the expected number of star centers plus star points (linear cost) until a vertex in the target set is encountered, either as a star center or as a star point. We analyze these two performance measures on three related star sampling paradigms: SS with replacement (SSR), SS without center replacement (SSC), and SS without star replacement (SSS). Exact and approximate expressions are derived for the expected unit and linear costs of SSR, SSC, and SSS on ErdH{o}s-R{e}nyi (ER) random graphs. The approximations are seen to be accurate. SSC/SSS are notably better than SSR under unit cost for low-density ER graphs, while SSS is notably better than SSR/SSC under linear cost for low- to moderate-density ER graphs. Simulations on twelve real-world graphs shows the cost approximations to be of variable quality: the SSR and SSC approximations are uniformly accurate, while the SSS approximation, derived for an ER graph, is of variable accuracy.

In this paper, we propose an indoor localization system employing ordered sequence of access points (APs) based on received signal strength (RSS). Unlike existing indoor localization systems, our approach does not require any time-consuming and labor ious site survey phase to characterize the radio signals in the environment. To be precise, we construct the fingerprint map by cutting the layouts of the interested area into regions with only the knowledge of positions of APs. This can be done offline within a second and has a potential for practical use. The localization is then achieved by matching the ordered AP-sequence to the ones in the fingerprint map. Different from traditional fingerprinting that employing all APs information, we use only selected APs to perform localization, due to the fact that, without site survey, the possibility in obtaining the correct AP sequence is lower if it involves more APs. Experimental results show that, the proposed system achieves localization accuracy < 5m with an accumulative density function (CDF) of 50% to 60% depending on the density of APs. Furthermore, we observe that, using all APs for localization might not achieve the best localization accuracy, e.g. in our case, 4 APs out of total 7 APs achieves the best performance. In practice, the number of APs used to perform localization should be a design parameter based on the placement of APs.

To understand the factors that encourage the deployment of a new networking technology, we must be able to model how such technology gets deployed. We investigate how network structure influences deployment with a simple deployment model and differen t network models through computer simulations. The results indicate that a realistic model of networking technology deployment should take network structure into account.
