An Intrusion Detection System (IDS) aims to alert users of incoming attacks by deploying a detector that monitors network traffic continuously. As an effort to increase detection capabilities, a set of independent IDS detectors typically work collaboratively to build intelligence of holistic network representation, which is referred to as Collaborative Intrusion Detection System (CIDS). However, developing an effective CIDS, particularly for the IoT ecosystem raises several challenges. Recent trends and advances in blockchain technology, which provides assurance in distributed trust and secure immutable storage, may contribute towards the design of effective CIDS. In this poster abstract, we present our ongoing work on a decentralized CIDS for IoT, which is based on blockchain technology. We propose an architecture that provides accountable trust establishment, which promotes incentives and penalties, and scalable intrusion information storage by exchanging bloom filters. We are currently implementing a proof-of-concept of our modular architecture in a local test-bed and evaluate its effectiveness in detecting common attacks in IoT networks and the associated overhead.

Due to their rapid growth and deployment, the Internet of things (IoT) have become a central aspect of our daily lives. Unfortunately, IoT devices tend to have many vulnerabilities which can be exploited by an attacker. Unsupervised techniques, such as anomaly detection, can be used to secure these devices in a plug-and-protect manner. However, anomaly detection models must be trained for a long time in order to capture all benign behaviors. Furthermore, the anomaly detection model is vulnerable to adversarial attacks since, during the training phase, all observations are assumed to be benign. In this paper, we propose (1) a novel approach for anomaly detection and (2) a lightweight framework that utilizes the blockchain to ensemble an anomaly detection model in a distributed environment. Blockchain framework incrementally updates a trusted anomaly detection model via self-attestation and consensus among the IoT devices. We evaluate our method on a distributed IoT simulation platform, which consists of 48 Raspberry Pis. The simulation demonstrates how the approach can enhance the security of each device and the security of the network as a whole.
This paper considers the use of novel technologies for mitigating attacks that aim at compromising intrusion detection systems (IDSs). Solutions based on collaborative intrusion detection networks (CIDNs) could increase the resilience against such at tacks as they allow IDS nodes to gain knowledge from each other by sharing information. However, despite the vast research in this area, trust management issues still pose significant challenges and recent works investigate whether these could be addressed by relying on blockchain and related distributed ledger technologies. Towards that direction, the paper proposes the use of a trust-based blockchain in CIDNs, referred to as trust-chain, to protect the integrity of the information shared among the CIDN peers, enhance their accountability, and secure their collaboration by thwarting insider attacks. A consensus protocol is proposed for CIDNs, which is a combination of a proof-of-stake and proof-of-work protocols, to enable collaborative IDS nodes to maintain a reliable and tampered-resistant trust-chain.
Internet of Things (IoT) devices are becoming increasingly popular and are influencing many application domains such as healthcare and transportation. These devices are used for real-world applications such as sensor monitoring, real-time control. In this work, we look at differentially private (DP) neural network (NN) based network intrusion detection systems (NIDS) to detect intrusion attacks on networks of such IoT devices. Existing NN training solutions in this domain either ignore privacy considerations or assume that the privacy requirements are homogeneous across all users. We show that the performance of existing differentially private stochastic methods degrade for clients with non-identical data distributions when clients privacy requirements are heterogeneous. We define a cohort-based $(epsilon,delta)$-DP framework that models the more practical setting of IoT device cohorts with non-identical clients and heterogeneous privacy requirements. We propose two novel continual-learning based DP training methods that are designed to improve model performance in the aforementioned setting. To the best of our knowledge, ours is the first system that employs a continual learning-based approach to handle heterogeneity in client privacy requirements. We evaluate our approach on real datasets and show that our techniques outperform the baselines. We also show that our methods are robust to hyperparameter changes. Lastly, we show that one of our proposed methods can easily adapt to post-hoc relaxations of client privacy requirements.
Internet of Things (IoT) is a disruptive technology with applications across diverse domains such as transportation and logistics systems, smart grids, smart homes, connected vehicles, and smart cities. Alongside the growth of these infrastructures, the volume and variety of attacks on these infrastructures has increased highlighting the significance of distinct protection mechanisms. Intrusion detection is one of the distinguished protection mechanisms with notable recent efforts made to establish effective intrusion detection for IoT and IoV. However, unique characteristics of such infrastructures including battery power, bandwidth and processors overheads, and the network dynamics can influence the operation of an intrusion detection system. This paper presents a comprehensive study of existing intrusion detection systems for IoT systems including emerging systems such as Internet of Vehicles (IoV). The paper analyzes existing systems in three aspects: computational overhead, energy consumption and privacy implications. Based on a rigorous analysis of the existing intrusion detection approaches, the paper also identifies open challenges for an effective and collaborative design of intrusion detection system for resource-constrained IoT system in general and its applications such as IoV. These efforts are envisaged to highlight state of the art with respect to intrusion detection for IoT and open challenges requiring specific efforts to achieve efficient intrusion detection within these systems.
Heterogeneous and dynamic IoT environments require a lightweight, scalable, and trustworthy access control system for protection from unauthorized access and for automated detection of compromised nodes. Recent proposals in IoT access control systems have incorporated blockchain to overcome inherent issues in conventional access control schemes. However, the dynamic interaction of IoT networks remains uncaptured. Here, we develop a blockchain based Trust and Reputation System (TRS) for IoT access control, which progressively evaluates and calculates the trust and reputation score of each participating node to achieve a self-adaptive and trustworthy access control system. Trust and reputation are explicitly incorporated in the attribute-based access control policy, so that different nodes can be assigned to different access right levels, resulting in dynamic access control policies. We implement our proposed architecture in a private Ethereum blockchain comprised of a Docker container network. We benchmark our solution using various performance metrics to highlight its applicability for IoT contexts.
