A lesser-known but powerful application of parabolic equation methods is to the target scattering problem. In this paper, we use noncanonically shaped objects to establish the limits of applicability of the traditional approach, and introduce wide-angle and multiple-scattering approaches to allow accurate treatment of concave scatterers. The PE calculations are benchmarked against finite-element results, with good agreement obtained for convex scatterers in the traditional approach, and for concave scatterers with our modified approach. We demonstrate that the PE-based method is significantly more computationally efficient than the finite-element method at higher frequencies where objects are several or more wavelengths long.

Several methods for handling sloping fluid-solid interfaces with the elastic parabolic equation are tested. A single-scattering approach that is modified for the fluid-solid case is accurate for some problems but breaks down when the contrast across the interface is sufficiently large and when there is a Scholte wave. An approximate condition for conserving energy breaks down when a Scholte wave propagates along a sloping interface but otherwise performs well for a large class of problems involving gradual slopes, a wide range of sediment parameters, and ice cover. An approach based on treating part of the fluid layer as a solid with low shear speed handles Scholte waves and a wide range of sediment parameters accurately, but this approach needs further development. The variable rotated parabolic equation is not effective for problems involving frequent or continuous changes in slope, but it provides a high level of accuracy for most of the test cases, which have regions of constant slope. Approaches based on a coordinate mapping and on using a film of solid material with low shear speed on the rises of the stair steps that approximate a sloping interface are also tested and found to produce accurate results for some cases.
In this work the Lippmann-Schwinger equation is used to model seismic waves in strongly scattering acoustic media. We consider the Helmholtz equation, which is the scalar wave equation in the frequency domain with constant density and variable veloci ty, and transform it to an integral equation of the Lippmann-Schwinger type. To directly solve the discretized problem with matrix inversion is time-consuming, therefore we use iterative methods. The Born series is a well-known scattering series which gives the solution with relatively small cost, but it has limited use as it only converges for small scattering potentials. There exist other scattering series with preconditioners that have been shown to converge for any contrast, but the methods might require many iterations for models with high contrast. Here we develop new preconditioners based on randomized matrix approximations and hierarchical matrices which can make the scattering series converge for any contrast with a low number of iterations. We describe two different preconditioners; one is best for lower frequencies and the other for higher frequencies. We use the fast Fourier transform both in the construction of the preconditioners and in the iterative solution, and this makes the methods efficient. The performance of the methods are illustrated by numerical experiments on two 2D models.
The interior resonance problem of time domain integral equations (TDIEs) formulated to analyze acoustic field interactions on penetrable objects is investigated. Two types of TDIEs are considered: The first equation, which is termed the time domain p otential integral equation (TDPIE) (in unknowns velocity potential and its normal derivative), suffers from the interior resonance problem, i.e., its solution is replete with spurious modes that are excited at the resonance frequencies of the acoustic cavity in the shape of the scatterer. Numerical experiments demonstrate that, unlike the frequency-domain integral equations, the amplitude of these modes in the time domain could be suppressed to a level that does not significantly affect the solution. The second equation is obtained by linearly combining TDPIE with its normal derivative. Weights of the combination are carefully selected to enable the numerical computation of the singular integrals. The solution of this equation, which is termed the time domain combined potential integral equation (TDCPIE), does not involve any spurious interior resonance modes.

The global optimum for valence population transfer in the NO$_2$ molecule driven by impulsive x-ray stimulated Raman scattering of one-femtosecond x-ray pulses tuned below the Oxygen K-edge is determined with the Multiconfiguration Time-Dependent Har tree-Fock method, a fully-correlated first-principles treatment that allows for the ionization of every electron in the molecule. Final valence state populations computed in the fixed-nuclei, nonrelativistic approximation are reported as a function of central wavelength and intensity. The convergence of the calculations with respect to their adjustable parameters is fully tested. Fixing the 1fs duration but varying the central frequency and intensity of the pulse, without chirp, orientation-averaged maximum population transfer of 0.7% to the valence B$_1$ state is obtained at an intensity of 3.16$times$10$^{17}$ W cm$^{-2}$, with the central frequency substantially 6eV red-detuned from the 2nd order optimum; 2.39% is obtained at one specific orientation. The behavior near the global optimum, below the Oxygen K-edge, is consistent with the mechanism of nonresonant Raman transitions driven by the near-edge fine structure oscillator strength.
We show that there exists an exact solution for a lossless and reciprocal periodic surface impedance which ensures full conversion of a single-mode surface wave propagating along the impedance boundary to a single plane wave propagating along a desir ed direction in free space above the boundary. In contrast to known realizations of leaky-wave antennas, the optimal surface reactance modulation which is found here ensures the absence of evanescent higher-order modes of the Floquet wave expansion of fields near the radiating surface. Thus, all the energy carried by the surface wave is used for launching the single inhomogeneous plane wave into space, without accumulation of reactive energy in higher-order modes. The results of the study are expected to be useful for creation of leaky-wave antennas with the ultimate efficiency, and, moreover, can potentially lead to novel applications, from microwaves to nanophotonics.
