Mg2GeO4 is an analogue for the ultra-high pressure behavior of Mg2SiO4, so we have investigated magnesium germanate to 275 GPa and over 2000 K using a laser-heated diamond anvil cell combined with in situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction and density functional theory (DFT) computations. The experimental results are consistent with a novel phase with disordered Mg and Ge, in which germanium adopts eight-fold coordination with oxygen: the cubic Th3P4- type structure. Simulations using the special quasirandom structure (SQS) method suggest partial order in the tetragonal I-42d structure, indistinguishable from I-43d Th3P4 in our experiments. These structures have not been reported before in any oxide. If applicable to silicates, the formation of this highly coordinated and intrinsically disordered phase would have important implications for the interior mineralogy of large, rocky extrasolar planets.

We report pressure-dependent reflection and transmission measurements on ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$, HgCr$_2$S$_4$, and CdCr$_2$O$_4$ single crystals at room temperature over a broad spectral range 200-24000 cm$^{-1}$. The pressure dependence of the phonon modes and the high-frequency electronic excitations indicates that all three compounds undergo a pressure-induced structural phase transition with the critical pressure 15 GPa, 12 GPa, and 10 GPa for CdCr$_2$O$_4$, HgCr$_2$S$_4$, and ZnCr$_2$Se$_4$, respectively. The eigenfrequencies of the electronic transitions are very close to the expected values for chromium crystal-field transitions. In the case of the chalcogenides pressure induces a red shift of the electronic excitation which indicates a strong hybridization of the Cr d-bands with the chalcogenide bands.
Despite its interest for CMOS applications, Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) of GeO$_{2}$ thin films, by itself or in combination with SiO$_{2}$, has not been widely investigated yet. Here we report the ALD growth of SiO$_{2}$/GeO$_{2}$ multilayers on S ilicon substrates using a so far unreported Ge precursor. The characterization of multilayers with various periodicities reveals successful layer-by-layer growth with electron density contrast and absence of chemical intermixing, down to a periodicity of 2 atomic layers.
A new layered perovskite-type oxide Ba$_2$RhO$_4$ was synthesized by a high-pressure technique with the support of convex-hull calculations. The crystal and electronic structure were studied by both experimental and computational tools. Structural re finements for powder x-ray diffraction data showed that Ba$_2$RhO$_4$ crystallizes in a K$_2$NiF$_4$-type structure, isostructural to Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and Ba$_2$IrO$_4$. Magnetic, resistivity, and specific heat measurements for polycrystalline samples of Ba$_2$RhO$_4$ indicate that the system can be characterized as a correlated metal. Despite the close similarity to its Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ counterpart in the electronic specific heat coefficient and the Wilson ratio, Ba$_2$RhO$_4$ shows no signature of superconductivity down to 0.16 K. Whereas the Fermi surface topology has reminiscent pieces of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, an electron-like e$_g$-($d_{x^2-y^2}$) band descends below the Fermi level, making of this compound unique also as a metallic counterpart of the spin-orbit-coupled Mott insulator Ba$_2$IrO$_4$.

We study the effect of Zn alloying on the hydrogen desorption properties of Mg(BH$_4$)$_2$ using $it{ab initio}$ simulations. In particular, we investigate formation/reaction enthalpies/entropies for a number of compounds and reactions at a wide rang e of temperatures and Zn concentrations in Mg$_{1-x}$Zn$_x$(BH$_4$)$_2$. Our results show that the thermodynamic stability of the resulting material can be significantly lowered through Zn alloying. We find that e.g. the solid solution Mg$_{2/3}$Zn$_{1/3}$(BH$_4$)$_2$ has a reaction enthalpy for the complete hydrogen desorption of only 25.3 kJ/mol H$_2$$-$a lowering of 15 kJ/mol H$_2$ compared to the pure phase and a corresponding lowering in critical temperature of 123 K. In addition, we find that the enthalpy of mixing is rather small and show that the decrease in reaction enthalpy with Zn concentration is approximately linear.
Studies of the behaviour of solids at ultra-high pressures, those beyond 200 GPa, contribute to our fundamental understanding of materials properties and allow an insight into the processes happening at such extreme conditions relevant for terrestria l and extra-terrestrial bodies. The behaviour of magnesium oxide, MgO, is of a particular importance, as it is believed to be a major phase in the Earth lower mantle and the interior of super-Earth planets. Here we report the results of studies of MgO at ultra-high static pressures up to ca. 660 GPa using the double-stage diamond anvil cell technique with synchrotron X-ray diffraction. We observed the B1-B2 phase transition in the pressure interval from 429(10) GPa to 562(10) GPa setting an unambiguous reference mark for the B1-B2 transition in MgO at room temperature. Our observations allow constraining theoretical predictions and results of available so far dynamic compression experiments.
