High-throughput density functional calculations are used to investigate the effect of interstitial B, C and N atoms on 21 alloys reported to crystallize in the cubic Cu$_3$Au structure. It is shown that the interstitials can have a significant impact on the magneto-crystalline anisotropy energy (MAE), the thermodynamic stability and the magnetic ground state structure, making these alloys interesting for hard magnetic, magnetocaloric and other applications. For 29 alloy/interstitial combinations the formation of stable alloys with interstitial concentrations above 5% is expected. In Ni$_3$Mn interstitial N induces a tetragonal distortion with substantial uniaxial MAE for realistic N concentrations. Mn$_3X$N$_x$ ($X$=Rh, Ir, Pt and Sb) are identified as alloys with strong magneto-crystalline anisotropy. For Mn$_3$Ir we find a strong enhancement of the MAE upon N alloying in the most stable collinear ferrimagnetic state as well as in the non-collinear magnetic ground state. Mn$_3$Ir and Mn$_3$IrN show also interesting topological transport properties. The effect of N concentration and strain on the magnetic properties are discussed. Further, the huge impact of N on the MAE of Mn$_3$Ir and a possible impact of interstitial N on amorphous Mn$_3$Ir, a material that is indispensable in todays data storage devices, are discussed at hand of the electronic structure. For Mn$_3$Sb, non-collinear, ferrimagnetic and ferromagnetic states are very close in energy, making this material potentially interesting for magnetocaloric applications. For the investigated Mn alloys and competing phases, the determination of the magnetic ground state is essential for a reliable prediction of the phase stability.

The crystal structures, martensitic structural transitions and magnetic properties of MnCo1-xFexSi (0 <= x <= 0.50) alloys were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), x-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and magnetic measurements. In high-temp erature paramagnetic state, the alloys undergo a martensitic structural transitions from the Ni2In-type hexagonal parent phase to the TiNiSi-type orthorhombic martensite. Both the martensitic transition temperature (TM) and Curie temperatures of martensite (T_C^M) decrease with increasing Fe content. The introduced Fe atoms establish ferromagnetic (FM) coupling between Fe-Mn atoms and destroy the double spiral antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling in MnCoSi compound, resulting in a magnetic change in the martensite phase from a spiral AFM state to a FM state. For the alloys with x = 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20, a metamagnetic transition was observed in between the two magnetic states. A magnetostructural phase diagram of MnCo1-xFexSi (0 <= x <= 0.50) alloys was proposed.
The effects of Cu-doping on the structural, magnetic, and transport properties of La0.7Sr0.3Mn1-xCuxO3 (0 < x < 0.20) have been studied using neutron diffraction, magnetization and magnetoresistance (MR) measurements. All samples show the rhombohedra l structure with the R3c space-group from 10K to room temperature (RT). Neutron diffraction data suggest that some of the Cu ions have a Cu3+ state in these compounds. The substitution of Mn by Cu affects the Mn-O bond length and Mn-O-Mn bond angle resulting from the minimization of the distortion of the MnO6 octahedron. Resistivity measurements show that a metal to insulator transition occurs for the x more than 0.15 samples. The x = 0.15 sample shows the highest MR(_80%), which might result from the co-existence of Cu3+/Cu2+ and the dilution effect of Cu-doping on the double exchange interaction.
We present a systematic study of core-shell Au/Fe_3O_4 nanoparticles produced by thermal decomposition under mild conditions. The morphology and crystal structure of the nanoparticles revealed the presence of Au core of <d> = (6.9pm 1.0) nm surrounde d by Fe_3O_4 shell with a thickness of ~3.5 nm, epitaxially grown onto the Au core surface. The Au/Fe_3O_4 core-shell structure was demonstrated by high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy analysis. The magnetite shell grown on top of the Au nanoparticle displayed a thermal blocking state at temperatures below T_B = 59 K and a relaxed state well above T_B. Remarkably, an exchange bias effect was observed when cooling down the samples below room temperature under an external magnetic field. Moreover, the exchange bias field (H_{EX}) started to appear at T~40 K and its value increased by decreasing the temperature. This effect has been assigned to the interaction of spins located in the magnetically disordered regions (in the inner and outer surface of the Fe_3O_4 shell) and spins located in the ordered region of the Fe_3O_4 shell.
We study the electronic and structural properties of substitutional impurities of graphenelike nanoporous materials C$_2$N, $tg$-, and $hg$-C$_3$N$_4$ by means of density functional theory calculations. We consider four types of impurities; boron sub stitution on carbon sites (B(C)), carbon substitution on nitrogen sites (C(N)), nitrogen substitution on carbon sites (N(C)), and sulfur substitution on nitrogen sites (S(N)). From cohesive energy calculations, we find that the C(N) and B(C) substitutions are the most energetically favorable and induce small bond modifications in the vicinity of the impurity, while the S(N) induces strong lattice distortions. Though all of the studied impurities induce defect levels inside the band gap of these materials, their electronic properties are poles apart depending on the behavior of the impurity as an acceptor or a donor. It is also observed that acceptor (donor) wavefunctions are composed only of $sigma$ ($pi$) orbitals from the impurity itself and/or neighboring sites. Consequently, acceptor wavefunctions are directed towards the pores and donor wavefunctions are more extended throughout the neighboring atoms, a property that could further be explored to modify the interaction between these materials and adsorbates. Moreover, impurity properties display a strong site sensitivity and ground state binding energies ranging from $0.03$ to $1.13$ eV, thus offering an interesting route for tuning the optical properties of these materials. Finally, spin-polarized calculations reveal that all impurity configurations have a magnetic ground state that rises from the spin splitting of the impurity levels. In a few configurations, more than one impurity level can be found inside the gap and two of them could potentially be explored as two-level systems for single-photon emission, following similar proposals recently made on defect complexes on TMDCs.
Precious metal alloys enables new possibilities to tailor materials for specific optical functions. Here we present a systematic study of the effects of a nanoscale alloying on the permittivity of Au-Ag-Cu metals at 38 different atomic mixing ratios. The permittivity was measured and analyzed numerically by applying the Drude model. X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed the face centered cubic lattice of the alloys. Both, optical spectra and XRD results point towards an equivalent composition-dependent electron scattering behavior. Correlation between the fundamental structural parameters of alloys and the resulting optical properties is elucidated. Plasmonic properties of the Au-Ag-Cu alloy nanoparticles were investigated by numerical simulations. Guidelines for designing plasmonic response of nano- structures and their patterns are presented from the material science perspective.
