Sub-Poisson field with much reduced fluctuations in a cavity can boost quantum precision measurements via cavity-enhanced light-matter interactions. Strong coupling between an atom and a cavity mode has been utilized to generate highly sub-Poisson fields. However, a macroscopic number of optical intracavity photons with more than 3dB variance reduction in a setting of laser has not been possible. Here, we report sub-Poisson field lasing in a microlaser operating with hundreds of atoms with well-regulated atom-cavity coupling and interaction time. Its photon-number variance was 4dB below the standard quantum limit while the intracavity mean photon number scalable up to 600. The highly sub-Poisson photon statistics were not deteriorated by simultaneous interaction of a large number of atoms. Our finding suggests an effective pathway to widely scalable quasi-Fock-state lasing at the macroscopic scale.

We report the direct observation of sub-Poissonian number fluctuation for a degenerate Bose gas confined in an optical trap. Reduction of number fluctuations below the Poissonian limit is observed for average numbers that range from 300 to 60 atoms.
A quantum algorithm can be decomposed into a sequence consisting of single qubit and 2-qubit entangling gates. To optimize the decomposition and achieve more efficient construction of the quantum circuit, we can replace multiple 2-qubit gates with a single global entangling gate. Here, we propose and implement a scalable scheme to realize the global entangling gates on multiple $yb$ ion qubits by coupling to multiple motional modes through external fields. Such global gates require simultaneously decoupling of multiple motional modes and balancing of the coupling strengths for all the qubit-pairs at the gate time. To satisfy the complicated requirements, we develop a trapped-ion system with fully-independent control capability on each ion, and experimentally realize the global entangling gates. As examples, we utilize them to prepare the Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger (GHZ) states in a single entangling operation, and successfully show the genuine multi-partite entanglements up to four qubits with the state fidelities over $93.4%$.
We study the phenomena at the overlap of quantum chaos and nonclassical statistics for the time-dependent model of nonlinear oscillator. It is shown in the framework of Mandel Q-parameter and Wigner function that the statistics of oscillatory excitat ion number is drastically changed in order-to chaos transition. The essential improvement of sub-Poissonian statistics in comparison with an analogous one for the standard model of driven anharmonic oscillator is observed for the regular operational regime. It is shown that in the chaotic regime the system exhibits the range of sub- and super-Poissonian statistics which alternate one to other depending on time intervals. Unusual dependence of the variance of oscillatory number on the external noise level for the chaotic dynamics is observed.
Emission and absorption of light lie at the heart of light-matter interaction. Although the emission and absorption rates are regarded as intrinsic properties of atoms and molecules, various ways to modify these rates have been sought in critical app lications such as quantum information processing, metrology and light-energy harvesting. One of the promising approaches is to utilize collective behavior of emitters as in superradiance. Although superradiance has been observed in diverse systems, its conceptual counterpart in absorption has never been realized. Here, we demonstrate superabsorption, enhanced cooperative absorption, by correlated atoms of phase-matched superposition state. By implementing an opposite-phase-interference idea on a superradiant state or equivalently a time-reversal process of superradiance, we realized the superabsorption with its absorption rate much faster than that of the ordinary ground-state absorption. The number of photons completely absorbed for a given time interval was measured to be proportional to the square of the number of atoms. Our approach, breaking the limitation of the conventional absorption, can help weak-signal sensing and advance efficient light-energy harvesting as well as light-matter quantum interfaces.

Near-field, radially symmetric optical potentials centred around a levitated nanosphere can be used for sympathetic cooling and for creating a bound nanosphere-atom system analogous to a large molecule. We demonstrate that the long range, Coulomb-lik e potential produced by a single blue detuned field increases the collisional cross-section by eight orders of magnitude, allowing fast sympathetic cooling of a trapped nanosphere to microKelvin temperatures using cold atoms. By using two optical fields to create a combination of repulsive and attractive potentials, we demonstrate that a cold atom can be bound to a nanosphere creating a new levitated hybrid quantum system suitable for exploring quantum mechanics with massive particles.
