Gradient metasurfaces have been extensively applied in recent years for enabling an unprecedented control of light beam over thin optical components. However, these metasurfaces suffer from low efficiency when it comes to bending light with large angle and high fabrication demand when it requires fine discretion. In this work, we investigate the all-dielectric metagrating based on mie-type resonances interference, allowing extraordinary optical diffraction for beam steering with ultralarge angle. It is found that the coupling inside and among lattice of metagrating can tune the exciting state of electric and magnetic resonances including both fundamental dipoles and high-order multipoles, leading to ideal asymmetrical scattering pattern for redistributing the energy between the diffraction channels at will. The participation of quadrupole and hexapole not only significantly enhance the working efficiency, but also bring distinctive possibilities for wave manipulation which cannot be reached by dipoles. Utilizing a thin array of silicon rods, large-angle negative refraction and reflection are demonstrated with almost unity efficiency under both polarizations. Compared with conventional metasurfaces, such an all-dielectric mategrating has the merits of high flexibility, high efficiency and low fabrication demand. The strong coupling and prosperous interactions among multipoles may behave as a cornerstone for broad range of wavefront control and offer an effective solution for various on-chip optical wave control such as bending, focusing, filtering and sensing.

Recently, an achromatic metasurface was successfully demonstrated to deflect light of multiple wavelengths in the same direction and it was further applied to the design of planar lenses without chromatic aberrations [Science, 347, 1342(2015)]. Howev er, such metasurface can only work for normal incidence and exhibit low conversion efficiency. Here, we present an ultrawide-angle and high-efficiency metasurface without chromatic aberration for wavefront shaping in visible range. The metasurface is constructed by multiple metallic nano-groove gratings, which support enhanced diffractions for an ultrawide incident angle range from 10o to 80o due to the excitations of localized gap plasmon modes at different resonance wavelengths. Incident light at these resonance wavelengths can be efficiently diffracted into the same direction with complete suppression of the specular reflection. This approach is applied to the design of an achromatic flat lens for focusing light of different wavelengths into the same position. Our findings provide a facile way to design various achromatic flat optical elements for imaging and display applications.

Photonic crystals have been demonstrated as a versatile platform for the study of topological phenomena. The recent discovery of higher order topological insulators introduces new aspects of topological photonic crystals which are yet to be explored. Here, we propose a dielectric photonic crystal with unconventional higher order band topology. Besides the conventional spectral features of gapped edge states and in gap corner states, topological band theory predicts that the corner boundary of the higher-order topological insulator hosts a 2/3 fractional charge. We demonstrate that in the photonic crystal such a fractional charge can be verified from the local density of states of photons, through the concept of local spectral charge as an analog of the local electric charge due to band filling anomaly in electronic systems. Furthermore, we show that by introducing a disclination in the proposed photonic crystal, localized states and a 2/3 fractional spectral charge emerge around the disclination core, as the manifestation of the bulk disclination correspondence. The predicted effects can be readily observed in the state-of-the-art experiments and may lead to potential applications in integrated and quantum photonics.
In this article, it has been theoretically shown that broad angle negative refraction is possible with asymmetric anisotropic metamaterials constructed by only dielectrics or loss less semiconductors at the telecommunication and relative wavelength r ange. Though natural uniaxial materials can exhibit negative refraction, the maximum angle of negative refraction and critical incident angle lie in a very narrow range. This notable problem can be overcome by our proposed structure. In our structures, negative refraction originates from the highly asymmetric elliptical iso-frequency.This is artificially created by the rotated multilayer sub-wavelength dielectric/semiconductor stack, which act as an effective asymmetric anisotropic metamaterial. This negative refraction is achieved without using any negative permittivity materials such as metals. As we are using simple dielectrics, fabrication of such structures would be less complex than that of the metal based metamaterials. Our proposed ideas have been validated numerically and also by the full wave simulations considering both the effective medium approach and realistic structure model. This device might find some important applications in photonics and optoelectronics.
The higher order multipoles above the electric quadrupole are commonly neglected in metamaterial homogenization. We show that they nevertheless can be significant when second order spatial dispersive effects, such as the magnetic response, are consid ered. In this respect, they can be equally important as the magnetization and quadrupole terms, and should not automatically be neglected.
Nanophotonics is an important branch of modern optics dealing with light-matter interaction at the nanoscale. Nanoparticles can exhibit enhanced light absorption under illumination by light, and they become nanoscale sources of heat that can be preci sely controlled and manipulated. For metal nanoparticles, such effects have been studied in the framework of $textit{thermoplasmonics}$ which, similar to plasmonics itself, has a number of limitations. Recently emerged $textit{all-dielectric resonant nanophotonics}$ is associated with optically-induced electric and magnetic Mie resonances, and this field is developing very rapidly in the last decade. As a result, thermoplasmonics is being replaced by $textit{all-dielectric thermonanophotonics}$ with many important applications such as photothermal cancer therapy, drug and gene delivery, nanochemistry, and photothermal imaging. This review paper aims to introduce this new field of non-plasmonic nanophotonics and discuss associated thermally-induced processes at the nanoscale.
