The background gauge renormalization of the first order formulation of the Yang-Mills theory is studied by using the BRST identities. Together with the background symmetry, these identities allow for an iterative proof of renormalizability to all orders in perturbation theory. However, due to the fact that certain improper diagrams which violate the BRST symmetry should be removed, the renormalizability must be deduced indirectly. The recursive method involves rescalings and mixings of the fields, which lead to a renormalized effective action for the background field theory.

In the present paper the Yang-Mills theory in the first order formalism is studied. On classical level the first order formulation is equivalent to the standard second order description of the Yang-Mills theory. It is proven that both formulations remain equivalent on quantum level as well.
Using the background field method, we study in a general covariant gauge the renormalization of the 6-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. This requires background gauge invariant counterterms, some of which do not vanish on shell. Such counterterms occur, even off-shell, with gauge-independent coefficients. The analysis is done at one loop order and the extension to higher orders is discussed by means of the BRST identities. We examine the behaviour of the beta function, which implies that this theory is not asymptotically free.
Studying the gauge-invariant renormalizability of four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory using the background field method and the BV-formalism, we derive a classical master-equation homogeneous with respect to the antibracket by introducing antifield pa rtners to the background fields and parameters. The constructed model can be renormalized by the standard method of introducing counterterms. This model does not have (exact) multiplicative renormalizability but it does have this property in the physical sector (quasimultiplicative renormalizability).
We reconsider the algebraic BRS renormalization of Wittens topological Yang-Mills field theory by making use of a vector supersymmetry Ward identity which improves the finiteness properties of the model. The vector supersymmetric structure is a commo n feature of several topological theories. The most general local counterterm is determined and is shown to be a trivial BRS-coboundary.

Action of 4 dimensional N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is written by employing the superfields in N=4 superspace which were used to prove the equivalence of its constraint equations and equations of motion. Integral forms of the extended supers pace are engaged to collect all of the superfields in one master superfield. The proposed N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills action in extended superspace is shown to acquire a simple form in terms of the master superfield.
