The layered MnBi2nTe3n+1 family represents the first intrinsic antiferromagnetic topological insulator (AFM TI, protected by a combination symmetry ) ever discovered, providing an ideal platform to explore novel physics such as quantum anomalous Hall effect at elevated temperature and axion electrodynamics. Recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments on this family have revealed that all terminations exhibit (nearly) gapless topological surface states (TSSs) within the AFM state, violating the definition of the AFM TI, as the surfaces being studied should be -breaking and opening a gap. Here we explain this curious paradox using a surface-bulk band hybridization picture. Combining ARPES and first-principles calculations, we prove that only an apparent gap is opened by hybridization between TSSs and bulk bands. The observed (nearly) gapless features are consistently reproduced by tight-binding simulations where TSSs are coupled to a Rashba-split bulk band. The Dirac-cone-like spectral features are actually of bulk origin, thus not sensitive to the-breaking at the AFM surfaces. This picture explains the (nearly) gapless behaviour found in both Bi2Te3- and MnBi2Te4-terminated surfaces and is applicable to all terminations of MnBi2nTe3n+1 family. Our findings highlight the role of band hybridization, superior to magnetism in this case, in shaping the general surface band structure in magnetic topological materials for the first time.

We construct the symmetric-gapped surface states of a fractional topological insulator with electromagnetic $theta$-angle $theta_{em} = frac{pi}{3}$ and a discrete $mathbb{Z}_3$ gauge field. They are the proper generalizations of the T-pfaffian state and pfaffian/anti-semion state and feature an extended periodicity compared with their of integer topological band insulators counterparts. We demonstrate that the surface states have the correct anomalies associated with time-reversal symmetry and charge conservation.
Since the discovery of the quantum anomalous Hall effect in the magnetically doped topological insulators (MTI) Cr:(Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$ and V:(Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$, the search for the exchange coupling mechanisms underlying the onset of ferromagnetism has b een a central issue, and a variety of different scenarios have been put forward. By combining resonant photoemission, X-ray magnetic dichroism and multiplet ligand field theory, we determine the local electronic and magnetic configurations of V and Cr impurities in (Bi,Sb)$_2$Te$_3$. While strong pd hybridisation is found for both dopant types, their 3d densities of states show pronounced differences. State-of-the-art first-principles calculations show how these impurity states mediate characteristic short-range pd exchange interactions, whose strength sensitively varies with the position of the 3d states relative to the Fermi level. Measurements on films with varying host stoichiometry support this trend. Our results establish the essential role of impurity-state mediated exchange interactions in the magnetism of MTI.
We theoretically study the magnetoresistance (MR) of two-dimensional massless Dirac electrons as found on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators (3D TIs) that is capped by a ferromagnetic insulator (FI). We calculate charge and spin transport by Kubo and Boltzmann theories, taking into account the ladder-vertex correction and the in-scattering due to normal and magnetic disorder. The induced exchange splitting is found to generate an electric conductivity that depends on the magnetization orientation, but its form is very different from both the anisotropic and spin Hall MR. The in-plane MR vanishes identically for non-magnetic disorder, while out-of-plane magnetizations cause a large MR ratio. On the other hand, we do find an in-plane MR and planar Hall effect in the presence of magnetic disorder aligned with the FI magnetization. Our results may help understand recent transport measurements on TI|FI systems.
The surface states of 3D topological insulators can exhibit Fermi surfaces of arbitrary area when the chemical potential is tuned away from the Dirac points. We focus on topological Kondo insulators and show that the surface states can acquire a fini te Fermi surface even when the chemical potential is pinned to the Dirac point energy. We illustrate how this can occur when the crystal symmetry is lowered from cubic to tetragonal in a minimal two-orbital model. We label such surface modes as `shadow surface states. We also show that for certain bulk hybridization the Fermi surface of the shadow states can become comparable to the extremal area of the unhybridized bulk bands. The `large Fermi surface of the shadow states is expected to lead to large-frequency quantum oscillations in the presence of an applied magnetic field. Consequently, shadow surface states provide an alternative to mechanisms involving bulk Landau-quantized levels or surface Kondo breakdown for anomalous magnetic quantum oscillations in topological Kondo insulators with tetragonal crystal symmetry.
We demonstrate that a combination of disorder and interactions in a two-dimensional bulk topological insulator can generically drive its helical edge insulating. We establish this within the framework of helical Luttinger liquid theory and exact Emer y-Luther mapping. The gapless glassy edge state spontaneously breaks time-reversal symmetry in a `spin glass fashion, and may be viewed as a localized state of solitons which carry half integer charge. Such a qualitatively distinct edge state provides a simple explanation for heretofore puzzling experimental observations. This phase exhibits a striking non-monotonicity, with the edge growing less localized in both the weak and strong disorder limits.
