We study stability of multivariable control-affine nonlinear systems under sparsification of feedback controllers. Sparsification in our context refers to the scheduling of the individual control inputs one at a time in rapid periodic sweeps over the set of control inputs, which corresponds to round-robin scheduling. We prove that if a locally asymptotically stabilizing feedback controller is sparsified via the round-robin scheme and each control action is scaled appropriately, then the corresponding equilibrium of the resulting system is stabilized when the scheduling is sufficiently fast; under mild additional conditions, local asymptotic stabilization of the corresponding equilibrium can also be guaranteed. Moreover, the basin of attraction for the equilibrium of scheduled system also remains same as the original system under sufficiently fast switching. Our technical tools are derived from optimal control theory, and our results also contribute to the literature on the stability of switched systems in the fast switching regime. Illustrative numerical examples depicting several subtle features of our results are included.

We consider the problem of asymptotic reconstruction of the state and parameter values in systems of ordinary differential equations. A solution to this problem is proposed for a class of systems of which the unknowns are allowed to be nonlinearly pa rameterized functions of state and time. Reconstruction of state and parameter values is based on the concepts of weakly attracting sets and non-uniform convergence and is subjected to persistency of excitation conditions. In absence of nonlinear parametrization the resulting observers reduce to standard estimation schemes. In this respect, the proposed method constitutes a generalization of the conventional canonical adaptive observer design.

We consider the covariance steering problem for nonlinear control-affine systems. Our objective is to find an optimal control strategy to steer the state of a system from an initial distribution to a target one whose mean and covariance are given. Du e to the nonlinearity, the existing techniques for linear covariance steering problems are not directly applicable. By leveraging the celebrated Girsanov theorem, we formulate the problem into an optimization over the space path distributions. We then adopt a generalized proximal gradient algorithm to solve this optimization, where each update requires solving a linear covariance steering problem. Our algorithm is guaranteed to converge to a local optimal solution with a sublinear rate. In addition, each iteration of the algorithm can be achieved in closed form, and thus the computational complexity of it is insensitive to the resolution of time-discretization.
Robust control is a core approach for controlling systems with performance guarantees that are robust to modeling error, and is widely used in real-world systems. However, current robust control approaches can only handle small system uncertainty, an d thus require significant effort in system identification prior to controller design. We present an online approach that robustly controls a nonlinear system under large model uncertainty. Our approach is based on decomposing the problem into two sub-problems, robust control design (which assumes small model uncertainty) and chasing consistent models, which can be solved using existing tools from control theory and online learning, respectively. We provide a learning convergence analysis that yields a finite mistake bound on the number of times performance requirements are not met and can provide strong safety guarantees, by bounding the worst-case state deviation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first approach for online robust control of nonlinear systems with such learning theoretic and safety guarantees. We also show how to instantiate this framework for general robotic systems, demonstrating the practicality of our approach.
This paper studies the extremum seeking control (ESC) problem for a class of constrained nonlinear systems. Specifically, we focus on a family of constraints allowing to reformulate the original nonlinear system in the so-called input-output normal f orm. To steer the system to optimize a performance function without knowing its explicit form, we propose a novel numerical optimization-based extremum seeking control (NOESC) design consisting of a constrained numerical optimization method and an inversion based feedforward controller. In particular, a projected gradient descent algorithm is exploited to produce the state sequence to optimize the performance function, whereas a suitable boundary value problem accommodates the finite-time state transition between each two consecutive points of the state sequence. Compared to available NOESC methods, the proposed approach i) can explicitly deal with output constraints; ii) the performance function can consider a direct dependence on the states of the internal dynamics; iii) the internal dynamics do not have to be necessarily stable. The effectiveness of the proposed ESC scheme is shown through extensive numerical simulations.

A graph theoretic framework recently has been proposed to stabilize interconnected multiagent systems in a distributed fashion, while systematically capturing the architectural aspect of cyber-physical systems with separate agent or physical layer an d control or cyber layer. Based on that development, in addition to the modeling uncertainties over the agent layer, we consider a scenario where the control layer is subject to the denial of service attacks. We propose a step-by-step procedure to design a control layer that, in the presence of the aforementioned abnormalities, guarantees a level of robustness and resiliency for the final two-layer interconnected multiagent system. The incorporation of an event-triggered strategy further ensures an effective use of the limited energy and communication resources over the control layer. We theoretically prove the resilient, robust, and Zeno-free convergence of all state trajectories to the origin and, via a simulation study, discuss the feasibility of the proposed ideas.
