We study a transition between a homogeneous and an inhomogeneous phase in a system of one-dimensional, Raman tunnel-coupled Bose gases. The homogeneous phase shows a flat density and phase profile, whereas the inhomogeneous ground state is characterized by periodic density ripples, and a soliton staircase in the phase difference. We show that under experimentally viable conditions the transition can be tuned by the wavevector difference $Q$ of the Raman beams and can be described by the Pokrovsky-Talapov model for the relative phase between the two condensates. Local imaging available in atom chip experiments allows to observe the soliton lattice directly, while modulation spectroscopy can be used to explore collective modes, such as the phonon mode arising from breaking of translation symmetry by the soliton lattice. In addition, we investigate regimes where the cold atom experiment deviates from the Pokrovsky-Talapov field theory. We predict unusual mesoscopic effects arising from the finite size of the system, such as quantized injection of solitons upon increasing $Q$, or the system size. For moderate values of $Q$ above criticality, we find that the density modulations in the two gases interplay with the relative phase profile and introduce novel features in the spatial structure of the mode wave-functions. Using an inhomogeneous Bogoliubov theory, we show that spatial quantum fluctuations are intertwined with the emerging soliton staircase. Finally, we comment on the prospects of the ultra-cold atom setup as a tunable platform studying quantum aspects of the Pokrovsky-Talapov theory in and out-of-equilibrium.

Ensembles with long-range interactions between particles are promising for revealing strong quantum collective effects and many-body phenomena. Here we study the ground-state phase diagram of a two-dimensional Bose system with quadrupolar interaction s using a diffusion Monte Carlo technique. We predict a quantum phase transition from a gas to a solid phase. The Lindemann ratio and the condensate fraction at the transition point are $gamma=0.269(4)$ and $n_0/n=0.031(4)$, correspondingly. We observe the strong rotonization of the collective excitation branch in the vicinity of the phase transition point. Our results can be probed using state-of-the-art experimental systems of various nature, such as quasi-two-dimensional systems of quadrupolar excitons in transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) trilayers, quadrupolar molecules, and excitons or Rydberg atoms with quadrupole moments induced by strong magnetic fields.
The realization of artificial gauge fields and spin-orbit coupling for ultra-cold quantum gases promises new insight into paradigm solid state systems. Here we experimentally probe the dispersion relation of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condens ate loaded into a translating optical lattice by observing its dynamical stability, and develop an effective band structure that provides a theoretical understanding of the locations of the band edges. This system presents exciting new opportunities for engineering condensed-matter analogs using the flexible toolbox of ultra-cold quantum gases.
We apply a kinetic model to predict the existence of an instability mechanism in elongated Bose-Einstein condensates. Our kinetic description, based on the Wigner formalism, is employed to highlight the existence of unstable Bogoliubov waves that may be excited in the counterpropagation configuration. We identify a dimensionless parameter, the Mach number at T = 0, that tunes different regimes of stability. We also estimate the magnitude of the main parameters at which two-stream instability is expected to be observed under typical experimental conditions.
Microcavity exciton-polaritons are quantum quasi-particles arising from the strong light-matter coupling. They have exhibited rich quantum dynamics rooted from bosonic nature and inherent non-equilibrium condition. Dynamical condensation in microcavi ty exciton-polaritons has been observed at much elevated temperatures in comparison to ultrocold atom condensates. Recently, we have investigated the behavior of exciton-polariton condensates in artificial trap and lattice geometries in zero-dimension, one-dimension (1D) and two-dimension (2D). Coherent $pi$-state with p-wave order in a 1D condensate array and d-orbital state in a 2D square lattice are observed. We anticipate that the preparation of high-orbital condensates can be further extended to probe dynamical quantum phase transition in a controlled manner as quantum emulation applications.

Solitons play a fundamental role in dynamics of nonlinear excitations. Here we explore the motion of solitons in one-dimensional uniform Bose-Einstein condensates subjected to a spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We demonstrate that the spin dynamics of soli tons is governed by a nonlinear Bloch equation. The spin dynamics influences the orbital motion of the solitons leading to the spin-orbit effects in the dynamics of the macroscopic quantum objects (mean-field solitons). The latter perform oscillations with a frequency determined by the SOC, Raman coupling, and intrinsic nonlinearity. These findings reveal unique features of solitons affected by the SOC, which is confirmed by analytical considerations and numerical simulations of the underlying Gross-Pitaevskii equations.
