Dynamic contrast enhanced computed tomography (CT) is an imaging technique that provides critical information on the relationship of vascular structure and dynamics in the context of underlying anatomy. A key challenge for image processing with contrast enhanced CT is that phase discrepancies are latent in different tissues due to contrast protocols, vascular dynamics, and metabolism variance. Previous studies with deep learning frameworks have been proposed for classifying contrast enhancement with networks inspired by computer vision. Here, we revisit the challenge in the context of whole abdomen contrast enhanced CTs. To capture and compensate for the complex contrast changes, we propose a novel discriminator in the form of a multi-domain disentangled representation learning network. The goal of this network is to learn an intermediate representation that separates contrast enhancement from anatomy and enables classification of images with varying contrast time. Briefly, our unpaired contrast disentangling GAN(CD-GAN) Discriminator follows the ResNet architecture to classify a CT scan from different enhancement phases. To evaluate the approach, we trained the enhancement phase classifier on 21060 slices from two clinical cohorts of 230 subjects. Testing was performed on 9100 slices from 30 independent subjects who had been imaged with CT scans from all contrast phases. Performance was quantified in terms of the multi-class normalized confusion matrix. The proposed network significantly improved correspondence over baseline UNet, ResNet50 and StarGAN performance of accuracy scores 0.54. 0.55, 0.62 and 0.91, respectively. The proposed discriminator from the disentangled network presents a promising technique that may allow deeper modeling of dynamic imaging against patient specific anatomies.

In this work, we aim to learn an unpaired image enhancement model, which can enrich low-quality images with the characteristics of high-quality images provided by users. We propose a quality attention generative adversarial network (QAGAN) trained on unpaired data based on the bidirectional Generative Adversarial Network (GAN) embedded with a quality attention module (QAM). The key novelty of the proposed QAGAN lies in the injected QAM for the generator such that it learns domain-relevant quality attention directly from the two domains. More specifically, the proposed QAM allows the generator to effectively select semantic-related characteristics from the spatial-wise and adaptively incorporate style-related attributes from the channel-wise, respectively. Therefore, in our proposed QAGAN, not only discriminators but also the generator can directly access both domains which significantly facilitates the generator to learn the mapping function. Extensive experimental results show that, compared with the state-of-the-art methods based on unpaired learning, our proposed method achieves better performance in both objective and subjective evaluations.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an important medical imaging modality, but its acquisition speed is quite slow due to the physiological limitations. Recently, super-resolution methods have shown excellent performance in accelerating MRI. In some circumstances, it is difficult to obtain high-resolution images even with prolonged scan time. Therefore, we proposed a novel super-resolution method that uses a generative adversarial network (GAN) with cyclic loss and attention mechanism to generate high-resolution MR images from low-resolution MR images by a factor of 2. We implemented our model on pelvic images from healthy subjects as training and validation data, while those data from patients were used for testing. The MR dataset was obtained using different imaging sequences, including T2, T2W SPAIR, and mDIXON-W. Four methods, i.e., BICUBIC, SRCNN, SRGAN, and EDSR were used for comparison. Structural similarity, peak signal to noise ratio, root mean square error, and variance inflation factor were used as calculation indicators to evaluate the performances of the proposed method. Various experimental results showed that our method can better restore the details of the high-resolution MR image as compared to the other methods. In addition, the reconstructed high-resolution MR image can provide better lesion textures in the tumor patients, which is promising to be used in clinical diagnosis.
The paper proposes a method to effectively fuse multi-exposure inputs and generates high-quality high dynamic range (HDR) images with unpaired datasets. Deep learning-based HDR image generation methods rely heavily on paired datasets. The ground trut h provides information for the network getting HDR images without ghosting. Datasets without ground truth are hard to apply to train deep neural networks. Recently, Generative Adversarial Networks (GAN) have demonstrated their potentials of translating images from source domain X to target domain Y in the absence of paired examples. In this paper, we propose a GAN-based network for solving such problems while generating enjoyable HDR results, named UPHDR-GAN. The proposed method relaxes the constraint of paired dataset and learns the mapping from LDR domain to HDR domain. Although the pair data are missing, UPHDR-GAN can properly handle the ghosting artifacts caused by moving objects or misalignments with the help of modified GAN loss, improved discriminator network and useful initialization phase. The proposed method preserves the details of important regions and improves the total image perceptual quality. Qualitative and quantitative comparisons against other methods demonstrated the superiority of our method.
In this paper, we address the hyperspectral image (HSI) classification task with a generative adversarial network and conditional random field (GAN-CRF) -based framework, which integrates a semi-supervised deep learning and a probabilistic graphical model, and make three contributions. First, we design four types of convolutional and transposed convolutional layers that consider the characteristics of HSIs to help with extracting discriminative features from limited numbers of labeled HSI samples. Second, we construct semi-supervised GANs to alleviate the shortage of training samples by adding labels to them and implicitly reconstructing real HSI data distribution through adversarial training. Third, we build dense conditional random fields (CRFs) on top of the random variables that are initialized to the softmax predictions of the trained GANs and are conditioned on HSIs to refine classification maps. This semi-supervised framework leverages the merits of discriminative and generative models through a game-theoretical approach. Moreover, even though we used very small numbers of labeled training HSI samples from the two most challenging and extensively studied datasets, the experimental results demonstrated that spectral-spatial GAN-CRF (SS-GAN-CRF) models achieved top-ranking accuracy for semi-supervised HSI classification.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is one of the best medical imaging modalities as it offers excellent spatial resolution and soft-tissue contrast. But, the usage of MRI is limited by its slow acquisition time, which makes it expensive and causes pati ent discomfort. In order to accelerate the acquisition, multiple deep learning networks have been proposed. Recently, Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) have shown promising results in MRI reconstruction. The drawback with the proposed GAN based methods is it does not incorporate the prior information about the end goal which could help in better reconstruction. For instance, in the case of cardiac MRI, the physician would be interested in the heart region which is of diagnostic relevance while excluding the peripheral regions. In this work, we show that incorporating prior information about a region of interest in the model would offer better performance. Thereby, we propose a novel GAN based architecture, Reconstruction Global-Local GAN (Recon-GLGAN) for MRI reconstruction. The proposed model contains a generator and a context discriminator which incorporates global and local contextual information from images. Our model offers significant performance improvement over the baseline models. Our experiments show that the concept of a context discriminator can be extended to existing GAN based reconstruction models to offer better performance. We also demonstrate that the reconstructions from the proposed method give segmentation results similar to fully sampled images.
