On-demand deployments of millimeter-wave (mmWave) access points (APs) carried by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are considered today as a potential solution to enhance the performance of 5G+ networks. The battery lifetime of modern UAVs, though, limits the flight times in such systems. In this letter, we evaluate a feasible deployment alternative for temporary capacity boost in the areas with highly fluctuating user demands. The approach is to land UAV-based mmWave APs on the nearby buildings instead of hovering over the area. Within the developed mathematical framework, we compare the system-level performance of airborne and landed deployments by taking into account the full operation cycle of the employed drones. Our numerical results demonstrate that the choice of the UAV deployment option is determined by an interplay of the separation distance between the service area and the UAV charging station, drone battery lifetime, and the number of aerial APs in use. The presented methodology and results can support efficient on-demand deployments of UAV-based mmWave APs in prospective 5G+ networks.

The capability of smarter networked devices to dynamically select appropriate radio connectivity options is especially important in the emerging millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems to mitigate abrupt link blockage in complex environments. To enrich the levels of diversity, mobile mmWave relays can be employed for improved connection reliability. These are considered by 3GPP for on-demand densification on top of the static mmWave infrastructure. However, performance dynamics of mobile mmWave relaying is not nearly well explored, especially in realistic conditions, such as urban vehicular scenarios. In this paper, we develop a mathematical framework for the performance evaluation of mmWave vehicular relaying in a typical street deployment. We analyze and compare alternative connectivity strategies by quantifying the performance gains made available to smart devices in the presence of mmWave relays. We identify situations where the use of mmWave vehicular relaying is particularly beneficial. Our methodology and results can support further standardization and deployment of mmWave relaying in more intelligent 5G+ all-mmWave cellular networks.
The recently standardized millimeter wave-based 3GPP New Radio technology is expected to become an enabler for both enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) and ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) services specified to future 5G systems. One of the first steps in mathematical modeling of such systems is the characterization of the session resource request probability mass function (pmf) as a function of the channel conditions, cell size, application demands, user location and system parameters including modulation and coding schemes employed at the air interface. Unfortunately, this pmf cannot be expressed via elementary functions. In this paper, we develop an accurate approximation of the sought pmf. First, we show that Normal distribution provides a fairly accurate approximation to the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the signal-to-noise ratio for communication systems operating in the millimeter frequency band, further allowing evaluating the resource request pmf via error function. We also investigate the impact of shadow fading on the resource request pmf.

Due to its mobility and agility, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has emerged as a promising technology for various tasks, such as sensing, inspection and delivery. However, a typical UAV has limited energy storage and cannot fly a long distance without being recharged. This motivates several existing proposals to use trucks and other ground vehicles to offer riding to help UAVs save energy and expand the operation radius. We present the first theoretical study regarding how UAVs should optimally hitch on ground vehicles, considering vehicles different travelling patterns and supporting capabilities. For a single UAV, we derive closed-form optimal vehicle selection and hitching strategy. When vehicles only support hitching, a UAV would prefer the vehicle that can carry it closest to its final destination. When vehicles can offer hitching plus charging, the UAV may hitch on a vehicle that carries it farther away from its destination and hitch a longer distance. The UAV may also prefer to hitch on a slower vehicle for the benefit of battery recharging. For multiple UAVs in need of hitching, we develop the max-saving algorithm (MSA) to optimally match UAV-vehicle collaboration. We prove that the MSA globally optimizes the total hitching benefits for the UAVs.

Airborne (or flying) base stations (ABSs) embedded on drones or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can be deemed as a central element of envisioned 6G cellular networks where significant cell densification with mmWave/Terahertz communications will be pa rt of the ecosystem. Nonetheless, one of the key challenges facing the deployment of ABSs is the inherent limited available energy of the drone, which limits the hovering time for serving ground users to the orders of minutes. This impediment deteriorate the performance of the UAV-enabled cellular network and hinders wide adoption and use of the technology. In this paper, we propose robotic airborne base stations (RABSs) with grasping capabilities to increase the serving time of ground users by multiple orders of magnitude compared to nominal hovering based operation. More specifically, to perform the grasping task, the RABS is equipped with a versatile, albeit, general purpose gripper manipulator. Depending on the type of the gripper RABS can provide service in the range of hours, compared to minutes of hovering based ABSs. In theory it is possible that grasping can be energy neutral, hence the time of service can be bounded by the communications energy consumption. To illustrate the case, energy consumption comparison between hovering and grasping is performed in order to reveal the significant benefits of the proposed approach. Finally, overarching challenges, design considerations for RABS, and future avenues of research are outlined to realize the full potential of the proposed robotic aerial base stations.
Due to its high mobility and flexible deployment, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is drawing unprecedented interest in both military and civil applications to enable agile wireless communications and provide ubiquitous connectivity. Mainly operating in an open environment, UAV communications can benefit from dominant line-of-sight links; however, it on the other hand renders the UAVs more vulnerable to malicious eavesdropping or jamming attacks. Recently, physical layer security (PLS), which exploits the inherent randomness of the wireless channels for secure communications, has been introduced to UAV systems as an important complement to the conventional cryptography-based approaches. In this paper, a comprehensive survey on the current achievements of the UAV-aided wireless communications is conducted from the PLS perspective. We first introduce the basic concepts of UAV communications including the typical static/mobile deployment scenarios, the unique characteristics of air-to-ground channels, as well as various roles that a UAV may act when PLS is concerned. Then, we introduce the widely used secrecy performance metrics and start by reviewing the secrecy performance analysis and enhancing techniques for statically deployed UAV systems, and extend the discussion to a more general scenario where the UAVs mobility is further exploited. For both cases, respectively, we summarize the commonly adopted methodologies in the corresponding analysis and design, then describe important works in the literature in detail. Finally, potential research directions and challenges are discussed to provide an outlook for future works in the area of UAV-PLS in 5G and beyond networks.
