The recently standardized millimeter wave-based 3GPP New Radio technology is expected to become an enabler for both enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) and ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) services specified to future 5G systems. One of the first steps in mathematical modeling of such systems is the characterization of the session resource request probability mass function (pmf) as a function of the channel conditions, cell size, application demands, user location and system parameters including modulation and coding schemes employed at the air interface. Unfortunately, this pmf cannot be expressed via elementary functions. In this paper, we develop an accurate approximation of the sought pmf. First, we show that Normal distribution provides a fairly accurate approximation to the cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the signal-to-noise ratio for communication systems operating in the millimeter frequency band, further allowing evaluating the resource request pmf via error function. We also investigate the impact of shadow fading on the resource request pmf.

We provide an overview of the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) work on evolving the 5G wireless technology to support non-terrestrial satellite networks. Adapting 5G to support non-terrestrial networks entails a holistic design spanning acro ss multiple areas from radio access network to services and system aspects to core and terminals. In this article, we describe the main topics of non-terrestrial networks, explain in detail the design aspects, and share various design rationales influencing standardization.
The capability of smarter networked devices to dynamically select appropriate radio connectivity options is especially important in the emerging millimeter-wave (mmWave) systems to mitigate abrupt link blockage in complex environments. To enrich the levels of diversity, mobile mmWave relays can be employed for improved connection reliability. These are considered by 3GPP for on-demand densification on top of the static mmWave infrastructure. However, performance dynamics of mobile mmWave relaying is not nearly well explored, especially in realistic conditions, such as urban vehicular scenarios. In this paper, we develop a mathematical framework for the performance evaluation of mmWave vehicular relaying in a typical street deployment. We analyze and compare alternative connectivity strategies by quantifying the performance gains made available to smart devices in the presence of mmWave relays. We identify situations where the use of mmWave vehicular relaying is particularly beneficial. Our methodology and results can support further standardization and deployment of mmWave relaying in more intelligent 5G+ all-mmWave cellular networks.
On-demand deployments of millimeter-wave (mmWave) access points (APs) carried by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are considered today as a potential solution to enhance the performance of 5G+ networks. The battery lifetime of modern UAVs, though, lim its the flight times in such systems. In this letter, we evaluate a feasible deployment alternative for temporary capacity boost in the areas with highly fluctuating user demands. The approach is to land UAV-based mmWave APs on the nearby buildings instead of hovering over the area. Within the developed mathematical framework, we compare the system-level performance of airborne and landed deployments by taking into account the full operation cycle of the employed drones. Our numerical results demonstrate that the choice of the UAV deployment option is determined by an interplay of the separation distance between the service area and the UAV charging station, drone battery lifetime, and the number of aerial APs in use. The presented methodology and results can support efficient on-demand deployments of UAV-based mmWave APs in prospective 5G+ networks.
Despite numerous advantages, non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique can bring additional interference for the neighboring ultra-dense networks if the power consumption of the system is not properly optimized. While targeting on the green com munication concept, in this paper, we propose an energy-efficient downlink resource allocation scheme for a NOMA-equipped cellular network. The objective of this work is to allocate subchannels and power of the base station among the users so that the overall energy efficiency is maximized. Since this problem is NP-hard, we attempt to find an elegant solution with reasonable complexity that provides good performance for some realistic applications. To this end, we decompose the problem into a subchannel allocation subproblem followed by a power loading subproblem that allocates power to each users data stream on each of its allocated subchannels. We first employ a many-to-many matching model under the assumption of uniform power loading in order to obtain the solution of the first subproblem with reasonable performance. Once the the subchannel-user mapping information is known from the first solution, we propose a geometric programming (GP)-based power loading scheme upon approximating the energy efficiency of the system by a ratio of two posynomials. The techniques adopted for these subproblems better exploit the available multi-user diversity compared to the techniques used in an earlier work. Having observed the computational overhead of the GP-based power loading scheme, we also propose a suboptimal computationally-efficient algorithm for the power loading subproblem with a polynomial time complexity that provides reasonably good performance. Extensive simulation has been conducted to verify that our proposed solution schemes always outperform the existing work while consuming much less power at the base station.
In this paper, we propose fairness-oriented packet scheduling (PS) schemes with power-efficient control mechanism for future packet radio systems. In general, the radio resource management functionality plays an important role in new OFDMA based netw orks. The control of the network resource division among the users is performed by packet scheduling functionality based on maximizing cell coverage and capacity satisfying, and certain quality of service requirements. Moreover, multiantenna transmit-receive schemes provide additional flexibility to packet scheduler functionality. In order to mitigate inter-cell and co-channel interference problems in OFDMA cellular networks soft frequency reuse with different power masks patterns is used. Stemming from the earlier enhanced proportional fair scheduler studies for single-input multiple-output (SIMO) and multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) systems, we extend the development of efficient packet scheduling algorithms by adding transmit power considerations in the overall priority metrics calculations and scheduling decisions. Furthermore, we evaluate the proposed scheduling schemes by simulating practical orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) based packet radio system in terms of throughput, coverage and fairness distribution among users. As a concrete example, under reduced overall transmit power constraint and unequal power distribution for different sub-bands, we demonstrate that by using the proposed power-aware multi-user scheduling schemes, significant coverage and fairness improvements in the order of 70% and 20%, respectively, can be obtained, at the expense of average throughput loss of only 15%.
