We discuss the effective photonic potential for TM waves in inhomogeneous isotropic media. The model provides an easy and intuitive comprehension of form birefringence, paving the way for a new approach on the design of graded-index optical waveguides on nanometric scales. We investigate the application to nanophotonic devices, including integrated nanoscale wave plates and slot waveguides.
We demonstrate photonic crystal nanobeam cavities that support both TE- and TM-polarized modes, each with a Quality factor greater than one million and a mode volume on the order of the cubic wavelength. We show that these orthogonally polarized mode
We experimentally demonstrate high Quality factor dual-polarized TE-TM photonic crystal nanobeam cavities. The free-standing nanobeams are fabricated in a 500 nm thick silicon layer, and are probed using both tapered optical fiber and free-space reso
Photonic crystals with a finite size can support surface modes when appropriately terminated. We calculate the dispersion curves of surface modes for different terminations using the plane wave expansion method. These non-radiative surface modes can
Bound states in the continuum (BICs) in photonic crystals represent the unique solutions of wave equations possessing an infinite quality-factor. We design a type of bilayer photonic crystal and study the influence of symmetry and coupling between TE
We present an analytical study of the mode degeneracy in non-Hermitian photonic crystals (PC) with $C_{4v}$ symmetry, from the perspective of the coupled-wave-theory (CWT). The wave couplings and leakages within the non-Hermitian PCs are depicted, an
