Ambient sound scenes typically comprise multiple short events occurring on top of a somewhat stationary background. We consider the task of separating these events from the background, which we call foreground-background ambient sound scene separation. We propose a deep learning-based separation framework with a suitable feature normaliza-tion scheme and an optional auxiliary network capturing the background statistics, and we investigate its ability to handle the great variety of sound classes encountered in ambient sound scenes, which have often not been seen in training. To do so, we create single-channel foreground-background mixtures using isolated sounds from the DESED and Audioset datasets, and we conduct extensive experiments with mixtures of seen or unseen sound classes at various signal-to-noise ratios. Our experimental findings demonstrate the generalization ability of the proposed approach.

Obtaining high-quality heart and lung sounds enables clinicians to accurately assess a newborns cardio-respiratory health and provide timely care. However, noisy chest sound recordings are common, hindering timely and accurate assessment. A new Non-n egative Matrix Co-Factorisation-based approach is proposed to separate noisy chest sound recordings into heart, lung, and noise components to address this problem. This method is achieved through training with 20 high-quality heart and lung sounds, in parallel with separating the sounds of the noisy recording. The method was tested on 68 10-second noisy recordings containing both heart and lung sounds and compared to the current state of the art Non-negative Matrix Factorisation methods. Results show significant improvements in heart and lung sound quality scores respectively, and improved accuracy of 3.6bpm and 1.2bpm in heart and breathing rate estimation respectively, when compared to existing methods.
Previous methods for representing scene images based on deep learning primarily consider either the foreground or background information as the discriminating clues for the classification task. However, scene images also require additional informatio n (hybrid) to cope with the inter-class similarity and intra-class variation problems. In this paper, we propose to use hybrid features in addition to foreground and background features to represent scene images. We suppose that these three types of information could jointly help to represent scene image more accurately. To this end, we adopt three VGG-16 architectures pre-trained on ImageNet, Places, and Hybrid (both ImageNet and Places) datasets for the corresponding extraction of foreground, background and hybrid information. All these three types of deep features are further aggregated to achieve our final features for the representation of scene images. Extensive experiments on two large benchmark scene datasets (MIT-67 and SUN-397) show that our method produces the state-of-the-art classification performance.
In this paper, we investigate the impact of different standard environmental sound representations (spectrograms) on the recognition performance and adversarial attack robustness of a victim residual convolutional neural network. Averaged over variou s experiments on three benchmarking environmental sound datasets, we found the ResNet-18 model outperforms other deep learning architectures such as GoogLeNet and AlexNet both in terms of classification accuracy and the number of training parameters. Therefore we set this model as our front-end classifier for subsequent investigations. Herein, we measure the impact of different settings required for generating more informative mel-frequency cepstral coefficient (MFCC), short-time Fourier transform (STFT), and discrete wavelet transform (DWT) representations on our front-end model. This measurement involves comparing the classification performance over the adversarial robustness. On the balance of average budgets allocated by adversary and the cost of attack, we demonstrate an inverse relationship between recognition accuracy and model robustness against six attack algorithms. Moreover, our experimental results show that while the ResNet-18 model trained on DWT spectrograms achieves the highest recognition accuracy, attacking this model is relatively more costly for the adversary compared to other 2D representations.
Acoustic Scene Classification (ASC) is a challenging task, as a single scene may involve multiple events that contain complex sound patterns. For example, a cooking scene may contain several sound sources including silverware clinking, chopping, fryi ng, etc. What complicates ASC more is that classes of different activities could have overlapping sounds patterns (e.g. both cooking and dishwashing could have silverware clinking sound). In this paper, we propose a multi-head attention network to model the complex temporal input structures for ASC. The proposed network takes the audios time-frequency representation as input, and it leverages standard VGG plus LSTM layers to extract high-level feature representation. Further more, it applies multiple attention heads to summarize various patterns of sound events into fixed dimensional representation, for the purpose of final scene classification. The whole network is trained in an end-to-end fashion with back-propagation. Experimental results confirm that our model discovers meaningful sound patterns through the attention mechanism, without using explicit supervision in the alignment. We evaluated our proposed model using DCASE 2018 Task 5 dataset, and achieved competitive performance on par with previous winners results.
Weakly Labelled learning has garnered lot of attention in recent years due to its potential to scale Sound Event Detection (SED) and is formulated as Multiple Instance Learning (MIL) problem. This paper proposes a Multi-Task Learning (MTL) framework for learning from Weakly Labelled Audio data which encompasses the traditional MIL setup. To show the utility of proposed framework, we use the input TimeFrequency representation (T-F) reconstruction as the auxiliary task. We show that the chosen auxiliary task de-noises internal T-F representation and improves SED performance under noisy recordings. Our second contribution is introducing two step Attention Pooling mechanism. By having 2-steps in attention mechanism, the network retains better T-F level information without compromising SED performance. The visualisation of first step and second step attention weights helps in localising the audio-event in T-F domain. For evaluating the proposed framework, we remix the DCASE 2019 task 1 acoustic scene data with DCASE 2018 Task 2 sounds event data under 0, 10 and 20 db SNR resulting in a multi-class Weakly labelled SED problem. The proposed total framework outperforms existing benchmark models over all SNRs, specifically 22.3 %, 12.8 %, 5.9 % improvement over benchmark model on 0, 10 and 20 dB SNR respectively. We carry out ablation study to determine the contribution of each auxiliary task and 2-step Attention Pooling to the SED performance improvement. The code is publicly released
