The optimal spectral efficiency and number of independent channels for MIMO antennas in isotropic multipath channels are investigated when bandwidth requirements are placed on the antenna. By posing the problem as a convex optimization problem restricted by the port Q-factor a semi-analytical expression is formed for its solution. The antennas are simulated by method of moments and the solution is formulated both for structures fed by discrete ports, as well as for design regions characterized by an equivalent current. It is shown that the solution is solely dependent on the eigenvalues of the so-called energy modes of the antenna. The magnitude of these eigenvalues is analyzed for a linear dipole array as well as a plate with embedded antenna regions. The energy modes are also compared to the characteristic modes to validate characteristic modes as a design strategy for MIMO antennas. The antenna performance is illustrated through spectral efficiency over the Q-factor, a quantity that is connected to the capacity. It is proposed that the number of energy modes below a given Q-factor can be used to estimate the degrees of freedom for that Q-factor.

In this work, novel upper and lower bounds for the capacity of channels with arbitrary constraints on the support of the channel input symbols are derived. As an immediate practical application, the case of multiple-input multiple-output channels wit h amplitude constraints is considered. The bounds are shown to be within a constant gap if the channel matrix is invertible and are tight in the high amplitude regime for arbitrary channel matrices. Moreover, in the high amplitude regime, it is shown that the capacity scales linearly with the minimum between the number of transmit and receive antennas, similarly to the case of average power-constrained inputs.

We propose an uplink massive MIMO system using an array of holographic metasurfaces as a sector antenna. The antenna consists of a set of rectangular waveguide-fed metasurfaces combined along the elevation direction into a planar aperture, each with subwavelength-sized metamaterial elements as radiators. The metamaterial radiators are designed such that the waveguide-fed metasurface implements a holographic solution for the guided (or reference) mode, generating a fan beam towards a prescribed direction, thereby forming a multibeam antenna system. We demonstrate that a narrowband uplink massive MIMO system using the metasurfaces can achieve the sum capacity close to that offered by the Rayleigh channel at 3.5 GHz. We show that metasurfaces supporting multiple fan beams can achieve high spatial resolution in the azimuth directions in sub-6 GHz channels, and thereby form uncorrelated MIMO channels between the base station and users. Also, the proposed metasurface antenna is structurally simple, low-cost, and efficient, and thus is suitable to alleviate RF hardware issues common to massive MIMO systems equipped with a large antenna system.
Next generation wireless base stations and access points will transmit and receive using extremely massive numbers of antennas. A promising technology for realizing such massive arrays in a dynamically controllable and scalable manner with reduced co st and power consumption utilizes surfaces of radiating metamaterial elements, known as metasurfaces. To date, metasurfaces are mainly considered in the context of wireless communications as passive reflecting devices, aiding conventional transceivers in shaping the propagation environment. This article presents an alternative application of metasurfaces for wireless communications as active reconfigurable antennas with advanced analog signal processing capabilities for next generation transceivers. We review the main characteristics of metasurfaces used for radiation and reception, and analyze their main advantages as well as their effect on the ability to reliably communicate in wireless networks. As current studies unveil only a portion of the potential of metasurfaces, we detail a list of exciting research and implementation challenges which arise from the application of metasurface antennas for wireless transceivers.
We explore the capacity and generalized degrees of freedom of the two-user Gaussian X channel, i.e. a generalization of the 2 user interference channel where there is an independent message from each transmitter to each receiver. There are three main results in this paper. First, we characterize the sum capacity of the deterministic X channel model under a symmetric setting. Second, we characterize the generalized degrees of freedom of the Gaussian X channel under a similar symmetric model. Third, we extend the noisy interference capacity characterization previously obtained for the interference channel to the X channel. Specifically, we show that the X channel associated with noisy (very weak) interference channel has the same sum capacity as the noisy interference channel.
In this paper, we explore the benefits, in the sense of total (sum rate) degrees of freedom (DOF), of cooperation and cognitive message sharing for a two-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) Gaussian interference channel with $M_1$, $M_2$ anten nas at transmitters and $N_1$, $N_2$ antennas at receivers. For the case of cooperation (including cooperation at transmitters only, at receivers only, and at transmitters as well as receivers), the DOF is $min {M_1+M_2, N_1+N_2, max(M_1, N_2)), max(M_2, N_1)}$, which is the same as the DOF of the channel without cooperation. For the case of cognitive message sharing, the DOF is $min {M_1+M_2, N_1+N_2, (1-1_{T2})((1-1_{R2}) max(M_1, N_2) + 1_{R2} (M_1+N_2)), (1-1_{T1})((1-1_{R1}) max(M_2, N_1) + 1_{R1} (M_2+N_1)) }$ where $1_{Ti} = 1$ $(0)$ when transmitter $i$ is (is not) a cognitive transmitter and $1_{Ri}$ is defined in the same fashion. Our results show that while both techniques may increase the sum rate capacity of the MIMO interference channel, only cognitive message sharing can increase the DOF. We also find that it may be more beneficial for a user to have a cognitive transmitter than to have a cognitive receiver.
