A new layered perovskite-type oxide Ba$_2$RhO$_4$ was synthesized by a high-pressure technique with the support of convex-hull calculations. The crystal and electronic structure were studied by both experimental and computational tools. Structural refinements for powder x-ray diffraction data showed that Ba$_2$RhO$_4$ crystallizes in a K$_2$NiF$_4$-type structure, isostructural to Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and Ba$_2$IrO$_4$. Magnetic, resistivity, and specific heat measurements for polycrystalline samples of Ba$_2$RhO$_4$ indicate that the system can be characterized as a correlated metal. Despite the close similarity to its Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ counterpart in the electronic specific heat coefficient and the Wilson ratio, Ba$_2$RhO$_4$ shows no signature of superconductivity down to 0.16 K. Whereas the Fermi surface topology has reminiscent pieces of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, an electron-like e$_g$-($d_{x^2-y^2}$) band descends below the Fermi level, making of this compound unique also as a metallic counterpart of the spin-orbit-coupled Mott insulator Ba$_2$IrO$_4$.

We report the existence of Griffiths phase (GP) and its influence on critical phenomena in layered Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ ferromagnet (T$_C$ = 221.5 K). The power law behavior of inverse magentic susceptibility, 1/$chi$(T) with exponent $lambda = 0.18(2)$ con firm the GP in the regime T$_C$ $<$ T $leq$ T$_G$ = 279.0(5) K. Moreover, the detailed critical analysis via modified Arrott plot method exhibits unrealistic critical exponents $beta$ = 0.77(1), $gamma$ = 1.59(2) and $delta = 3.06(4)$, in corroboration with magneto-caloric study. The abnormal exponent values have been viewed in context of ferromagnetic-Griffiths phase transition. The GP has been further analyzed using Bray model, which yields a reliable value of $beta$ = 0.19(2), belonging to the two-dimensional (2D) XYh$_4$ universality class with strong anisotropy present in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. The present study proposes Bray model as a possible tool to investigate the critical behavior for Griffiths ferromagnets in place of conventional Arrott plot analysis. The possible origins of GP and its correlation with insulating nature of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ have been discussed.
We investigate the high-energy magnetic excitation spectrum of the high-$T_c$ cuprate superconductor Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+delta}$ (Bi-2212) using Cu $L_3$ edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). Broad, dispersive magnetic excitations ar e observed, with a zone boundary energy of $sim$300 meV and a weak dependence on doping. These excitations are strikingly similar to the bosons proposed to explain the high-energy `kink observed in photoemission. A calculation of the spin-response based on the ARPES-derived electronic structure and YRZ-quasi-particles reproduces the key features of the observed magnetic dispersions with no adjustable parameters. These results show that it is possible to reconcile the magnetic and electronic properties of the cuprates within a unified framework.

Measuring how the magnetic correlations throughout the Brillouin zone evolve in a Mott insulator as charges are introduced dramatically improved our understanding of the pseudogap, non-Fermi liquids and high $T_C$ superconductivity. Recently, photoex citation has been used to induce similarly exotic states transiently. However, understanding how these states emerge has been limited because of a lack of available probes of magnetic correlations in the time domain, which hinders further investigation of how light can be used to control the properties of solids. Here we implement magnetic resonant inelastic X-ray scattering at a free electron laser, and directly determine the magnetization dynamics after photo-doping the Mott insulator Sr$_2$IrO$_4$. We find that the non-equilibrium state 2~ps after the excitation has strongly suppressed long-range magnetic order, but hosts photo-carriers that induce strong, non-thermal magnetic correlations. The magnetism recovers its two-dimensional (2D) in-plane Neel correlations on a timescale of a few ps, while the three-dimensional (3D) long-range magnetic order restores over a far longer, fluence-dependent timescale of a few hundred ps. The dramatic difference in these two timescales, implies that characterizing the dimensionality of magnetic correlations will be vital in our efforts to understand ultrafast magnetic dynamics.
We studied the physical properties of two Kondo-lattice compounds, CeRu$_2$As$_2$ and CeIr$_2$As$_2$, by a combination of electric transport, magnetic and thermodynamic measurements. They are of ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type and CaBe$_2$Ge$_2$-type crystalline structures, respectively. CeRu$_2$As$_2$ shows localized long-range antiferromagnetic ordering below $T_N$=4.3 K, with a moderate electronic Sommerfeld coefficient $gamma_0$=35 mJ/mol$cdot$K$^2$. A field-induced metamagnetic transition is observed near 2 T below $T_N$. Magnetic susceptibility measurements on aligned CeRu$_2$As$_2$ powders suggest that it has an easy axis and that the cerium moments align uniaxially along $mathbf{c}$ axis. In contrast, CeIr$_2$As$_2$ is a magnetically nonordered heavy-fermion metal with enhanced $gamma_0$$>$300 mJ/mol$cdot$K$^2$. The initial onset Kondo temperatures of the two compounds are respectively 6 K and 30 K. We discuss the role of the crystal structure to the strength of Kondo coupling. This work provides two new dense Kondo-lattice materials for further investigations on electronic correlation, quantum criticality and heavy-electron effects.
Using $textit{ab-initio}$ crystal structure prediction we study the high-pressure phase diagram of $textit{A}BiO_3$ bismuthates ($A$=Ba, Sr, Ca) in a pressure range up to 100$~$GPa. All compounds show a transition from the low-pressure perovskite str ucture to highly distorted, low-symmetry phases at high pressures (PD transition), and remain charge disproportionated and insulating up to the highest pressure studied. The PD transition at high pressures in bismuthates can be understood as a combined effect of steric arguments and of the strong tendency of bismuth to charge-disproportionation. In fact, distorted structures permit to achieve a very efficient atomic packing, and at the same time, to have Bi-O bonds of different lengths. The shift of the PD transition to higher pressures with increasing cation size within the $textit{A}BiO_3$ series can be explained in terms of chemical pressure.
