Self-synchronization is a ubiquitous phenomenon in nature, in which oscillators are collectively locked in frequency and phase through mutual interactions. While self-synchronization requires the forced excitation of at least one of the oscillators, we demonstrate that this mechanism spontaneously appears due to the activation from thermal fluctuations. By performing molecular dynamic simulations, we demonstrate the self-synchronization of thermal phonons in a platform supporting doped silicon resonators. We find that thermal phonons are spontaneously converging to the same frequency and phase. In addition, the dependencies to intrinsic frequency difference and coupling strength agree well with the Kuramoto model predictions. More interestingly, we find that a balance between energy dissipation resulting from phonon-phonon scattering and potential energy between oscillators is required to maintain synchronization. Finally, a wavelet transform approach corroborates the generation of coherent thermal phonons in the collective state of oscillators. Our study provides a new perspective on self-synchronization and on the relationship between fluctuations and coherence.

We investigate the length distribution of self-assembled, long and stiff polymers at thermal equilibrium. Our analysis is based on calculating the partition functions of stiff polymers of variable lengths in the elastic regime. Our conclusion is that the length distribution of this self-assembled system follows closely the exponential distribution, except at the short length limit. We then discuss the implications of our results on the experimentally observed length distributions in amyloid fibrils.

We study the effect of non-equilibrium quasiparticles on the operation of a superconducting device (a qubit or a resonator), including heating of the quasiparticles by the device operation. Focusing on the competition between heating via low-frequenc y photon absorption and cooling via photon and phonon emission, we obtain a remarkably simple non-thermal stationary solution of the kinetic equation for the quasiparticle distribution function. We estimate the influence of quasiparticles on relaxation and excitation rates for transmon qubits, and relate our findings to recent experiments.
We review some theories of non-equilibrium Bose-Einstein condensates in potentials, in particular of the Bose-Einstein condensate of polaritons. We discuss such condensates, which are steady-states established through a balance of gain and loss, in t he complementary limits of a double-well potential and a random disorder potential. For equilibrium condensates, the former corresponds to a Josephson junction, whereas the latter is the setting for the superfluid/Bose glass transition. We explore the non-equilibrium generalization of these phenomena, and highlight connections with mode selection and synchronization.

We analyse the influence of optically generated non-equilibrium phonons on the spin relaxation and effective spin temperature of an individual Cr atom inserted in a quantum dot. Using a three pulses pump-probe technique, we show that the spin relaxat ion measured in resonant optical pumping experiments strongly depends on the optical excitation conditions. We observe for an isolated Cr in the dark a heating time shorter than a few hundreds $ns$ after an initial high power non-resonant excitation pulse. A cooling time larger than a few tens of $mu s$, independent on the excitation, is obtained in the same experimental conditions. We show that a tunable spin-lattice coupling dependent on the density of non-equilibrium phonons can explain the observed dynamics. Low energy excitation conditions are found where the Cr spin states S$_z$=$pm$1 can be efficiently populated by a non-resonant optical excitation, prepared and read-out by resonant optical pumping and conserved in the dark during a few $mu$s.

We theoretically investigate the energy relaxation rate of magnons and phonons near the resonance points to clarify the underlying mechanism of heat transport in ferromagnetic materials. We find that the simple two-temperature model is valid for the one-phonon/one-magnon process, as the rate of energy exchange between magnons and phonons is proportional to the temperature difference between them, and it is independent of temperature in the high temperature limit. We found that the magnon-phonon relaxation time due to the one-phonon/one-magnon interaction could be reduced to 1.48 $mu s$ at the resonance point by applying an external magnetic field. It means that the resonance effect plays a significant role in enhancing the total magnon-phonon energy exchange rate, apart from the higher order interaction processes.
