As a crucial role in cross-language information retrieval (CLIR), query translation has three main challenges: 1) the adequacy of translation; 2) the lack of in-domain parallel training data; and 3) the requisite of low latency. To this end, existing CLIR systems mainly exploit statistical-based machine translation (SMT) rather than the advanced neural machine translation (NMT), limiting the further improvements on both translation and retrieval quality. In this paper, we investigate how to exploit neural query translation model into CLIR system. Specifically, we propose a novel data augmentation method that extracts query translation pairs according to user clickthrough data, thus to alleviate the problem of domain-adaptation in NMT. Then, we introduce an asynchronous strategy which is able to leverage the advantages of the real-time in SMT and the veracity in NMT. Experimental results reveal that the proposed approach yields better retrieval quality than strong baselines and can be well applied into a real-world CLIR system, i.e. Aliexpress e-Commerce search engine. Query translation (QT) is a key component in cross-lingual information retrieval system (CLIR). With the help of deep learning, neural machine translation (NMT) has shown promising results on various tasks. However, NMT is generally trained with larg e-scale out-of-domain data rather than in-domain query translation pairs. Besides, the translation model lacks a mechanism at the inference time to guarantee the generated words to match the search index. The two shortages of QT result in readable texts for human but inadequate candidates for the downstream retrieval task. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to alleviate these problems by limiting the open target vocabulary search space of QT to a set of important words mined from search index database. The constraint translation candidates are employed at both of training and inference time, thus guiding the translation model to learn and generate well performing target queries. The proposed methods are exploited and examined in a real-word CLIR system--Aliexpress e-Commerce search engine. Experimental results demonstrate that our approach yields better performance on both translation quality and retrieval accuracy than the strong NMT baseline.

Dense retrieval has shown great success in passage ranking in English. However, its effectiveness in document retrieval for non-English languages remains unexplored due to the limitation in training resources. In this work, we explore different trans fer techniques for document ranking from English annotations to multiple non-English languages. Our experiments on the test collections in six languages (Chinese, Arabic, French, Hindi, Bengali, Spanish) from diverse language families reveal that zero-shot model-based transfer using mBERT improves the search quality in non-English mono-lingual retrieval. Also, we find that weakly-supervised target language transfer yields competitive performances against the generation-based target language transfer that requires external translators and query generators.
We present a simple but effective approach for leveraging Wikipedia for neural machine translation as well as cross-lingual tasks of image captioning and dependency parsing without using any direct supervision from external parallel data or supervise d models in the target language. We show that first sentences and titles of linked Wikipedia pages, as well as cross-lingual image captions, are strong signals for a seed parallel data to extract bilingual dictionaries and cross-lingual word embeddings for mining parallel text from Wikipedia. Our final model achieves high BLEU scores that are close to or sometimes higher than strong supervised baselines in low-resource languages; e.g. supervised BLEU of 4.0 versus 12.1 from our model in English-to-Kazakh. Moreover, we tailor our wikily supervised translation models to unsupervised image captioning, and cross-lingual dependency parser transfer. In image captioning, we train a multi-tasking machine translation and image captioning pipeline for Arabic and English from which the Arabic training data is a translated version of the English captioning data, using our wikily-supervised translation models. Our captioning results on Arabic are slightly better than that of its supervised model. In dependency parsing, we translate a large amount of monolingual text, and use it as artificial training data in an annotation projection framework. We show that our model outperforms recent work on cross-lingual transfer of dependency parsers.
Multiple neural language models have been developed recently, e.g., BERT and XLNet, and achieved impressive results in various NLP tasks including sentence classification, question answering and document ranking. In this paper, we explore the use of the popular bidirectional language model, BERT, to model and learn the relevance between English queries and foreign-language documents in the task of cross-lingual information retrieval. A deep relevance matching model based on BERT is introduced and trained by finetuning a pretrained multilingual BERT model with weak supervision, using home-made CLIR training data derived from parallel corpora. Experimental results of the retrieval of Lithuanian documents against short English queries show that our model is effective and outperforms the competitive baseline approaches.
Transferring representations from large supervised tasks to downstream tasks has shown promising results in AI fields such as Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing (NLP). In parallel, the recent progress in Machine Translation (MT) has enab led one to train multilingual Neural MT (NMT) systems that can translate between multiple languages and are also capable of performing zero-shot translation. However, little attention has been paid to leveraging representations learned by a multilingual NMT system to enable zero-shot multilinguality in other NLP tasks. In this paper, we demonstrate a simple framework, a multilingual Encoder-Classifier, for cross-lingual transfer learning by reusing the encoder from a multilingual NMT system and stitching it with a task-specific classifier component. Our proposed model achieves significant improvements in the English setup on three benchmark tasks - Amazon Reviews, SST and SNLI. Further, our system can perform classification in a new language for which no classification data was seen during training, showing that zero-shot classification is possible and remarkably competitive. In order to understand the underlying factors contributing to this finding, we conducted a series of analyses on the effect of the shared vocabulary, the training data type for NMT, classifier complexity, encoder representation power, and model generalization on zero-shot performance. Our results provide strong evidence that the representations learned from multilingual NMT systems are widely applicable across languages and tasks.
