The paper reports on the dynamics of a 3-dimensional dusty plasma in a strong magnetic field. An electrostatic potential well created by a conducting or non-conducting ring in the rf discharge confines the charged dust particles. In the absence of the magnetic field, dust grains exhibit a thermal motion about their equilibrium position. As the magnetic field crosses a threshold value (B $>$ 0.02 T), the edge particles start to rotate and form a vortex in the vertical plane. At the same time, the central region particles either exhibit thermal motion or $vec{E} times vec{B}$ motion in the horizontal plane. At B $>$ 0.15 T, the central region dust grains start to rotate in the opposite direction resulting in a pair of counter-rotating vortices in the vertical plane. The characteristics of the vortex pair change with increasing the strength of the magnetic field (B $sim$ 0.8 T). At B $>$ 0.8 T, dust grains exhibit very complex motion in the rotating torus. The angular frequency variation of rotating particles indicates a differential or sheared dust rotation in a vortex. The angular frequency increases with increasing the magnetic field from 0.05 T to 0.8 T. The ion drag force and dust charge gradient along with the E-field are considered as possible energy sources for driving the edge vortex flow and central region vortex motion, respectively. The directions of rotation also confirm the different energy sources responsible for the vortex motion.

The collective dynamics of annulus dusty plasma formed between a co-centric conducting (non-conducting) disk and ring configuration is studied in a strongly magnetized radio-frequency (rf) discharge. A superconducting electromagnet is used to introdu ce a homogeneous magnetic field to the dusty plasma medium. In absence of the magnetic field, dust grains exhibit thermal motion around their equilibrium position. The dust grains start to rotate in anticlockwise direction with increasing magnetic field (B $>$ 0.02 T), and the constant value of the angular frequency at various strengths of magnetic field confirms the rigid body rotation. The angular frequency of dust grains linearly increases up to a threshold magnetic field (B $>$ 0.6 T) and after that its value remains nearly constant in a certain range of magnetic field. Further increase in magnetic field (B $>$ 1 T) lowers the angular frequency. Low value of angular frequency is expected by reducing the width of annulus dusty plasma or the input rf power. The azimuthal ion drag force due to the magnetic field is assumed to be the energy source which drives the rotational motion. The resultant radial electric field in the presence of magnetic field determines the direction of rotation. The variation of floating (plasma) potential across the annular region at given magnetic field explains the rotational properties of the annulus dusty plasma in the presence of magnetic field.

We give theoretical analyses of the Magneto-Rayleigh-Taylor instability driven by a rotating magnetic field. Both slab and liner configurations with finite thicknesses are dealt with in the WKB and the non-WKB approximations. Results show that instab ilities for all modes (combinations of wave vectors) are alleviated. We further discuss the potential application of the alternant/nested configurations of a theta and a Z pinch to the Theta-Z Liner Inertia Fusion (Theta-Z-LIF) concept.
Small objects floating on a fluid have a tendency to aggregate due to capillary forces. This effect has been used, with the help of a magnetic induction field, to assemble submillimeter metallic spheres into a variety of structures, whose shape and s ize can be tuned. Under time-varying fields, these assemblies can propel themselves due to a breaking of time reversal symmetry in their adopted shapes. In this article, we study the influence of an in-plane rotation of the magnetic field on these structures. Various rotational modes have been observed with different underlying mechanisms. The magnetic properties of the particles cause them to rotate individually. Dipole-dipole interactions in the assembly can cause the whole structure to align with the field. Finally, non-reciprocal deformations can power the rotation of the assembly. Symmetry plays an important role in the dynamics, as well as the frequency and amplitude of the applied field. Understanding the interplay of these effects is essential, both to explain previous observations and to develop new functions for these assemblies.
Pinned solitons are a special class of nonlinear solutions created by a supersonically moving object in a fluid. They move with the same velocity as the moving object and thereby remain pinned to the object. A well known hydrodynamical phenomenon, th ey have been shown to exist in numerical simulation studies but to date have not been observed experimentally in a plasma. In this paper we report the first experimental excitation of pinned solitons in a dusty (complex) plasma flowing over a charged obstacle. The experiments are performed in a {Pi} shaped Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx) device in which a dusty plasma is created in the background of a DC glow discharge Ar plasma using micron sized kaolin dust particles. A biased copper wire creates a potential structure that acts as a stationary charged object over which the dust fluid is made to flow at a highly supersonic speed. Under appropriate conditions nonlinear stationary structures are observed in the laboratory frame that correspond to pinned structures moving with the speed of the obstacle in the frame of the moving fluid. A systematic study is made of the propagation characteristics of these solitons by carefully tuning the flow velocity of the dust fluid by changing the height of the potential structure. It is found that the nature of the pinned solitons changes from a single humped one to a multi-humped one and their amplitudes increase with an increase of the flow velocity of the dust fluid. The experimental findings are then qualitatively compared with the numerical solutions of a model forced Korteweg de Vries (fKdV) equation.
The dispersion properties of low frequency dust acoustic waves in the strong coupling regime are investigated experimentally in an argon plasma embedded with a mixture of kaolin and $MnO_2$ dust particles. The neutral pressure is varied over a wide r ange to change the collisional properties of the dusty plasma. In the low collisional regime the turnover of the dispersion curve at higher wave numbers and the resultant region of $partialomega/partial k < 0$ are identified as signatures of dust-dust correlations. In the high collisional regime dust neutral collisions produce a similar effect and prevent an unambiguous identification of strong coupling effects.
