This paper presents conditions for establishing topological controllability in undirected networks of diffusively coupled agents. Specifically, controllability is considered based on the signs of the edges (negative, positive or zero). Our approach differs from well-known structural controllability conditions for linear systems or consensus networks, where controllability conditions are based on edge connectivity (i.e., zero or nonzero edges). Our results first provide a process for merging controllable graphs into a larger controllable graph. Then, based on this process, we provide a graph decomposition process for evaluating the topological controllability of a given network.

We study the strong structural controllability (SSC) of diffusively coupled networks, where the external control inputs are injected to only some nodes, namely the leaders. For such systems, one measure of controllability is the dimension of strong s tructurally controllable subspace, which is equal to the smallest possible rank of controllability matrix under admissible (positive) coupling weights. In this paper, we compare two tight lower bounds on the dimension of strong structurally controllable subspace: one based on the distances of followers to leaders, and the other based on the graph coloring process known as zero forcing. We show that the distance-based lower bound is usually better than the zero-forcing-based bound when the leaders do not constitute a zero-forcing set. On the other hand, we also show that any set of leaders that can be shown to achieve complete SSC via the distance-based bound is necessarily a zero-forcing set. These results indicate that while the zero-forcing based approach may be preferable when the focus is only on verifying complete SSC, the distance-based approach is usually more informative when partial SSC is also of interest. Furthermore, we also present a novel bound based on the combination of these two approaches, which is always at least as good as, and in some cases strictly greater than, the maximum of the two bounds. We support our analysis with numerical results for various graphs and leader sets.
In this article, we present a method to learn the interaction topology of a network of agents undergoing linear consensus updates in a non invasive manner. Our approach is based on multivariate Wiener filtering, which is known to recover spurious edg es apart from the true edges in the topology. The main contribution of this work is to show that in the case of undirected consensus networks, all spurious links obtained using Wiener filtering can be identified using frequency response of the Wiener filters. Thus, the exact interaction topology of the agents is unveiled. The method presented requires time series measurements of the state of the agents and does not require any knowledge of link weights. To the best of our knowledge this is the first approach that provably reconstructs the structure of undirected consensus networks with correlated noise. We illustrate the effectiveness of the method developed through numerical simulations as well as experiments on a five node network of Raspberry Pis.
Network science have constantly been in the focus of research for the last decade, with considerable advances in the controllability of their structural. However, much less effort has been devoted to study that how to improve the controllability of c omplex networks. In this paper, a new algorithm is proposed to improve the controllability of complex networks by rewiring links regularly which transforms the network structure. Then it is demonstrated that our algorithm is very effective after numerical simulation experiment on typical network models (Erdos-Renyi and scale-free network). We find that our algorithm is mainly determined by the average degree and positive correlation of in-degree and out-degree of network and it has nothing to do with the network size. Furthermore, we analyze and discuss the correlation between controllability of complex networks and degree distribution index: power-law exponent and heterogeneity
In this paper we consider the problem of controlling a limited number of target nodes of a network. Equivalently, we can see this problem as controlling the target variables of a structured system, where the state variables of the system are associat ed to the nodes of the network. We deal with this problem from a different point of view as compared to most recent literature. Indeed, instead of considering controllability in the Kalman sense, that is, as the ability to drive the target states to a desired value, we consider the stronger requirement of driving the target variables as time functions. The latter notion is called functional target controllability. We think that restricting the controllability requirement to a limited set of important variables justifies using a more accurate notion of controllability for these variables. Remarkably, the notion of functional controllability allows formulating very simple graphical conditions for target controllability in the spirit of the structural approach to controllability. The functional approach enables us, moreover, to determine the smallest set of steering nodes that need to be actuated to ensure target controllability, where these steering nodes are constrained to belong to a given set. We show that such a smallest set can be found in polynomial time. We are also able to classify the possible actuated variables in terms of their importance with respect to the functional target controllability problem.
We consider a control problem involving several agents coupled through multiple unit-demand resources. Such resources are indivisible, and each agents consumption is modeled as a Bernoulli random variable. Controlling the number of such agents in a p robabilistic manner, subject to capacity constraints, is ubiquitous in smart cities. For instance, such agents can be humans in a feedback loop---who respond to a price signal, or automated decision-support systems that strive toward system-level goals. In this paper, we consider both single feedback loop corresponding to a single resource and multiple coupled feedback loops corresponding to multiple resources consumed by the same population of agents. For example, when a network of devices allocates resources to deliver several services, these services are coupled through capacity constraints on the resources. We propose a new algorithm with fundamental guarantees of convergence and optimality, as well as present an example illustrating its performance.
