Motivated by the discovery of large-scale ionized clouds around AGN host galaxies, and particularly the large fraction of those which are consistent with photoionized gaseous tidal debris, we have searched for [O III] emission over wide fields around a set of Seyfert galaxies previously mapped in H I, many of which show extended gas features. The detection threshold was designed to reach mean emission-line surface brightness 10 times fainter than seen in such AGN-ionized clouds as Hannys Voorwerp, so that similar structures at larger distances (and ages) could be detected. Of 24 Seyfert galaxies, we find one extended emission feature, a discrete cloud projected 12 kpc from the center of Mkn 1 and spanning a transverse extent of 8 kpc. Optical spectroscopy of the Mkn 1 cloud confirms its redshift association with the Mkn 1- NGC 451 galaxy pair, shows it to closely match the kinematics of nearby H I, and reveals emission-line ratios requiring photoionization by the AGN at roughly the direct observed luminosity of the nucleus. Given the small fraction of H I features with detected [O III] emission, we constrain the typical opening angle of ionization cones in Seyfert galaxies to be of order 20 deg, if active episodes are long compared to the light-travel times involved. An appendix presents a derivation of an analytical expression for the probability of intersection of a cone with randomly oriented arcs, approximating the geometry of H I clouds and tails exposed to ionization cones. For the entire sample, the full opening angle of bicones must be <20 deg if the AGN are continuously bright for scales longer than the light-travel times across the H I structures. Since many ionization cones are observed to be much broader than this, our low detection fraction may add to evidence for the ubiquity of strong variations in AGN luminosity on scales 10,000-100,000 years.

Context: Very-high-energy (VHE; E>100 GeV) {gamma}-ray emission from blazars inevitably gives rise to electron-positron pair production through the interaction of these {gamma}-rays with the Extragalactic Background Light (EBL). Depending on the magn etic fields in the proximity of the source, the cascade initiated from pair production can result in either an isotropic halo around an initially beamed source or a magnetically broadened cascade flux. Aims: Both extended pair halo (PH) and magnetically broadened cascade (MBC) emission from regions surrounding the blazars 1ES 1101-232, 1ES 0229+200 and PKS 2155-304 were searched for, using VHE {gamma}-ray data taken with the High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.), and high energy (HE; 100 MeV<E<100 GeV) {gamma}-ray data with the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT). Methods: By comparing the angular distributions of the reconstructed gamma-ray events to the angular profiles calculated from detailed theoretical models, the presence of PH and MBC was investigated. Results: Upper limits on the extended emission around 1ES 1101-232, 1ES 0229+200 and PKS 2155-304 are found to be at a level of few percent of the Crab nebula flux above 1 TeV, depending on the assumed photon index of the cascade emission. Assuming strong Extra-Galactic Magnetic Field (EGMF) values, > 10$^{-12}$G, this limits the production of pair halos developing from electromagnetic cascades. For weaker magnetic fields, in which electromagnetic cascades would result in magnetically broadened cascades, EGMF strengths in the range (0.3 - 3)$times 10^{-15}$G were excluded for PKS 2155-304 at the 99% confidence level, under the assumption of a 1 Mpc coherence length.
The discovery of quasars few hundred megayears after the Big Bang represents a major challenge to our understanding of black holes and galaxy formation and evolution. Their luminosity is produced by extreme gas accretion onto black holes, which alrea dy reached masses of 10$^9$ M$_odot$ by z ~ 6. Simultaneously, their host galaxies form hundreds of stars per year, using up gas in the process. To understand which environments are able to sustain the rapid formation of these extreme sources we started a VLT/MUSE effort aimed at characterizing the surroundings of a sample of 5.7 < z < 6.6 quasars dubbed: the Reionization Epoch QUasar InvEstigation with MUSE (REQUIEM) survey. We here present results of our searches for extended Ly-Alpha halos around the first 31 targets observed as part of this program. Reaching 5-sigma surface brightness limits of 0.1-1.1 x 10$^{-17}$ erg/s/cm$^2$/arcsec$^2$ over a 1 arcsec$^2$ aperture, we were able to unveil the presence of 12 Ly-Alpha nebulae, 8 of which are newly discovered. The detected nebulae show a variety of emission properties and morphologies with luminosities ranging from 8 x 10$^{42}$ to 2 x 10$^{44}$ erg/s, FWHMs between 300 and 1700 km/s, sizes < 30 pkpc, and redshifts consistent with those of the quasar host galaxies. As the first statistical and homogeneous investigation of the circum-galactic medium of massive galaxies at the end of the reionization epoch, the REQUIEM survey enables the study of the evolution of the cool gas surrounding quasars in the first 3 Gyr of the Universe. A comparison with the extended Ly-Alpha emission observed around bright (M$_{1450}$ < -25 mag) quasars at intermediate redshift indicates little variations on the properties of the cool gas from z ~ 6 to z ~ 3 followed by a decline in the average surface brightness down to z ~ 2.
We utilize the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT) to search for extended Lyman-Alpha emission around the z~6.6 QSO J0305-3150. After carefully subtracting the point-spread-function, we reach a nominal 5-sigma s urface brightness limit of SB = 1.9x10$^{-18}$ erg/s/cm$^2$/arcsec$^2$ over a 1 arcsec$^2$ aperture, collapsing 5 wavelength slices centered at the expected location of the redshifted Lyman-Alpha emission (i.e. at 9256 Ang.). Current data suggest the presence (5-sigma, accounting for systematics) of a Lyman-Alpha nebula that extends for 9 kpc around the QSO. This emission is displaced and redshifted by 155 km/s with respect to the location of the QSO host galaxy traced by the [CII] emission line. The total luminosity is L = 3.0x10$^{42}$ erg/s. Our analysis suggests that this emission is unlikely to rise from optically thick clouds illuminated by the ionizing radiation of the QSO. It is more plausible that the Lyman-Alpha emission is due to fluorescence of the highly ionized optically thin gas. This scenario implies a high hydrogen volume density of n$_H$ ~ 6 cm$^{-3}$. In addition, we detect a Lyman-Alpha emitter (LAE) in the immediate vicinity of the QSO: i.e., with a projected separation of 12.5 kpc and a line-of-sight velocity difference of 560 km/s. The luminosity of the LAE is L = 2.1x10$^{42}$ erg/s and its inferred star-formation-rate is SFR ~ 1.3 M$_odot$/yr. The probability of finding such a close LAE is one order of magnitude above the expectations based on the QSO-galaxy cross-correlation function. This discovery is in agreement with a scenario where dissipative interactions favour the rapid build-up of super-massive black holes at early Cosmic times.
In this paper we introduce a method for stacking data cubelets extracted from interferometric surveys of galaxies in the redshifted 21-cm H,textsc{i} line. Unlike the traditional spectral stacking technique, which stacks one-dimensional spectra extra cted from data cubes, we examine a method based on image domain stacks which makes deconvolution possible. To test the validity of this assumption, we mock a sample of 3622 equatorial galaxies extracted from the GAMA survey, recently imaged as part of a DINGO-VLA project. We first examine the accuracy of the method using a noise-free simulation and note that the stacked image and flux estimation are dramatically improved compared to traditional stacking. The extracted H,textsc{i} mass from the deconvolved image agrees with the average input mass to within 3%. However, with traditional spectral stacking, the derived H,textsc{i} is incorrect by greater than a factor of 2. For a more realistic case of a stack with finite S/N, we also produced 20 different noise realisations to closely mimic the properties of the DINGO-VLA interferometric survey. We recovered the predicted average H,textsc{i} mass to within $sim$4%. Compared with traditional spectral stacking, this technique extends the range of science applications where stacking can be used, and is especially useful for characterizing the emission from extended sources with interferometers.
The circumnuclear region of M31, consisting of multiphase interstellar medium, provides a close-up view of the interaction of the central supermassive black hole and surrounding materials. Far-infrared (FIR) line structure lines and their flux ratios can be used as diagnostics of physical properties of the neutral gas in this region. Here we present the first FIR spectroscopic mapping of the circumnuclear region of M31 in [C ii] 158 um, [O i] 63 um and [O iii] 88 um lines with the Herschel Space Observatory, covering a ~500 x 500 pc (2 x 2) field. Significant emissions of all three lines are detected along the so-called nuclear spiral across the central kpc of M31. The velocity field under a spatial resolution of ~50 pc of the three lines are in broad consistency and also consistent with previous CO(3-2) line observations in the central region. Combined with existing [C ii] and CO(3-2) observations of five other fields targeting on the disk, we derived the radial distribution of [C ii]/CO(3-2) flux ratio, and found that this ratio is higher in the center than the disk, indicating a low gas density and strong radiation field in the central region. We also found that the [C ii]/FIR ratio in the central region is 5.4 (+-0.8) x 10^-3, which exhibits an increasing trend with the galactocentric radius, suggesting an increasing contribution from old stellar population to dust heating towards the center.
