Here by combining a symmetry-based analysis with numerical computations we predict a new kind of magnetic ordering - antichiral ferromagnetism. The relationship between chiral and antichiral magnetic order is conceptually similar to the relationship between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic order. Without loss of generality, we focus our investigation on crystals with full tetrahedral symmetry where chiral interaction terms - Lifshitz invariants - are forbidden by symmetry. However, we demonstrate that leading chirality-related term leads to nontrivial smooth magnetic textures in the form of helix-like segments of alternating opposite chiralities. The unconventional order manifests itself beyond the ground state by stabilizing excitations such as domains and skyrmions in an antichiral form.

The noninteracting electronic structures of tight binding models on bipartite lattices with unequal numbers of sites in the two sublattices have a number of unique features, including the presence of spatially localized eigenstates and flat bands. Wh en a emph{uniform} on-site Hubbard interaction $U$ is turned on, Lieb proved rigorously that at half filling ($rho=1$) the ground state has a non-zero spin. In this paper we consider a `CuO$_2$ lattice (also known as `Lieb lattice, or as a decorated square lattice), in which `$d$-orbitals occupy the vertices of the squares, while `$p$-orbitals lie halfway between two $d$-orbitals. We use exact Determinant Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) simulations to quantify the nature of magnetic order through the behavior of correlation functions and sublattice magnetizations in the different orbitals as a function of $U$ and temperature. We study both the homogeneous (H) case, $U_d= U_p$, originally considered by Lieb, and the inhomogeneous (IH) case, $U_d eq U_p$. For the H case at half filling, we found that the global magnetization rises sharply at weak coupling, and then stabilizes towards the strong-coupling (Heisenberg) value, as a result of the interplay between the ferromagnetism of like sites and the antiferromagnetism between unlike sites; we verified that the system is an insulator for all $U$. For the IH system at half filling, we argue that the case $U_p eq U_d$ falls under Liebs theorem, provided they are positive definite, so we used DQMC to probe the cases $U_p=0,U_d=U$ and $U_p=U, U_d=0$. We found that the different environments of $d$ and $p$ sites lead to a ferromagnetic insulator when $U_d=0$; by contrast, $U_p=0$ leads to to a metal without any magnetic ordering. In addition, we have also established that at density $rho=1/3$, strong antiferromagnetic correlations set in, caused by the presence of one fermion on each $d$ site.

Quantum materials with strong transport responses to disparate physical quantities are of great fundamental significance and may hold technological potentials. The interplay between interactions and topology drive such responses through the effects o f spontaneous symmetry breaking and the associated domain configurations on quantum transport. Here we provide a comprehensive description of the magnetism of Mn3Ge, an antiferromagnetic kagomebased semimetal with room temperature transport anomalies associated with topologically protected Weyl nodes. Using polarized neutron diffraction, we show the all-important magnetic structure is anti-chiral and coplanar carrying the symmetry of a ferromagnet without appreciable magnetization. We probe and classify the long wavelength excitations that determine its macroscopic responses including a set of collective magneto-elastic modes. We develop a phenomenological spin Hamiltonian with exchange, Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya, and crystal field interactions to describe its collective magnetism. The itinerant character of the magnetism that drives quantum transport is apparent in spin wave damping and extended magnetic interactions. Our work provides the scientific basis for manipulation of the chiral antiferromagnetic texture of Mn3Ge to control its topological quantum transport.
We study ferromagnetic ordering and microscopic inhomogeneity in tensile strained LaCoO$_3$ using numerical simulations. We argue that both phenomena originate from effective superexchange interactions between atoms in the high-spin (HS) state mediat ed by the intermediate-spin excitations. We derive a model of the HS excitation as a bare atomic state dressed by electron and electron-hole fluctuations on the neighbor atoms. We construct a series of approximations to account for electron correlation effects responsible for HS fluctuations and magnetic exchange. The obtained amplitudes and directional dependence of magnetic couplings between the dressed HS states show a qualitative agreement with experimental observations and provide a new physical picture of LaCoO$_3$ films.
Magnetotransport and superconducting properties are investigated for uniformly La-doped SrTiO3 films and GdTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures, respectively. GdTiO3/SrTiO3 interfaces exhibit a high-density two-dimensional electron gas on the SrTiO3-side of the interface, while for the SrTiO3 films carriers are provided by the dopant atoms. Both types of samples exhibit ferromagnetism at low temperatures, as evidenced by a hysteresis in the magnetoresistance. For the uniformly doped SrTiO3 films, the Curie temperature is found to increase with doping and to coexist with superconductivity for carrier concentrations on the high-density side of the superconducting dome. The Curie temperature of the GdTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures scales with the thickness of the SrTiO3 quantum well. The results are used to construct a stability diagram for the ferromagnetic and superconducting phases of SrTiO3.
In 1929 Felix Bloch suggested that the paramagnetic Fermi sea of electrons should make a spontaneous transition to a fully-magnetized state at very low densities, because the exchange energy gained by aligning the spins exceeds the enhancement in the kinetic energy. We report here the observation of an abrupt, interaction-driven transition to full magnetization, highly reminiscent of Bloch ferromagnetism that has eluded experiments for the last ninety years. Our platform is the exotic two-dimensional Fermi sea of composite fermions at half-filling of the lowest Landau level. Via quantitative measurements of the Fermi wavevector, which provides a direct measure of the spin polarization, we observe a sudden transition from a partially-spin-polarized to a fully-spin-polarized ground state as we lower the composite fermions density. Our detailed theoretical calculations provide a semi-quantitative account of this phenomenon.
