We build and probe a $mathbb{Z}_2$ spin liquid in a programmable quantum device, the D-Wave DW-2000Q. Specifically, we observe the classical 8-vertex and 6-vertex (spin ice) states and transitions between them. To realize this state of matter, we design a Hamiltonian with combinatorial gauge symmetry using only pairwise-qubit interactions and a transverse field, i.e., interactions which are accessible in this quantum device. The combinatorial gauge symmetry remains exact along the full quantum annealing path, landing the system onto the classical 8-vertex model at the endpoint of the path. The output configurations from the device allows us to directly observe the loop structure of the classical model. Moreover, we deform the Hamiltonian so as to vary the weights of the 8 vertices and show that we can selectively attain the classical 6-vertex (ice) model, or drive the system into a ferromagnetic state. We present studies of the classical phase diagram of the system as function of the 8-vertex deformations and effective temperature, which we control by varying the relative strengths of the programmable couplings, and we show that the experimental results are consistent with theoretical analysis. Finally, we identify additional capabilities that, if added to these devices, would allow us to realize $mathbb{Z}_2$ quantum spin liquids on which to build topological qubits.

We present a study of a simple model antiferromagnet consisting of a sum of nearest neighbor SO($N$) singlet projectors on the Kagome lattice. Our model shares some features with the popular $S=1/2$ Kagome antiferromagnet but is specifically designed to be free of the sign-problem of quantum Monte Carlo. In our numerical analysis, we find as a function of $N$ a quadrupolar magnetic state and a wide range of a quantum spin liquid. A solvable large-$N$ generalization suggests that the quantum spin liquid in our original model is a gapped ${mathbb Z}_2$ topological phase. Supporting this assertion, a numerical study of the entanglement entropy in the sign free model shows a quantized topological contribution.
Quantum spin liquids are long-range entangled phases whose magnetic correlations are determined by strong quantum fluctuations. While an overarching principle specifying the precise microscopic coupling scenarios for which quantum spin-liquid behavio r arises is unknown, it is well-established that they are preferably found in spin systems where the corresponding classical limit of spin magnitudes $Srightarrowinfty$ exhibits a macroscopic ground state degeneracy, so-called classical spin liquids. Spiral spin liquids represent a special family of classical spin liquids where degenerate manifolds of spin spirals form closed contours or surfaces in momentum space. Here, we investigate the potential of spiral spin liquids to evoke quantum spin-liquid behavior when the spin magnitude is tuned from the classical $Srightarrowinfty$ limit to the quantum $S=1/2$ case. To this end, we first use the Luttinger-Tisza method to formulate a general scheme which allows one to construct new spiral spin liquids based on bipartite lattices. We apply this approach to the two-dimensional square lattice and the three-dimensional hcp lattice to design classical spiral spin-liquid phases which have not been previously studied. By employing the pseudofermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) technique we investigate the effects of quantum fluctuations when the classical spins are replaced by quantum $S=1/2$ spins. We indeed find that extended spiral spin-liquid regimes change into paramagnetic quantum phases possibly realizing quantum spin liquids. Remnants of the degenerate spiral surfaces are still discernible in the momentum-resolved susceptibility, even in the quantum $S=1/2$ case. In total, this corroborates the potential of classical spiral spin liquids to induce more complex non-magnetic quantum phases.
The ground-state ordering and dynamics of the two-dimensional (2D) S=1/2 frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet Cs_2CuCl_4 is explored using neutron scattering in high magnetic fields. We find that the dynamic correlations show a highly dispersive con tinuum of excited states, characteristic of the RVB state, arising from pairs of S=1/2 spinons. Quantum renormalization factors for the excitation energies (1.65) and incommensuration (0.56) are large.
We present a mixed spin-(1/2, 5/2) chain composed of a charge-transfer salt (4-Br-$o$-MePy-V)FeCl$_4$. We observe the entire magnetization curve up to saturation, which exhibits a clear Lieb-Mattis magnetization plateau and subsequent quantum phase t ransition towards the gapless Luttinger-liquid phase. The observed magnetic behavior is quantitatively explained by a mixed spin-(1/2, 5/2) chain model. The present results demonstrate a quantum many-body effect based on quantum topology and provide a new stage in the search for topological properties in condensed matter physics.
We construct a short-range resonating valence-bond state (RVB) on the ruby lattice, using projected entangled-pair states (PEPS) with bond dimension $D=3$. By introducing non-local moves to the dimer patterns on the torus, we distinguish four distinc t sectors in the space of dimer coverings, which is a signature of the topological nature of the RVB wave function. Furthermore, by calculating the reduced density matrix of a bipartition of the RVB state on an infinite cylinder and exploring its entanglement entropy, we confirm the topological nature of the RVB wave function by obtaining non-zero topological contribution, $gamma=-rm{ln} 2$, consistent with that of a $mathbb{Z}_2$ topological quantum spin liquid. We also calculate the ground-state energy of the spin-$frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the ruby lattice and compare it with the RVB energy. Finally, we construct a quantum-dimer model for the ruby lattice and discuss it as a possible parent Hamiltonian for the RVB wave function.
