Wildfire has had increasing impacts on society as the climate changes and the wildland urban interface grows. As such, there is a demand for innovative solutions to help manage fire. Managing wildfire can include proactive fire management such as prescribed burning within constrained areas or advancements for reactive fire management (e.g., fire suppression). Because of the growing societal impact, the JPL BlueSky program sought to assess the current state of fire management and technology and determine areas with high return on investment. To accomplish this, we met with the national interagency Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) Advisory Group (UASAG) and with leading technology transfer experts for fire science and management applications. We provide an overview of the current state as well as an analysis of the impact, maturity and feasibility of integrating different technologies that can be developed by JPL. Based on the findings, the highest return on investment technologies for fire management are first to develop single micro-aerial vehicle (MAV) autonomy, autonomous sensing over fire, and the associated data and information system for active fire local environment mapping. Once this is completed for a single MAV, expanding the work to include many in a swarm would require further investment of distributed MAV autonomy and MAV swarm mechanics, but could greatly expand the breadth of application over large fires. Important to investing in these technologies will be in developing collaborations with the key influencers and champions for using UAS technology in fire management.

As unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) become more accessible with a growing range of applications, the potential risk of UAV disruption increases. Recent development in deep learning allows vision-based counter-UAV systems to detect and track UAVs with a single camera. However, the coverage of a single camera is limited, necessitating the need for multicamera configurations to match UAVs across cameras - a problem known as re-identification (reID). While there has been extensive research on person and vehicle reID to match objects across time and viewpoints, to the best of our knowledge, there has been no research in UAV reID. UAVs are challenging to re-identify: they are much smaller than pedestrians and vehicles and they are often detected in the air so appear at a greater range of angles. Because no UAV data sets currently use multiple cameras, we propose the first new UAV re-identification data set, UAV-reID, that facilitates the development of machine learning solutions in this emerging area. UAV-reID has two settings: Temporally-Near to evaluate performance across views to assist tracking frameworks, and Big-to-Small to evaluate reID performance across scale and to allow early reID when UAVs are detected from a long distance. We conduct a benchmark study by extensively evaluating different reID backbones and loss functions. We demonstrate that with the right setup, deep networks are powerful enough to learn good representations for UAVs, achieving 81.9% mAP on the Temporally-Near setting and 46.5% on the challenging Big-to-Small setting. Furthermore, we find that vision transformers are the most robust to extreme variance of scale.
The Internet of Things (IoT) will soon be omnipresent and billions of sensors and actuators will support our industries and well-being. IoT devices are embedded systems that are connected using wireless technology for most of the cases. The availabil ity of the wireless network serving the IoT, the privacy, integrity, and trustworthiness of the data are of critical importance, since IoT will drive businesses and personal decisions. This paper proposes a new approach in the wireless security domain that leverages advanced wireless technology and the emergence of the unmanned aerial system or vehicle (UAS or UAV). We consider the problem of eavesdropping and analyze how UAVs can aid in reducing, or overcoming this threat in the mobile IoT context. The results show that huge improvements in terms of channel secrecy rate can be achieved when UAVs assist base stations for relaying the information to the desired IoT nodes. Our approach is technology agnostic and can be expanded to address other communications security aspects.
In the next few years, smart farming will reach each and every nook of the world. The prospects of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for smart farming are immense. However, the cost and the ease in controlling UAVs for smart farming might play an important role for motivating farmers to use UAVs in farming. Mostly, UAVs are controlled by remote controllers using radio waves. There are several technologies such as WiFi or ZigBee that are also used for controlling UAVs. However, Smart Bluetooth (also referred to as Bluetooth Low Energy) is a wireless technology used to transfer data over short distances. Bluetooth smart is cheaper than other technologies and has the advantage of being available on every smart phone. Farmers can use any smart phone to operate their respective UAVs along with Bluetooth Smart enabled agricultural sensors in the future. However, certain requirements and challenges need to be addressed before UAVs can be operated for smart agriculture-related applications. Hence, in this article, an attempt has been made to explore the types of sensors suitable for smart farming, potential requirements and challenges for operating UAVs in smart agriculture. We have also identified the future applications of using UAVs in smart farming.
Advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) gives a great opportunity to develop an autonomous devices. The contribution of this work is an improved convolutional neural network (CNN) model and its implementation for the detection of road cracks, po tholes, and yellow lane in the road. The purpose of yellow lane detection and tracking is to realize autonomous navigation of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) by following yellow lane while detecting and reporting the road cracks and potholes to the server through WIFI or 5G medium. The fabrication of own data set is a hectic and time-consuming task. The data set is created, labeled and trained using default and an improved model. The performance of both these models is benchmarked with respect to accuracy, mean average precision (mAP) and detection time. In the testing phase, it was observed that the performance of the improved model is better in respect of accuracy and mAP. The improved model is implemented in UAV using the robot operating system for the autonomous detection of potholes and cracks in roads via UAV front camera vision in real-time.

Over the past decade, sky surveys such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey have proven the power of large data sets for answering fundamental astrophysical questions. This observational progress, based on a synergy of advances in telescope construction, detectors, and information technology, has had a dramatic impact on nearly all fields of astronomy, and areas of fundamental physics. The next-generation instruments, and the surveys that will be made with them, will maintain this revolutionary progress. The hardware and computational technical challenges and the exciting science opportunities are attracting scientists and engineers from astronomy, optics, low-light-level detectors, high-energy physics, statistics, and computer science. The history of astronomy has taught us repeatedly that there are surprises whenever we view the sky in a new way. This will be particularly true of discoveries emerging from a new generation of sky surveys. Imaging data from large ground-based active optics telescopes with sufficient etendue can address many scientific missions simultaneously. These new investigations will rely on the statistical precision obtainable with billions of objects. For the first time, the full sky will be surveyed deep and fast, opening a new window on a universe of faint moving and distant exploding objects as well as unraveling the mystery of dark energy.
