We present an open-source program irvsp, to compute irreducible representations of electronic states for all 230 space groups with an interface to the Vienna ab-initio Simulation Package. This code is fed with plane-wave-based wavefunctions (e.g. WAVECAR) and space group operators (listed in OUTCAR), which are generated by the VASP package. This program computes the traces of matrix presentations and determines the corresponding irreducible representations for all energy bands and all the k-points in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone. It also works with spin-orbit coupling (SOC), i.e., for double groups. It is in particular useful to analyze energy bands, their connectivities, and band topology, after the establishment of the theory of topological quantum chemistry. Accordingly, the associated library - irrep_bcs.a - is developed, which can be easily linked to by other ab-initio packages. In addition, the program has been extended to orthogonal tight-binding (TB) Hamiltonians, e.g. electronic or phononic TB Hamiltonians. A sister program ir2tb is presented as well.

We report on the magnetic, resistive, and structural studies of perovskite La$_{1/3}$Sr$_{2/3}$CoO$_{3-delta}$. By using the relation of synthesis temperature and oxygen partial pressure to oxygen stoichiometry obtained from thermogravimetric analysi s, we have synthesized a series of samples with precisely controlled $delta=0.00-0.49$. These samples show three structural phases at $delta=0.00-0.15$, $approx0.25$, $approx0.5$, and two-phase behavior for other oxygen contents. The stoichiometric material with $delta=0.00$ is a cubic ferromagnetic metal with the Curie temperature $T_{rm C}=274$ K. The increase of $delta$ to 0.15 is followed by a linear decrease of $T_{rm C}$ to $approx$ 160 K and a metal-insulator transition near the boundary of the cubic structure range. Further increase of $delta$ results in formation of a tetragonal $2a_ptimes 2a_p times 4a_p$ phase for $deltaapprox 0.25$ and a brownmillerite phase for $deltaapprox0.5$. At low temperatures, these are weak ferromagnetic insulators (canted antiferromagnets) with magnetic transitions at $T_{rm m}approx230$ and 120 K, respectively. At higher temperatures, the $2a_ptimes 2a_p times 4a_p$ phase is $G$-type antiferromagnetic between 230 K and $approx$360 K. Low temperature magnetic properties of this system for $delta<1/3$ can be described in terms of a mixture of Co$^{3+}$ ions in the low-spin state and Co$^{4+}$ ions in the intermediate-spin state and a possible spin transition of Co$^{3+}$ to the intermediate-spin state above $T_{rm C}$. For $delta>1/3$, there appears to be a combination of Co$^{2+}$ and Co$^{3+}$ ions, both in the high-spin state with dominating antiferromagnetic interactions.
Bloch wavefunctions in solids form a representation of crystalline symmetries. Recent studies revealed that symmetry representations in band structure can be used to diagnose the topological properties of weakly interacting materials. In this work, w e introduce an open-source program qeirreps that computes the representation characters in a band structure based on the output file of Quantum ESPRESSO. Our program also calculates the Z4 index, i.e., the sum of inversion parities at all time-reversal invariant momenta, for materials with inversion symmetry. When combined with the symmetry indicator method, this program can be used to explore new topological materials.
We have developed a Mathematica program package SpaceGroupIrep which is a database and tool set for irreducible representations (IRs) of space group in BC convention, i.e. the convention used in the famous book The mathematical theory of symmetry in solids by C. J. Bradley & A. P. Cracknell. Using this package, elements of any space group, little group, Herring little group, or central extension of little co-group can be easily obtained. This package can give not only little-group (LG) IRs for any k-point but also space-group (SG) IRs for any k-stars in intuitive table form, and both single-valued and double-valued IRs are supported. This package can calculate the decomposition of the direct product of SG IRs for any two k-stars. This package can determine the LG IRs of Bloch states in energy bands in BC convention and this works for any input primitive cell thanks to its ability to convert any input cell to a cell in BC convention. This package can also provide the correspondence of k-points and LG IR labels between BCS (Bilbao Crystallographic Server) and BC conventions. In a word, the package SpaceGroupIrep is very useful for both study and research, e.g. for analyzing band topology or determining selection rules.
Recently, x-ray illumination, using synchrotron radiation, has been used to manipulate defects, stimulate self-organization and to probe their structure. Here we explore a method of defect-engineering low-dimensional systems using focused laboratory- scale X-ray sources. We demonstrate an irreversible change in the conducting properties of the 2-dimensional electron gas at the interface between the complex oxide materials LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 by X-ray irradiation. The electrical resistance is monitored during exposure as the irradiated regions are driven into a high resistance state. Our results suggest attention shall be paid on electronic structure modification in X-ray spectroscopic studies and highlight large-area defect manipulation and direct device patterning as possible new fields of application for focused laboratory X-ray sources.
The spectacular metal-to-insulator transition of V2O3 can be progressively suppressed in thin film samples. Evidence for phase separation was observed using microbridges as a mesoscopic probe of transport properties where the same film possesses doma ins that exhibit a metal-to-insulator transition with clear first order features or remain metallic down to low temperatures. A simple model consisting of two parallel resistors can be used to quantify a phase coexistence scenario explaining the measured macroscopic transport properties. The interaction between film and substrate is the most plausible candidate to explain this extended phase coexistence as shown by a correlation between the transport properties and the structural data.
