We present the $d+1$ formulation of Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (ESGB) theories in dimension $D=d+1$ and for arbitrary (spacelike or timelike) slicings. We first build an action which generalizes those of Gibbons-Hawking-York and Myers to ESGB theories, showing that they can be described by a Dirichlet variational principle. We then generalize the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) Lagrangian and Hamiltonian to ESGB theories, as well as the resulting $d+1$ decomposition of the equations of motion. Unlike general relativity, the canonical momenta of ESGB theories are nonlinear in the extrinsic curvature. This has two main implications: (i) the ADM Hamiltonian is generically multivalued, and the associated Hamiltonian evolution is not predictable; (ii) the $d+1$ equations of motion are quasilinear, and they may break down in strongly curved, highly dynamical regimes. Our results should be useful to guide future developments of numerical relativity for ESGB gravity in the nonperturbative regime.

We compute the Hamiltonian for spherically symmetric scalar field collapse in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in D dimensions using slicings that are regular across future horizons. We first reduce the Lagrangian to two dimensions using spherical symme try. We then show that choosing the spatial coordinate to be a function of the areal radius leads to a relatively simple Hamiltonian constraint whose gravitational part is the gradient of the generalized mass function. Next we complete the gauge fixing such that the metric is the Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet generalization of non-static Painleve-Gullstrand coordinates. Finally, we derive the resultant reduced equations of motion for the scalar field. These equations are suitable for use in numerical simulations of spherically symmetric scalar field collapse in Gauss-Bonnet gravity and can readily be generalized to other matter fields minimally coupled to gravity.
We discuss the cosmological evolution of a braneworld in five dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity. Our discussion allows the fifth (bulk) dimension to be space-like as well as time-like. The resulting equations of motion have the form of a cubic equatio n in the (H^2,(rho+sigma)^2) plane, where sigma is the brane tension and rho is the matter density. This allows us to conduct a comprehensive pictorial analysis of cosmological evolution for the Gauss-Bonnet brane. The many interesting properties of this braneworld include the possibility of accelerated expansion at late times. For a finite region in parameter space the accelerated expansion can be phantom-like so that w < -1. At late times, this branch approaches de Sitter space (w = -1) and avoids the big-rip singularities usually present in phantom models. For a time-like extra dimension the Gauss-Bonnet brane can bounce and avoid the initial singularity.
In this brief report, we investigate the existence of 4-dimensional static spherically symmetric black holes (BHs) in the Einstein-complex-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet (EcsGB) gravity with an arbitrary potential $V(phi)$ and a coupling $f(phi)$ between the sc alar field $phi$ and the Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term. We find that static regular BH solutions with complex scalar hairs do not exist. This conclusion does not depend on the coupling between the GB term and the scalar field, nor on the scalar potential $V(phi)$ and the presence of a cosmological constant $Lambda$ (which can be either positive or negative), as longer as the scalar field remains complex and is regular across the horizon.
Exact solutions with torsion in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity are derived. These solutions have a cross product structure of two constant curvature manifolds. The equations of motion give a relation for the coupling constants of the theory in order t o have solutions with nontrivial torsion. This relation is not the Chern-Simons combination. One of the solutions has a $AdS_2times S^3$ structure and is so the purely gravitational analogue of the Bertotti-Robinson space-time where the torsion can be seen as the dual of the covariantly constant electromagnetic field.
We study the post-Newtonian dynamics of black hole binaries in Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity theories. To this aim we build static, spherically symmetric black hole solutions at fourth order in the Gauss-Bonnet coupling $alpha$. We then skelet onize these solutions by reducing them to point particles with scalar field-dependent masses, showing that this procedure amounts to fixing the Wald entropy of the black holes during their slow inspiral. The cosmological value of the scalar field plays a crucial role in the dynamics of the binary. We compute the two-body Lagrangian at first post-Newtonian order and show that no regularization procedure is needed to obtain the Gauss-Bonnet contributions to the fields, which are finite. We illustrate the power of our approach by Pade-resumming the so-called sensitivities, which measure the coupling of the skeletonized body to the scalar field, for some specific theories of interest.
