The problem of quarkonium production in heavy ion collisions presents a set of unique theoretical challenges -- from the relevant production mechanism of $J/psi$ and $Upsilon$ to the relative significance of distinct cold and hot nuclear matter effects in the observed attenuation of quarkonia. Inthese proceedings we summarize recent work on the generalization of non-relativistic Quantum Chromodynamics (NRQCD) to include off-shell gluon (Glauber/Coulomb) interactions in strongly interacting matter. This new effective theory provides for the first time a universal microscopic description of the in-medium interaction of heavy quarkonia, consistently applicable to a range of phases such as cold nuclear matter, dense hadron gas, and quark-gluon plasma. It is an important step forward in understanding the common trends in proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus data on quarkonium suppression. We derive explicitly the leading and sub-leading interaction terms in the Lagrangian and show the connection of the leading result to existing phenomenology.

We consider the Quasilocal Quark Model of NJL type (QNJLM) as an effective theory of non-perturbative QCD including scalar (S), pseudoscalar (P), vector (V) and axial-vector (A) four-fermion interaction with derivatives. In the presence of a strong a ttraction in the scalar channel the chiral symmetry is spontaneously broken and as a consequence the composite meson states are generated in all channels. With the help of Operator Product Expansion the appropriate set of Chiral Symmetry Restoration (CSR) Sum Rules in these channels are imposed as matching conditions to QCD at intermediate energies. The mass spectrum and some decay constants for ground and excited meson states are calculated.
We construct the effective potential for a QCD-like theory using the auxiliary field method. The chiral phase transition exhibited by the model at finite temperature and the quark chemical potential is studied from the viewpoint of the shape change o f the potential near the critical point. We further generalize the effective potential so as to have quark number and scalar quark densities as independent variables near the tri-critical point.
We present an effective field theory of the $Delta$-resonance as an interacting Weinbergs $(3/2,0)oplus (0,3/2)$ field in the multi-spinor formalism. We derive its interactions with nucleons $N$, pions $pi$ and photons $gamma$, and compute the $Delta $-resonance cross-sections in pion-nucleon scattering and pion photo-production. The theory contains only the physical spin-3/2 degrees of freedom. Thus, it is intrinsically consistent at the Hamiltonian level and, unlike the commonly used Rarita-Schwinger framework, does not require any additional ad hoc manipulation of couplings or propagators. The symmetries of hadronic physics select a unique operator for each coupling $NpiDelta$ and $gammapiDelta$. The proposed framework can be extended to also describe other higher-spin hadronic resonances.
We develop an effective field theory of a generic massive particle of any spin and, as an example, apply this to study higher-spin dark matter (DM). Our formalism does not introduce unphysical degrees of freedom, thus avoiding the potential inconsist encies that may appear in other field-theoretical descriptions of higher spin. Being a useful reformulation of the Weinbergs original idea, the proposed effective field theory allows for consistent computations of physical observables for general-spin particles, although it does not admit a Lagrangian description. As a specific realization, we explore the phenomenology of a general-spin singlet with $mathbb{Z}_2$-symmetric Higgs portal couplings, a setup which automatically arises for high spin, and show that higher spin particles with masses above $O(10),mathrm{TeV}$ can be viable thermally-produced DM candidates. Most importantly, if the general-spin DM has purely parity-odd couplings, it naturally avoids all DM direct detection bounds, in which case its mass can lie below the electroweak scale. Our formalism reproduces the existing results for low-spin DM, and allows one to develop consistent higher-spin particle physics phenomenology for high- and low-energy experiments and cosmology.

In this talk I describe recent progress in investigating the high energy limit of perturbative QCD. I review some of the steps that have been done in the direction of constructing an effective field theory for this limit. I describe some of its build ing blocks and explain why we expect the effective theory to be a 2+1-dimensional conformal field theory.
