We analyze relative abundances and ionization conditions in a strong absorption system at z=6.84, seen in the spectrum of the z=7.54 background quasar ULAS J134208.10+092838.61. Singly ionized C, Si, Fe, Mg, and Al measurements are consistent with a warm neutral medium that is metal-poor but not chemically pristine. Firm non-detections of C IV and Si IV imply that any warm ionized phase of the IGM or CGM has not yet been enriched past the ultra-metal-poor regime (<0.001Z_{solar}), unlike lower redshift DLAs where these lines are nearly ubiquitous. Relative abundances of the heavy elements 794 Myr after the Big Bang resemble those of metal-poor damped Lyman Alpha systems at intermediate redshift and Milky Way halo stars, and show no evidence of enhanced [alpha/Fe], [C/Fe] or other signatures of yields dominated by massive stars. A detection of the CII* fine structure line reveals local sources of excitation from heating, beyond the level of photo-excitation supplied by the CMB. We estimate the total and [CII] cooling rates, balancing against ISM heating sources to develop an heuristic two-phase model of the neutral medium. The implied heating requires a surface density of star formation slightly exceeding that of the Milky Way but not at the level of a strong starburst. For a typical (assumed) NHI=10^{20.6}, an abundance of [Fe/H]=-2.2 matches the columns of species in the neutral phase. To remain undetected in C IV, a warm ionized phase would either need much lower [C/H]<-4.2 over an absorption path of 1 kpc, or else a very small absorption path (a few pc). While still speculative, these results suggest a significant reduction in heavy element enrichment outside of neutral star forming regions of the ISM, as would be expected in early stages of galactic chemical evolution.

We report the detection of interstellar silicate dust in the z_abs=0.685 absorber along the sightline toward the gravitationally lensed blazar TXS 0218+357. Using Spitzer Space Telescope Infrared Spectrograph data we detect the 10 micron silicate abs orption feature with a detection significance of 10.7-sigma. We fit laboratory-derived silicate dust profile templates obtained from literature to the observed 10 micron absorption feature, and find that the best single-mineral fit is obtained using an amorphous olivine template with a measured peak optical depth of tau_10=0.49+/-0.02, which rises to tau_10~0.67+/-0.04 if the covering factor is taken into account. We also detected the 18 micron silicate absorption feature in our data with a >3-sigma significance. Due to the proximity of the 18 micron absorption feature to the edge of our covered spectral range, and associated uncertainty about the shape of the quasar continuum normalization near 18 micron, we do not independently fit this feature. We find, however, that the shape and depth of the 18 micron silicate absorption are well-matched to the amorphous olivine template prediction, given the optical depth inferred for the 10 micron feature. The measured 10 micron peak optical depth in this absorber is significantly higher than those found in previously studied quasar absorption systems. The reddening, 21-cm absorption, and velocity spread of Mg II are not outliers relative to other studied absorption systems, however. This high optical depth may be evidence for variations in dust grain properties in the ISM between this and the previously studied high redshift galaxies.
We investigate the impact of cosmic rays (CRs) on the circumgalactic medium (CGM) in FIRE-2 simulations, for ultra-faint dwarf through Milky Way (MW)-mass halos hosting star-forming (SF) galaxies. Our CR treatment includes injection by supernovae, an isotropic streaming and diffusion along magnetic field lines, collisional and streaming losses, with constant parallel diffusivity $kappasim3times10^{29},mathrm{cm^2 s^{-1}}$ chosen to match $gamma$-ray observations. With this, CRs become more important at larger halo masses and lower redshifts, and dominate the pressure in the CGM in MW-mass halos at $zlesssim 1-2$. The gas in these CR-dominated halos differs significantly from runs without CRs: the gas is primarily cool (a few $sim10^{4},$K), and the cool phase is volume-filling and has a thermal pressure below that needed for virial or local thermal pressure balance. Ionization of the low and mid ions in this diffuse cool gas is dominated by photo-ionization, with O VI columns $gtrsim 10^{14.5},mathrm{cm^{-2}}$ at distances $gtrsim 150,mathrm{kpc}$. CR and thermal gas pressure are locally anti-correlated, maintaining total pressure balance, and the CGM gas density profile is determined by the balance of CR pressure gradients and gravity. Neglecting CRs, the same halos are primarily warm/hot ($Tgtrsim 10^{5},$K) with thermal pressure balancing gravity, collisional ionization dominates, O VI columns are lower and Ne VIII higher, and the cool phase is confined to dense filaments in local thermal pressure equilibrium with the hot phase.

Studying the stellar mass, age, luminosity, star-formation rate, and impact parameter of quasar absorber host galaxies can aid in the understanding of galaxy formation and evolution as well as in testing their models. We derive the Spectral Energy Di stribution (SED) and impact parameter limits of low redshift ($z_{abs} = 0.37 - 0.55$) Mg II absorbers and of higher redshift ($z_{abs} = 1.0 - 2.5$) 2175 AA dust absorbers (2DAs). We use an imaging stacking technique to statistically boost the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) to increase detection of the absorber host galaxies. The point spread function of the background quasar is modeled with Principal Component Analysis (PCA). This method efficiently reduces the uncertainty of traditional PSF modeling. Our SED for Mg II absorbers indicates that low redshift Mg II absorber host galaxies are likely star-forming galaxies transitioning into red quiescent galaxies, with a low star formation rate of 2.2 $M_odot$ $yr^{-1}$. From the stacked images and simulations, we show that the average impact parameter of 2DAs is > 5 times smaller than that of Mg II absorbers, at < 7 kpc instead of Mg II absorbers 48 kpc, indicating that 2DAs are likely associated with disk components of high redshift galaxies. This means that 2DAs are likely good probes to study precursors to the Milky Way.
We present a systematic investigation of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) within projected distances d<160 kpc of luminous red galaxies (LRGs). The sample comprises 16 intermediate-redshift (z=0.21-0.55) LRGs of stellar mass M_star>1e11 M_sun. Combini ng far-ultraviolet Cosmic Origin Spectrograph spectra from the Hubble Space Telescope and optical echelle spectra from the ground enables a detailed ionization analysis based on resolved component structures of a suite of absorption transitions, including the full HI Lyman series and various ionic metal transitions. By comparing the relative abundances of different ions in individually-matched components, we show that cool gas (T~1e4 K) density and metallicity can vary by more than a factor of ten in in an LRG halo. Specifically, metal-poor absorbing components with <1/10 solar metallicity are seen in 50% of the LRG halos, while gas with solar and super-solar metallicity is also common. These results indicate a complex multiphase structure and poor chemical mixing in these quiescent halos. We calculate the total surface mass density of cool gas, Sigma_cool, by applying the estimated ionization fraction corrections to the observed HI column densities. The radial profile of Sigma_cool is best-described by a projected Einasto profile of slope alpha=1 and scale radius r_s=48 kpc. We find that typical LRGs at z~0.4 contain cool gas mass of M_cool= (1-2) x1e10 M_sun at d<160 kpc (or as much as 4x1e10 M_sun at d<500 kpc), comparable to the cool CGM mass of star-forming galaxies. Furthermore, we show that high-ionization OVI and low-ionization absorption species exhibit distinct velocity profiles, highlighting their different physical origins. We discuss the implications of our findings for the origin and fate of cool gas in LRG halos.

Quasar feedback in the form of powerful outflows is invoked as a key mechanism to quench star formation in galaxies, preventing massive galaxies to over-grow and producing the red colors of ellipticals. On the other hand, some models are also requiri ng `positive AGN feedback, inducing star formation in the host galaxy through enhanced gas pressure in the interstellar medium. However, finding observational evidence of the effects of both types of feedback is still one of the main challenges of extragalactic astronomy, as few observations of energetic and extended radiatively-driven winds are available. Here we present SINFONI near infrared integral field spectroscopy of XID2028, an obscured, radio-quiet z=1.59 QSO detected in the XMM-COSMOS survey, in which we clearly resolve a fast (1500 km/s) and extended (up to 13 kpc from the black hole) outflow in the [OIII] lines emitting gas, whose large velocity and outflow rate are not sustainable by star formation only. The narrow component of Ha emission and the rest frame U band flux from HST-ACS imaging enable to map the current star formation in the host galaxy: both tracers independently show that the outflow position lies in the center of an empty cavity surrounded by star forming regions on its edge. The outflow is therefore removing the gas from the host galaxy (`negative feedback), but also triggering star formation by outflow induced pressure at the edges (`positive feedback). XID2028 represents the first example of a host galaxy showing both types of feedback simultaneously at work.
