We have studied the correlation potentials produced by various adiabatic connection models (ACM) for several atoms and molecules. The results have been compared to accurate reference potentials (coupled cluster and quantum Monte Carlo results) as well as to state-of-the-art ab initio DFT approaches. We have found that all the ACMs yield correlation potentials that exhibit a correct behavior, quite resembling scaled second-order Gorling-Levy (GL2) potentials, and including most of the physically meaningful features of the accurate reference data. The behavior and contribution of the strong-interaction limit potentials has also been investigated and discussed.

Approximate exchange-correlation functionals built by modeling in a non-linear way the adiabatic connection (AC) integrand of density functional theory have many attractive features, being virtually parameters-free and satisfying different exact prop erties, but they also have a fundamental flaw: they violate the size-consistency condition, crucial to evaluate interaction energies of molecular systems. We show that size consistency in the AC-based functionals can be restored in a very simple way at no extra computational cost. Results on a large set of benchmark molecular interaction energies show that functionals based on the interaction strength interpolation approximations are significantly more accurate than the second-order perturbation theory.

Aiming to remedy the incorrect asymptotic behavior of conventional semilocal exchange-correlation (XC) density functionals for finite systems, we propose an asymptotic correction scheme, wherein an exchange density functional whose functional derivat ive has the correct (-1/r) asymptote can be directly added to any semilocal density functional. In contrast to semilocal approximations, our resulting exchange kernel in reciprocal space exhibits the desirable singularity of the type O(-1/q^2) as q -> 0, which is a necessary feature for describing the excitonic effects in non-metallic solids. By applying this scheme to a popular semilocal density functional, PBE [J. P. Perdew, K. Burke, and M. Ernzerhof, Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 3865 (1996)], the predictions of the properties that are sensitive to the asymptote are significantly improved, while the predictions of the properties that are insensitive to the asymptote remain essentially the same as PBE. Relative to the popular model XC potential scheme, our scheme is significantly superior for ground-state energies and related properties. In addition, without loss of accuracy, two closely related schemes are developed for the efficient treatment of large systems.

In this chapter, we provide a review of ground-state Kohn-Sham density-functional theory of electronic systems and some of its extensions, we present exact expressions and constraints for the exchange and correlation density functionals, and we discu ss the main families of approximations for the exchange-correlation energy: semilocal approximations, single-determinant hybrid approximations, multideterminant hybrid approximations, dispersion-corrected approximations, as well as orbital-dependent exchange-correlation density functionals. The chapter aims at providing both a consistent birds-eye view of the field and a detailed description of some of the most used approximations. It is intended to be readable by chemists/physicists and applied mathematicians.

The many-body problem can in general not be solved exactly, and one of the most prominent approximations is to build perturbation expansions. A huge variety of expansions is possible, which differ by the quantity to be expanded, the expansion variabl e, the starting point, and ideas how to resum or terminate the series. Although much has been discussed and much has been done, some choices were made for historical reasons, in particular, limited computation or storage capacities. The present work aims at examining the justifications for different choices made in different contexts, by comparing ingredients of functionals based on GF s on one side, and on the charge density on the other side. Of particular interest will be the question of how to build an optimal starting point for the approximation of non-local quantities, making use of near- or far-sightedness, and daring to consider models beyond the homogeneous electron gas. This will include the use of connector approximations. We will also discuss why it is a good idea to build functionals of the density.
We present the self-consistent implementation of current-dependent (hybrid) meta generalized gradient approximation (mGGA) density functionals using London atomic orbitals. A previously proposed generalized kinetic energy density is utilized to imple ment mGGAs in the framework of Kohn--Sham current density-functional theory (KS-CDFT). A unique feature of the non-perturbative implementation of these functionals is the ability to seamlessly explore a wide range of magnetic fields up to 1 a.u. ($sim 235000$T) in strength. CDFT functionals based on the TPSS and B98 forms are investigated and their performance is assessed by comparison with accurate CCSD(T) data. In the weak field regime magnetic properties such as magnetizabilities and NMR shielding constants show modest but systematic improvements over GGA functionals. However, in strong field regime the mGGA based forms lead to a significantly improved description of the recently proposed perpendicular paramagnetic bonding mechanism, comparing well with CCSD(T) data. In contrast to functionals based on the vorticity these forms are found to be numerically stable and their accuracy at high field suggests the extension of mGGAs to CDFT via the generalized kinetic energy density should provide a useful starting point for further development of CDFT approximations.
