We make some remarks on possible definition of open string path integral in the presence of additional boundary couplings corresponding to the presence of masses at the ends of the string. These couplings are not conformally invariant implying that as in a non-critical string case one is to integrate over the 1d metric or reparametrizations of the boundary. We compute the partition function on the disc in the presence of an additional constant gauge field background and comment on the structure of the corresponding scattering amplitudes.

We propose boundary conditions on a two dimensional 6-vertex model, which is defined on the lightcone lattice for an open string worldsheet. We show that, in the continuum limit, the degrees of freedom of this 6-vertex model describe a target space c oordinate compactified on a circle of radius R, which is related to the vertex weights. This conclusion had already been established for the case of a 6-vertex model on the worldsheet lattice for the propagator of a closed string. This exercise illustrates how the Bethe ansatz works in the presence of boundaries, at least of this particular type.
We compute leading order quantum corrections to the Regge trajectory of a rotating string with massive endpoints using semiclassical methods. We expand the bosonic string action around a classical rotating solution to quadratic order in the fluctuati ons and perform the canonical quantization of the resulting theory. For a rotating string in $D$ dimensions the intercept receives contributions from $D-3$ transverse modes and one mode in the plane of rotation, in addition to a contribution due to the Polchinski-Strominger term of the non-critical effective string action when $D eq26$. The intercept at leading order is proportional to the expectation value of the worldsheet Hamiltonian of the fluctuations, and this is shown explicitly in several cases. All contributions to the intercept are considered, and we show a simple physical method to renormalize the divergences in them. The intercept converges to known results at the massless limit, and corrections from the masses are explicitly calculated at the long string limit. In the process we also determine the quantum spectrum of the string with massive endpoints, and analyze the asymmetric case of two different endpoint masses.

The central theme of this thesis is noncommutativity in string theory. We explore in detail how noncommutative structures can emerge in case of the interacting bosonic string and even in the fermionic sector of superstring theory. We have shown in va rious approaches that string coordinates must be noncommutative in order to be compatible with boundary conditions. These noncommutative structures lead to new involutive algebra of constraints but generate same Virasoro algebra, indicating the internal consistency of our analysis

We study covariant open bosonic string field theories on multiple $Dp$-branes by using the deformed cubic string field theory which is equivalent to the string field theory in the proper-time gauge. Constructing the Fock space representations of the three-string vertex and the four-string vertex on multiple $Dp$-branes, we obtain the field theoretical effective action in the zero-slope limit. On the multiple $D0$-branes, the effective action reduces to the Banks-Fishler-Shenker-Susskind (BFSS) matrix model. We also discuss the relation between the open string field theory on multiple $D$-instantons in the zero-slope limit and the Ishibashi-Kawai-Kitazawa-Tsuchiya (IKKT) matrix model. The covariant open string field theory on multiple $Dp$-branes would be useful to study the non-perturbative properties of quantum field theories in $(p+1)$-dimensions in the framework of the string theory. The non-zero-slope corrections may be evaluated systematically by using the covariant string field theory.

The sum over planar multi-loop diagrams in the NS+ sector of type 0 open strings in flat spacetime has been proposed by Thorn as a candidate to resolve non-perturbative issues of gauge theories in the large $N$ limit. With $SU (N)$ Chan-Paton factors , the sum over planar open string multi-loop diagrams describes the t Hooft limit $Nto infty$ with $Ng_s^2$ held fixed. By including only planar diagrams in the sum the usual mechanism for the cancellation of loop divergences (which occurs, for example, among the planar and Mobius strip diagrams by choosing a specific gauge group) is not available and a renormalization procedure is needed. In this article the renormalization is achieved by suspending total momentum conservation by an amount $pequiv sum_i^n k_i eq 0$ at the level of the integrands in the integrals over the moduli and analytically continuing them to $p=0$ at the very end. This procedure has been successfully tested for the 2 and 3 gluon planar loop amplitudes by Thorn. Gauge invariance is respected and the correct running of the coupling in the limiting gauge field theory was also correctly obtained. In this article we extend those results in two directions. First, we generalize the renormalization method to an arbitrary $n$-gluon planar loop amplitude giving full details for the 4-point case. One of our main results is to provide a fully renormalized amplitude which is free of both UV and the usual spurious divergences leaving only the physical singularities in it. Second, using the complete renormalized amplitude, we extract the high-energy scattering regime at fixed angle (tensionless limit). Apart from obtaining the usual exponential falloff at high energies, we compute the full dependence on the scattering angle which shows the existence of a smooth connection between the Regge and hard scattering regimes.
