Analysis of road accidents is crucial to understand the factors involved and their impact. Accidents usually involve multiple variables like time, weather conditions, age of driver, etc. and hence it is challenging to analyze the data. To solve this problem, we use Multiple Correspondence Analysis (MCA) to first, filter out the most number of variables which can be visualized effectively in two dimensions and then study the correlations among these variables in a two dimensional scatter plot. Other variables, for which MCA cannot capture ample variance in the projected dimensions, we use hypothesis testing and time series analysis for the study.

The pervasive use of information and communication technology (ICT) in modern societies enables countless opportunities for individuals, institutions, businesses and scientists, but also raises difficult ethical and social problems. In particular, IC T helped to make societies more complex and thus harder to understand, which impedes social and political interventions to avoid harm and to increase the common good. To overcome this obstacle, the large-scale EU flagship proposal FuturICT intends to create a platform for accessing global human knowledge as a public good and instruments to increase our understanding of the information society by making use of ICT-based research. In this contribution, we outline the ethical justification for such an endeavor. We argue that the ethical issues raised by FuturICT research projects overlap substantially with many of the known ethical problems emerging from ICT use in general. By referring to the notion of Value Sensitive Design, we show for the example of privacy how this core value of responsible ICT can be protected in pursuing research in the framework of FuturICT. In addition, we discuss further ethical issues and outline the institutional design of FuturICT allowing to address them.

Now that so much of collective action takes place online, web-generated data can further understanding of the mechanics of Internet-based mobilisation. This trace data offers social science researchers the potential for new forms of analysis, using r eal-time transactional data based on entire populations, rather than sample-based surveys of what people think they did or might do. This paper uses a `big data approach to track the growth of over 8,000 petitions to the UK Government on the No. 10 Downing Street website for two years, analysing the rate of growth per day and testing the hypothesis that the distribution of daily change will be leptokurtic (rather than normal) as previous research on agenda setting would suggest. This hypothesis is confirmed, suggesting that Internet-based mobilisation is characterized by tipping points (or punctuated equilibria) and explaining some of the volatility in online collective action. We find also that most successful petitions grow quickly and that the number of signatures a petition receives on its first day is a significant factor in explaining the overall number of signatures a petition receives during its lifetime. These findings have implications for the strategies of those initiating petitions and the design of web sites with the aim of maximising citizen engagement with policy issues.
In times marked by political turbulence and uncertainty, as well as increasing divisiveness and hyperpartisanship, Governments need to use every tool at their disposal to understand and respond to the concerns of their citizens. We study issues raise d by the UK public to the Government during 2015-2017 (surrounding the UK EU-membership referendum), mining public opinion from a dataset of 10,950 petitions (representing 30.5 million signatures). We extract the main issues with a ground-up natural language processing (NLP) method, latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA). We then investigate their temporal dynamics and geographic features. We show that whilst the popularity of some issues is stable across the two years, others are highly influenced by external events, such as the referendum in June 2016. We also study the relationship between petitions issues and where their signatories are geographically located. We show that some issues receive support from across the whole country but others are far more local. We then identify six distinct clusters of constituencies based on the issues which constituents sign. Finally, we validate our approach by comparing the petitions issues with the top issues reported in Ipsos MORI survey data. These results show the huge power of computationally analyzing petitions to understand not only what issues citizens are concerned about but also when and from where.

Information visualization and visual analytics technology has attracted significant attention from the financial regulation community. In this research, we present regvis.net, a visual survey of regulatory visualization that allows researchers from b oth the computing and financial communities to review their literature of interest. We have collected and manually tagged more than 80 regulation visualization related publications. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first publication set tailored for regulatory visualization. We have provided a webpage (http://regvis.net) for interactive searches and filtering. Each publication is represented by a thumbnail of the representative system interface or key visualization chart, and users can conduct multi-condition screening explorations and fixed text searches.
This paper quantifies the effect of speed cameras on road traffic collisions using an approximate Bayesian doubly-robust (DR) causal inference estimation method. Previous empirical work on this topic, which shows a diverse range of estimated effects, is based largely on outcome regression (OR) models using the Empirical Bayes approach or on simple before and after comparisons. Issues of causality and confounding have received little formal attention. A causal DR approach combines propensity score (PS) and OR models to give an average treatment effect (ATE) estimator that is consistent and asymptotically normal under correct specification of either of the two component models. We develop this approach within a novel approximate Bayesian framework to derive posterior predictive distributions for the ATE of speed cameras on road traffic collisions. Our results for England indicate significant reductions in the number of collisions at speed cameras sites (mean ATE = -15%). Our proposed method offers a promising approach for evaluation of transport safety interventions.
