Ultrafast electron delocalization induced by a fs laser pulse is a well-known process and is the initial step for important applications such as fragmentation of molecules or laser ablation in solids. It is well understood that an intense fs laser pulse can remove several electrons from an atom within its pulse duration. [1] However, the speed of electron localization out of an electron gas, the capture of an electron by ion, is unknown. Here, we demonstrate that electronic localization out of the conduction band can occur within only a few hundred femtoseconds. This ultrafast electron localization into 4f states has been directly quantified by transient x-ray absorption spectroscopy following photo-excitation of a Eu based correlated metal with a fs laser pulse. Our x-ray experiments show that the driving force for this process is either an ultrafast reduction of the energy of the 4f states, a change of their bandwidth or an increase of the hybridization between the 4f and the 3d states. The observed ultrafast electron localization process raises further basic questions for our understanding of electron correlations and their coupling to the lattice.

We establish that a doping-driven first-order metal-to-metal transition, from a pseudogap metal to Fermi Liquid, can occur in correlated quantum materials. Our result is based on the exact Dynamical Mean Field Theory solution of the Dimer Hubbard Mod el. This transition elucidates the origin of many exotic features in doped Mott materials, like the pseudogap in cuprates, incoherent bad metals, enhanced compressibility and orbital selective Mott transition. This phenomenon is suggestive to be at the roots of the many exotic phases appearing in the phase diagram of correlated materials.
Experimental results on the metal-insulator transition and related phenomena in strongly interacting two-dimensional electron systems are discussed. Special attention is given to recent results for the strongly enhanced spin susceptibility, effective mass, and thermopower in low-disordered silicon MOSFETs.
At the interface between two distinct materials desirable properties, such as superconductivity, can be greatly enhanced, or entirely new functionalities may emerge. Similar to in artificially engineered heterostructures, clean functional interfaces alternatively exist in electronically textured bulk materials. Electronic textures emerge spontaneously due to competing atomic-scale interactions, the control of which, would enable a top-down approach for designing tunable intrinsic heterostructures. This is particularly attractive for correlated electron materials, where spontaneous heterostructures strongly affect the interplay between charge and spin degrees of freedom. Here we report high-resolution neutron spectroscopy on the prototypical strongly-correlated metal CeRhIn5, revealing competition between magnetic frustration and easy-axis anisotropy -- a well-established mechanism for generating spontaneous superstructures. Because the observed easy-axis anisotropy is field-induced and anomalously large, it can be controlled efficiently with small magnetic fields. The resulting field-controlled magnetic superstructure is closely tied to the formation of superconducting and electronic nematic textures in CeRhIn5, suggesting that in-situ tunable heterostructures can be realized in correlated electron materials.
We study the effect of oxygen vacancies on the electronic structure of the model strongly correlated metal SrVO$_3$. By means of angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) synchrotron experiments, we investigate the systematic effect of the UV dose on the measured spectra. We observe the onset of a spurious dose-dependent prominent peak at an energy range were the lower Hubbard band has been previously reported in this compound, raising questions on its previous interpretation. By a careful analysis of the dose dependent effects we succeed in disentangling the contributions coming from the oxygen vacancy states and from the lower Hubbard band. We obtain the intrinsic ARPES spectrum for the zero-vacancy limit, where a clear signal of a lower Hubbard band remains. We support our study by means of state-of-the-art ab initio calculations that include correlation effects and the presence of oxygen vacancies. Our results underscore the relevance of potential spurious states affecting ARPES experiments in correlated metals, which are associated to the ubiquitous oxygen vacancies as extensively reported in the context of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the surface of insulating $d^0$ transition metal oxides.
The possibility of investigating the dynamics of solids on timescales faster than the thermalization of the internal degrees of freedom has disclosed novel non-equilibrium phenomena that have no counterpart at equilibrium. Transition metal oxides (TM Os) provide an interesting playground in which the correlations among the charges in the metal $d$-orbitals give rise to a wealth of intriguing electronic and thermodynamic properties involving the spin, charge, lattice and orbital orders. Furthermore, the physical properties of TMOs can be engineered at the atomic level, thus providing the platform to investigate the transport phenomena on timescales of the order of the intrinsic decoherence time of the charge excitations. Here, we review and discuss three paradigmatic examples of transient emerging properties that are expected to open new fields of research: i) the creation of non-thermal magnetic states in spin-orbit Mott insulators; ii) the possible exploitation of quantum paths for the transport and collection of charge excitations in TMO-based few-monolayers devices; iii) the transient wave-like behavior of the temperature field in strongly anisotropic TMOs.
