Doped SrTiO3 becomes a metal at extremely low doping concentrations n and is even superconducting with the superconducting transition temperature adopting a dome-like shape with the carrier concentration. It is shown here within the polarizability model that up to a well-defined carrier concentration transverse optic mode softening takes place together with polar nano-domain formation which evidences inhomogeneity and a two-component type behavior with metallicity coexisting with polarity. Beyond this region a conventional metal is formed where superconductivity as well as mode softening is absent. For this regime the effective electron-phonon coupling follows the superconducting transition temperature. Effusion measurements as well as macroscopic and nanoscopic conductivity measurements indicate that the distribution of oxygen vacancies is local and inhomogeneous from which it is concluded that metallicity stems from filaments which are embedded in a polar matrix as long as the carrier concentration is less than the critical one.

We show that the growth of the heterostructure LaGaO3/SrTiO3 yields the formation of a highly conductive interface. Our samples were carefully analyzed by high resolution electron microscopy, in order to assess their crystal perfection and to evaluat e the abruptness of the interface. Their carrier density and sheet resistance are compared to the case of LaAlO3/SrTiO3 and a superconducting transition is found. The results open the route to widening the field of polar-non polar interfaces, pose some phenomenological constrains to their underlying physics and highlight the chance of tailoring their properties for future applications by adopting suitable polar materials.
The structural and electronic properties of thermally reduced SrTiO3(100) single crystals have been investigated using a probe with real- and reciprocal-space sensitivity: a synchrotron radiation microsopic setup which offers the possibility of Scann ing Photoemission Microscopy and Angle Resolved Photoelectron Spectroscopy (ARPES) down to the nanometric scale. We have spectroscopically imaged the chemical composition of samples which present reproducible and suitable low-energy electron diffraction patterns after following well-established thermal reduction protocols. At the micrometric scale, Ca-rich areas have been directly imaged using high-energy resolution core level photoemission. Moreover, we have monitored the effect of Ca segregation on different features of the SrTiO3(100) electronic band structure, measuring ARPES inside, outside and at the interface of surface inhomogeneities with the identified Ca-rich areas. In particular, the interaction of Ca with the well-known intragap localized state, previously attributed to oxygen vacancies, has been investigated. Moreover, the combination of direct imaging and spectroscopic techniques with high spatial resolution has clarified the long-standing dilemma related to the bulk or surface character of Ca segregation in SrTiO3. Our results present solid evidence that the penetration depth of Ca segregation is very small. In contrast to what has been previously proposed, the origin of long-range surface reconstructions can unlikely be associated to Ca due to strong local variations of its surface concentration.
We studied the structural, magnetic and transport properties of LaAlO3/EuTiO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures grown by Pulsed Laser Deposition. The samples have been characterized in-situ by electron diffraction and scanning probe mi-croscopy and ex-situ by transport measurements and x-ray absorption spectroscopy. LaAlO3/EuTiO3/SrTiO3 films show a ferromagnetic transition at T<7.5 K, related to the ordering of Eu2+ spins, even in samples characterized by just two EuTiO3 unit cells. A finite metallic conductivity is observed only in the case of samples composed by one or two EuTiO3 unit cells and, simultaneously, by a LaAlO3 thickness equal or above 4 unit cells. The role of ferromagnetic EuTiO3 on the transport properties of delta-doped LaAlO3/EuTiO3/SrTiO3 is critically discussed.
The conductance confined at the interface of complex oxide heterostructures provides new opportunities to explore nanoelectronic as well as nanoionic devices. Herein we show that metallic interfaces can be realized in SrTiO3-based heterostructures wi th various insulating overlayers of amorphous LaAlO3, SrTiO3 and yttria-stabilized zirconia films. On the other hand, samples of amorphous La7/8Sr1/8MnO3 films on SrTiO3 substrates remain insulating. The interfacial conductivity results from the formation of oxygen vacancies near the interface, suggesting that the redox reactions on the surface of SrTiO3 substrates play an important role.
The interface between the band gap insulators LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 is known to host a highly mobile two-dimensional electron gas. Here we report on the fabrication and characterization of the NdGaO3/SrTiO3 interface, that shares with LaAlO3/SrTiO3 an al l-perovskite structure, the insulating nature of the single building block and the polar-non polar character. Our work demonstrates that in NdGaO3/SrTiO3 a metallic layer of mobile electrons is formed, with properties comparable to LaAlO3/SrTiO3. The localization of the injected electrons at the Ti sites, within a few unit cells from the interface, was proved by Atomic-scale-resolved EELS analyses. The electric transport and photoconduction of samples were also investigated. We found that irradiation by photons below the SrTiO3 gap does not increase the carrier density, but slightly enhances low temperature mobility. A giant persistent photoconductivity effect was instead observed, even under irradiation by low energy photons, in highly resistive samples fabricated at non-optimal conditions. We discuss the results in the light of different mechanisms proposed for the two-dimensional electron gas formation. Both the ordinary and the persistent photoconductivity in these systems are addressed and analyzed.
