Phonon trapping has an immense impact in many areas of science and technology, from the antennas of interferometric gravitational wave detectors to chip-scale quantum micro- and nano-mechanical oscillators. It usually relies on the mechanical suspension--an approach, while isolating selected vibrational modes, leads to serious drawbacks for interrogation of the trapped phonons, including limited heat capacity and excess noises via measurements. To circumvent these constraints, we realize a new paradigm of phonon trapping using mechanical bound states in the continuum (BICs) with topological features and conducted an in-depth characterization of the mechanical losses both at room and cryogenic temperatures. Our findings of mechanical BICs combining the microwave frequency and macroscopic size unveil a unique platform for realizing mechanical oscillators in both classical and quantum regimes. The paradigm of mechanical BICs might lead to unprecedented sensing modalities for applications such as rare-event searches and the exploration of the foundations of quantum mechanics in unreached parameter spaces.

We analyze the band topology of acoustic phonons in 2D materials by considering the interplay of spatial and internal symmetries with additional constraints that arise from the physical context. These supplemental constraints trace back to the Nambu- Goldstone theorem and the requirements of structural stability. We show that this interplay can give rise to previously unaddressed non-trivial nodal charges that are associated with the crossing of the acoustic phonon branches at the center ($Gamma$-point) of the phononic Brillouin zone. We moreover apply our perspective to the concrete context of graphene, where we demonstrate that the phonon spectrum harbors these kinds of non-trivial nodal charges. Apart from its fundamental appeal, this analysis is physically consequential and dictates how the phonon dispersion is affected when graphene is grown on a substrate. Given the generality of our framework, we anticipate that our strategy that thrives on combining physical context with insights from topology should be widely applicable in characterizing systems beyond electronic band theory.
In the past decades, topological concepts have emerged to classify matter states beyond the Ginzburg-Landau symmetry breaking paradigm. The underlying global invariants are usually characterized by integers, such as Chern or winding numbers. Very rec ently, band topology characterized by non-Abelian topological charges has been proposed, which possess non-commutative and fruitful braiding structures with multiple (>1) bandgaps entangled together. Despite many potential exquisite applications including quantum computations, no experimental observation of non-Abelian topological charges has been reported. Here, we experimentally observe the non-Abelian topological charges in a PT (parity and time-reversal) symmetric system. More importantly, we propose non-Abelian bulk-edge correspondence, where edge states are found to be described by non-Abelian charges. Our work opens the door towards non-Abelian topological phase characterization and manipulation.

Absolute Parallelism (AP) has many interesting features: large symmetry group of equations; field irreducibility with respect to this group; vast list of consistent second order equations not restricted to Lagrangian ones. There is the variant of A P which solutions are free of arising singularities if D=5; in this case AP acquires topological features of nonlinear sigma-model. Starting with topological charge, one can also introduce the topological quasi-charge groups for field configurations having some symmetry. For 4D, considering symmetrical equipped 0-(sub)manifolds in R^3, we find QC-groups for some symmetries (subsets of O_3) and describe their morphisms. Differential 3-form of topological charge (dual to topological current) is derived, as well as O_3-quasi-charge 1-form. Results of topological classification of symmetric configurations in 5D case (alighting on evident parallels with the Standard Model combinatorics of fundamental particles) are announced. An example of SO_2-symmetric configuration is considered; (quasi-)charge forms (self-dual and anti-self-dual) are obtained. In conclusion, we propose a variant of experiment with single photon interference (or with bi-photon non-local correlations) which should verify a possible non-local (spaghetti-like) 5D ontology of particles.

Through a combination of experiment and theory we establish the possibility of achieving strong tuning of Fano resonances (FRs), by allowing their usual two-path geometry to interfere with an additional, intruder, continuum. As the coupling strength to this intruder is varied, we predict strong modulations of the resonance line shape that, in principle at least, may exceed the amplitude of the original FR itself. For a proof-of-concept demonstration of this phenomenon, we construct a nanoscale interferometer from nonlocally coupled quantum point contacts and utilize the unique features of their density of states to realize the intruder. External control of the intruder coupling is enabled by means of an applied magnetic field, in the presence of which we demonstrate the predicted distortions of the FR. This general scheme for resonant control should be broadly applicable to a variety of wave-based systems, opening up the possibility of new applications in areas such as chemical and biological sensing and secure communications.
In high-purity n-type GaAs under strong magnetic field, we are able to isolate a lambda system composed of two Zeeman states of neutral-donor bound electrons and the lowest Zeeman state of bound excitons. When the two-photon detuning of this system i s zero, we observe a pronounced dip in the excited-state photoluminescence indicating the creation of the coherent population-trapped state. Our data are consistent with a steady-state three-level density-matrix model. The observation of coherent population trapping in GaAs indicates that this and similar semiconductor systems could be used for various EIT-type experiments.
