We study how to leverage Web images to augment human-curated object detection datasets. Our approach is two-pronged. On the one hand, we retrieve Web images by image-to-image search, which incurs less domain shift from the curated data than other search methods. The Web images are diverse, supplying a wide variety of object poses, appearances, their interactions with the context, etc. On the other hand, we propose a novel learning method motivated by two parallel lines of work that explore unlabeled data for image classification: self-training and self-supervised learning. They fail to improve object detectors in their vanilla forms due to the domain gap between the Web images and curated datasets. To tackle this challenge, we propose a selective net to rectify the supervision signals in Web images. It not only identifies positive bounding boxes but also creates a safe zone for mining hard negative boxes. We report state-of-the-art results on detecting backpacks and chairs from everyday scenes, along with other challenging object classes.

In this paper, we propose a novel self-supervised representation learning method, Self-EMD, for object detection. Our method directly trained on unlabeled non-iconic image dataset like COCO, instead of commonly used iconic-object image dataset like I mageNet. We keep the convolutional feature maps as the image embedding to preserve spatial structures and adopt Earth Movers Distance (EMD) to compute the similarity between two embeddings. Our Faster R-CNN (ResNet50-FPN) baseline achieves 39.8% mAP on COCO, which is on par with the state of the art self-supervised methods pre-trained on ImageNet. More importantly, it can be further improved to 40.4% mAP with more unlabeled images, showing its great potential for leveraging more easily obtained unlabeled data. Code will be made available.
Most modern approaches for domain adaptive semantic segmentation rely on continued access to source data during adaptation, which may be infeasible due to computational or privacy constraints. We focus on source-free domain adaptation for semantic se gmentation, wherein a source model must adapt itself to a new target domain given only unlabeled target data. We propose Self-Supervised Selective Self-Training (S4T), a source-free adaptation algorithm that first uses the models pixel-level predictive consistency across diverse views of each target image along with model confidence to classify pixel predictions as either reliable or unreliable. Next, the model is self-trained, using predicted pseudolabels for reliable predictions and pseudolabels inferred via a selective interpolation strategy for unreliable ones. S4T matches or improves upon the state-of-the-art in source-free adaptation on 3 standard benchmarks for semantic segmentation within a single epoch of adaptation.
We tackle the problem of learning object detectors without supervision. Differently from weakly-supervised object detection, we do not assume image-level class labels. Instead, we extract a supervisory signal from audio-visual data, using the audio c omponent to teach the object detector. While this problem is related to sound source localisation, it is considerably harder because the detector must classify the objects by type, enumerate each instance of the object, and do so even when the object is silent. We tackle this problem by first designing a self-supervised framework with a contrastive objective that jointly learns to classify and localise objects. Then, without using any supervision, we simply use these self-supervised labels and boxes to train an image-based object detector. With this, we outperform previous unsupervised and weakly-supervised detectors for the task of object detection and sound source localization. We also show that we can align this detector to ground-truth classes with as little as one label per pseudo-class, and show how our method can learn to detect generic objects that go beyond instruments, such as airplanes and cats.

We consider the problem of unsupervised domain adaptation for image classification. To learn target-domain-aware features from the unlabeled data, we create a self-supervised pretext task by augmenting the unlabeled data with a certain type of transf ormation (specifically, image rotation) and ask the learner to predict the properties of the transformation. However, the obtained feature representation may contain a large amount of irrelevant information with respect to the main task. To provide further guidance, we force the feature representation of the augmented data to be consistent with that of the original data. Intuitively, the consistency introduces additional constraints to representation learning, therefore, the learned representation is more likely to focus on the right information about the main task. Our experimental results validate the proposed method and demonstrate state-of-the-art performance on classical domain adaptation benchmarks. Weakly Supervised Object Detection (WSOD) has emerged as an effective tool to train object detectors using only the image-level category labels. However, without object-level labels, WSOD detectors are prone to detect bounding boxes on salient object s, clustered objects and discriminative object parts. Moreover, the image-level category labels do not enforce consistent object detection across different transformations of the same images. To address the above issues, we propose a Comprehensive Attention Self-Distillation (CASD) training approach for WSOD. To balance feature learning among all object instances, CASD computes the comprehensive attention aggregated from multiple transformations and feature layers of the same images. To enforce consistent spatial supervision on objects, CASD conducts self-distillation on the WSOD networks, such that the comprehensive attention is approximated simultaneously by multiple transformations and feature layers of the same images. CASD produces new state-of-the-art WSOD results on standard benchmarks such as PASCAL VOC 2007/2012 and MS-COCO.
