A background-independent route towards a universal continuum limit in discrete models of quantum gravity proceeds through a background-independent form of coarse graining. This review provides a pedagogical introduction to the conceptual ideas underlying the use of the number of degrees of freedom as a scale for a Renormalization Group flow. We focus on tensor models, for which we explain how the tensor size serves as the scale for a background-independent coarse-graining flow. This flow provides a new probe of a universal continuum limit in tensor models. We review the development and setup of this tool and summarize results in the 2- and 3-dimensional case. Moreover, we provide a step-by-step guide to the practical implementation of these ideas and tools by deriving the flow of couplings in a rank-4-tensor model. We discuss the phenomenon of dimensional reduction in these models and find tentative first hints for an interacting fixed point with potential relevance for the continuum limit in four-dimensional quantum gravity.

Four-dimensional random geometries can be generated by statistical models with rank-4 tensors as random variables. These are dual to discrete building blocks of random geometries. We discover a potential candidate for a continuum limit in such a mode l by employing background-independent coarse-graining techniques where the tensor size serves as a pre-geometric notion of scale. A fixed point candidate which features two relevant directions is found. The possible relevance of this result in view of universal results for quantum gravity and a potential connection to the asymptotic-safety program is discussed.
The Renormalization Group encodes three concepts that could be key to accelerate progress in quantum gravity. First, it provides a micro-macro connection that could connect microscopic spacetime physics to phenomenology at observationally accessible scales. Second, it enables a search for universality classes that could link diverse quantum-gravity approaches and allow us to discover that distinct approaches could encode the same physics in mathematically distinct structures. Third, it enables the emergence of symmetries at fixed points of the Renormalization Group flow, providing a way for spacetime symmetries to emerge from settings in which these are broken at intermediate steps of the construction. These three concepts make the Renormalization Group an attractive method and conceptual underpinning of quantum gravity. Yet, in its traditional setup as a local coarse-graining, it could appear at odds with concepts like background independence that are expected of quantum gravity. Within the last years, several approaches to quantum gravity have found ways how these seeming contradictions could be reconciled and the power of the Renormalization Group approach unleashed in quantum gravity. This special issue brings together research papers and reviews from a broad range of quantum gravity approaches, providing a partial snapshot of this evolving field.
We outline, test, and apply a new scheme for nonpertubative analyses of quantized field systems in contact with dynamical gravity. While gravity is treated classically in the present paper, the approach lends itself for a generalization to full Quant um Gravity. We advocate the point of view that quantum field theories should be regularized by sequences of quasi-physical systems comprising a well defined number of the fields degrees of freedom. In dependence on this number, each system backreacts autonomously and self-consistently on the gravitational field. In this approach, the limit which removes the regularization automatically generates the physically correct spacetime geometry, i.e., the metric the quantum states of the field prefer to live in. We apply the scheme to a Gaussian scalar field on maximally symmetric spacetimes, thereby confronting it with the standard approaches. As an application, the results are used to elucidate the cosmological constant problem allegedly arising from the vacuum fluctuations of quantum matter fields. An explicit calculation shows that the problem disappears if the pertinent continuum limit is performed in the improved way advocated here. A further application concerns the thermodynamics of de Sitter space where the approach offers a natural interpretation of the micro-states that are counted by the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy.

Within the discrete gauge theory which is the basis of spin foam models, the problem of macroscopically faithful coarse graining is studied. Macroscopic data is identified; it contains the holonomy evaluation along a discrete set of loops and the hom otopy classes of certain maps. When two configurations share this data they are related by a local deformation. The interpretation is that such configurations differ by microscopic details. In many cases the homotopy type of the relevant maps is trivial for every connection; two important cases in which the homotopy data is composed by a set of integer numbers are: (i) a two dimensional base manifold and structure group U(1), (ii) a four dimensional base manifold and structure group SU(2). These cases are relevant for spin foam models of two dimensional gravity and four dimensional gravity respectively. This result suggests that if spin foam models for two-dimensional and four-dimensional gravity are modified to include all the relevant macroscopic degrees of freedom -the complete collection of macroscopic variables necessary to ensure faithful coarse graining-, then they could provide appropriate effective theories at a given scale.
We build the general conformally invariant linear wave operator for a free, symmetric, second-rank tensor field in a d-dimensional ($dgeqslant 2$) metric manifold, and explicit the special case of maximally symmetric spaces. Under the assumptions mad e, this conformally invariant wave operator is unique. The corresponding conformally invariant wave equation can be obtained from a Lagrangian which is explicitly given. We discuss how our result compares to previous works, in particular we hope to clarify the situation between conflicting results.
