Generation and manipulation of many-body entangled states is of considerable interest, for applications in quantum simulation or sensing, for example. Measurement and verification of the resulting many-body state presents a formidable challenge, however, which can be simplified by multiplexed readout using shared measurement resources. In this work, we analyze and demonstrate state retrodiction for a system of optomechanical oscillators coupled to a single-mode optical cavity. Coupling to the shared cavity field facilitates simultaneous optical measurement of the oscillators transient dynamics at distinct frequencies. Optimal estimators for the oscillators initial state can be defined as a set of linear matched filters, derived from a detailed model for the detected homodyne signal. We find that the optimal state estimate for optomechanical retrodiction is obtained from high-cooperativity measurements, reaching estimate sensitivity at the Standard Quantum Limit (SQL). Simultaneous estimation of the state of multiple oscillators places additional limits on the estimate precision, due to the diffusive noise each oscillator adds to the optomechanical signal. However, we show that the sensitivity of simultaneous multi-mode state retrodiction reaches the SQL for sufficiently well-resolved oscillators. Finally, an experimental demonstration of two-mode retrodiction is presented, which requires further accounting for technical fluctuations of the oscillator frequency.

Quadrature squeezing of light is investigated in a hybrid atom-optomechanical system comprising a cloud of two-level atoms and a movable mirror mediated by a single-mode cavity field. When the system is at high temperatures with quadrature fluctuatio ns of light much above the standard quantum limit (SQL), excitation counting on the collective atomic state can effectively reduce the light noise close to the SQL. When the system is at low temperatures, considerable squeezing of light below the SQL is found at steady state. The squeezing is enhanced by simply increasing the atom-light coupling strength with the laser power optimized close to the unstable regime, and further noise reduction is achieved by decreasing various losses in the system. The presence of atoms and excitation counting on the atoms lessen the limitation of thermal noise, and the squeezing can be achieved at environment temperature of the order K. The nonclassicality of the light, embodied by the negative distributions of the Wigner function, is also studied by making non-Gaussian measurements on the atoms. It is shown that with feasible parameters excitation counting on the atoms is effective in inducing strongly optical nonclassicality.
Optical non-reciprocity, a phenomenon that allows unidirectional flow of optical field is pivoted on the time reversal symmetry breaking. The symmetry breaking happens in the cavity optomechanical system (COS) due to non uniform radiation pressure as a result of light-matter interaction, and is crucial in building non-reciprocal optical devices. In our proposed COS, we study the non-reciprocal transport of optical signals across two ports via three optical modes optomechanically coupled to the mechanical excitations of two nano-mechanical resonators (NMRs) under the influence of strong classical drive fields and weak probe fields. By tuning different system parameters, we discover the conversion of reciprocal to non-reciprocal signal transmission. We reveal perfect nonreciprocal transmission of output fields when the effective cavity detuning parameters are near resonant to the NMRs frequencies. The unidirectional non-reciprocal signal transport is robust to the optomechanical coupling parameters at resonance conditions. Moreover, the cavities photon loss rates play an inevitable role in the unidirectional flow of signal across the two ports. Bidirectional transmission can be fully controlled by the phase changes associated with the incoming probe and drive fields via two ports. Our scheme may provide a foundation for the compact non-reciprocal communication and quantum information processing, thus enabling new devices that route photons in unconventional ways such as all-optical diodes, optical transistors and optical switches.
We demonstrate broad-band reconfiguration of coupled photonic crystal nanobeam cavities by using optical gradient force induced mechanical actuation. Propagating waveguide modes that exist over wide wavelength range are used to actuate the structures and in that way control the resonance of localized cavity mode. Using this all-optical approach, more than 18 linewidths of tuning range is demonstrated. Using on-chip temperature self-referencing method that we developed, we determined that 20 % of the total tuning was due to optomechanical reconfiguration and the rest due to thermo-optic effects. Independent control of mechanical and optical resonances of our structures, by means of optical stiffening, is also demonstrated.

We present a new method to diagnose strong coupling in multi-mode open systems. Our method presents a non-trivial extension of exceptional point (EP) analysis employed for such systems; specifically, we show how eigenvectors can not only reproduce al l the features predicted by EPs but are also able to identify the physical modes that hybridize in different regions of the strong coupling regime. As a demonstration, we apply this method to study hybridization physics in a three-mode optomechanical system and determine the parameter regime for efficient sideband cooling of the mechanical oscillator in the presence of reservoir correlations.
Matched filters are routinely used in cosmology in order to detect galaxy clusters from mm observations through their thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich (tSZ) signature. In addition, they naturally provide an observable, the detection signal-to-noise or signi ficance, which can be used as a mass proxy in number counts analyses of tSZ-selected cluster samples. In this work, we show that this observable is, in general, non-Gaussian, and that it suffers from a positive bias, which we refer to as optimisation bias. Both aspects arise from the fact that the signal-to-noise is constructed through an optimisation operation on noisy data, and hold even if the cluster signal is modelled perfectly well, no foregrounds are present, and the noise is Gaussian. After reviewing the general mathematical formalism underlying matched filters, we study the statistics of the signal-to-noise with a set Monte Carlo mock observations, finding it to be well-described by a unit-variance Gaussian for signal-to-noise values of 6 and above, and quantify the magnitude of the optimisation bias, for which we give an approximate expression that may be used in practice. We also consider the impact of the bias on the cluster number counts of Planck and the Simons Observatory (SO), finding it to be negligible for the former and potentially significant for the latter.
