We establish convergence of spectra of Neumann Laplacian in a thin neighborhood of a branching 2D structure in 3D to the spectrum of an appropriately defined operator on the structure itself. This operator is a 2D analog of the well known by now quantum graphs. As in the latter case, such considerations are triggered by various physics and engineering applications.

We establish absolute continuity of the spectrum of a periodic Schrodiner operator in R^n with periodic perforations. We also prove analytic dependece of the dispersion relation on the shape of the perforation.
Dirac structures are geometric objects that generalize Poisson structures and presymplectic structures on manifolds. They naturally appear in the formulation of constrained mechanical systems and play an essential role in structuring a dynamical syst em through the energy flow between its subsystems and elements. In this paper, we show that the evolution equations for open thermodynamic systems, i.e., systems exchanging heat and matter with the exterior, admit an intrinsic formulation in terms of Dirac structures. We focus on simple systems, in which the thermodynamic state is described by a single entropy variable. A main difficulty compared to the case of closed systems lies in the explicit time dependence of the constraint associated to the entropy production. We overcome this issue by working with the geometric setting of time-dependent nonholonomic mechanics. We define three type of Dirac dynamical systems for the nonequilibrium thermodynamics of open systems, based either on the generalized energy, the Lagrangian, or the Hamiltonian. The variational formulations associated to the Dirac systems formulations are also presented.

We relate open book decompositions of a 4-manifold M with its Engel structures. Our main result is, given an open book decomposition of M whose binding is a collection of 2-tori and whose monodromy preserves a framing of a page, the construction of a n En-gel structure whose isotropic foliation is transverse to the interior of the pages and tangent to the binding. In particular the pages are contact man-ifolds and the monodromy is a contactomorphism. As a consequence, on a parallelizable closed 4-manifold, every open book with toric binding carries in the previous sense an Engel structure. Moreover, we show that amongst the supported Engel structures we construct, there is a class of loose Engel structures.
We construct open book structures on all moment-angle manifolds and describe the topology of their leaves and bindings under certain restrictions. II. We also show, using a recent deep result about contact forms due to Borman, Eliashberg and Murphy [ 6], that every odd-dimensional moment-angle manifold admits a contact structure. This contrasts with the fact that, except for a few, well-determined cases, even-dimensional ones do not admit symplectic structures. We obtain the same results for large families of more general intersections of quadrics.
The spectrum of a semi-infinite quantum graph tube with square period cells is analyzed. The structure is obtained by rolling up a doubly periodic quantum graph into a tube along a period vector and then retaining only a semi-infinite half of the tub e. The eigenfunctions associated to the spectrum of the half-tube involve all Floquet modes of the full tube. This requires solving the complex dispersion relation $D(lambda,k_1,k_2)=0$ with $(k_1,k_2)in(mathbb{C}/2pimathbb{Z})^2$ subject to the constraint $alpha k_1 + beta k_2 equiv 0$ (mod $2pi$), where $alpha$ and $beta$ are integers. The number of Floquet modes for a given $lambdainmathbb{R}$ is $2maxleft{ alpha, beta right}$. Rightward and leftward modes are determined according to an indefinite energy flux form. The spectrum may contain eigenvalues that depend on the boundary conditions, and some eigenvalues may be embedded in the continuous spectrum.
