We investigate the large time behavior of multi-dimensional aggregation equations driven by Newtonian repulsion, and balanced by radial attraction and confinement. In case of Newton repulsion with radial confinement we quantify the algebraic convergence decay rate towards the unique steady state. To this end, we identify a one-parameter family of radial steady states, and prove dimension-dependent decay rate in energy and 2-Wassertein distance, using a comparison with properly selected radial steady states. We also study Newtonian repulsion and radial attraction. When the attraction potential is quadratic it is known to coincide with quadratic confinement. Here we study the case of perturbed radial quadratic attraction, proving that it still leads to one-parameter family of unique steady states. It is expected that this family to serve for a corresponding comparison argument which yields algebraic convergence towards steady repulsive-attractive solutions.

We consider density solutions for gradient flow equations of the form $u_t = abla cdot ( gamma(u) abla mathrm N(u))$, where $mathrm N$ is the Newtonian repulsive potential in the whole space $mathbb R^d$ with the nonlinear convex mobility $gamma(u) =u^alpha$, and $alpha>1$. We show that solutions corresponding to compactly supported initial data remain compactly supported for all times leading to moving free boundaries as in the linear mobility case $gamma(u)=u$. For linear mobility it was shown that there is a special solution in the form of a disk vortex of constant intensity in space $u=c_1t^{-1}$ supported in a ball that spreads in time like $c_2t^{1/d}$, thus showing a discontinuous leading front or shock. Our present results are in sharp contrast with the case of concave mobilities of the form $gamma(u)=u^alpha$, with $0<alpha<1$ studied in [9]. There, we developed a well-posedness theory of viscosity solutions that are positive everywhere and moreover display a fat tail at infinity. Here, we also develop a well-posedness theory of viscosity solutions that in the radial case leads to a very detail analysis allowing us to show a waiting time phenomena. This is a typical behavior for nonlinear degenerate diffusion equations such as the porous medium equation. We will also construct explicit self-similar solutions exhibiting similar vortex-like behaviour characterizing the long time asymptotics of general radial solutions under certain assumptions. Convergent numerical schemes based on the viscosity solution theory are proposed analysing their rate of convergence. We complement our analytical results with numerical simulations ilustrating the proven results and showcasing some open problems.

We consider a space-homogeneous gas of {it inelastic hard spheres}, with a {it diffusive term} representing a random background forcing (in the framework of so-called {em constant normal restitution coefficients} $alpha in [0,1]$ for the inelasticity ). In the physical regime of a small inelasticity (that is $alpha in [alpha_*,1)$ for some constructive $alpha_* in [0,1)$) we prove uniqueness of the stationary solution for given values of the restitution coefficient $alpha in [alpha_*,1)$, the mass and the momentum, and we give various results on the linear stability and nonlinear stability of this stationary solution.
Magnetorotational turbulence provides a viable mechanism for angular momentum transport in accretion disks. We present global, three dimensional (3D), MHD accretion disk simulations that investigate the dependence of the turbulent stresses on resolut ion. Convergence in the time-and-volume-averaged stress-to-gas-pressure ratio, at a value of $sim0.04$, is found for a model with radial, vertical, and azimuthal resolution of 12-51, 27, and 12.5 cells per scale-height (the simulation mesh is such that cells per scale-height varies in the radial direction). A control volume analysis is performed on the main body of the disk (|z|<2H) to examine the production and removal of magnetic energy. Maxwell stresses in combination with the mean disk rotation are mainly responsible for magnetic energy production, whereas turbulent dissipation (facilitated by numerical resistivity) predominantly removes magnetic energy from the disk. Re-casting the magnetic energy equation in terms of the power injected by Maxwell stresses on the boundaries of, and by Lorentz forces within, the control volume highlights the importance of the boundary conditions (of the control volume). The different convergence properties of shearing-box and global accretion disk simulations can be readily understood on the basis of choice of boundary conditions and the magnetic field configuration. Periodic boundary conditions restrict the establishment of large-scale gradients in the magnetic field, limiting the power that can be delivered to the disk by Lorentz forces and by stresses at the surfaces. The factor of three lower resolution required for convergence in turbulent stresses for our global disk models compared to stratified shearing-boxes is explained by this finding. (Abridged)
We prove the propagation of regularity, uniformly in time, for the scaled solutions of one-dimensional dissipative Maxwell models. This result together with the weak convergence towards the stationary state proven by Pareschi and Toscani in 2006 impl ies the strong convergence in Sobolev norms and in the L^1 norm towards it depending on the regularity of the initial data. In the case of the one-dimensional inelastic Boltzmann equation, the result does not depend of the degree of inelasticity. This generalizes a recent result of Carlen, Carrillo and Carvalho (arXiv:0805.1051v1), in which, for weak inelasticity, propagation of regularity for the scaled inelastic Boltzmann equation was found by means of a precise control of the growth of the Fisher information.

The paper is concerned with the steady-state Burgers equation of fractional dissipation on the real line. We first prove the global existence of viscosity weak solutions to the fractal Burgers equation driven by the external force. Then the existence and uniqueness of solution with finite $H^{frac{alpha}{2}}$ energy to the steady-state equation are established by estimating the decay of fractal Burgers solutions. Furthermore, we show that the unique steady-state solution is nonlinearly stable, which means any viscosity weak solution of fractal Burgers equation, starting close to the steady-state solution, will return to the steady state as $trightarrowinfty$.
