We present the concept of nonreciprocal interferometers. These two-way devices let particles pass in both directions, but in one direction break the phase of the particles wave functions. Such filters can be realized by using, for example, asymmetric quantum rings. Furthermore, we propose arrangements of these interferometers to obtain larger interferometers which are expected to exhibit a puzzling behavior that resembles Maxwell demon action. We indicate an opportunity to resolve this puzzle experimentally.

A Mn4 single-molecule magnet displays asymmetric Berry-phase interference patterns in the transverse-field (HT) dependence of the magnetization tunneling probability when a longitudinal field (HL) is present, contrary to symmetric patterns observed f or HL=0. Reversal of HL results in a reflection of the transverse-field asymmetry about HT=0, as expected on the basis of the time-reversal invariance of the spin-orbit Hamiltonian which is responsible for the tunneling oscillations. A fascinating motion of Berry-phase minima within the transverse-field magnitude-direction phase space results from a competition between noncollinear magnetoanisotropy tensors at the two distinct Mn sites.
A new operating regime of the Superconducting Quantum Interference Filter (SQIF) is investigated. The voltage to magnetic field response function, V(H), is determined by a Fraunhofer dependence of the critical current and magnetic flux focusing effec t in Josephson junctions (F-mode). For SQIF-arrays made of high-Tc superconducting bicrystal Josephson junctions the F-mode plays a predominant role in the voltage-field response V(H). The relatively large superconducting loops of the SQIF are used for inductive coupling to the external input circuit. It is shown that the output noise of a SQIF-array measured with a cooled amplifier in the 1-2 GHz range is determined by the slope of the V(H) characteristic. Power gain and saturation power were evaluated using low frequency SQIF parameters. Finally, we consider the influence of the spread in the parameters of Josephson junctions in the SQIF-array on the V(H) characteristic of the whole structure.

We study the conductivity of graphene with a smooth but particle-hole-asymmetric disorder potential. Using perturbation theory for the weak-disorder regime and numerical calculations we investigate how the particle-hole asymmetry shifts the position of the minimal conductivity away from the Dirac point $varepsilon = 0$. We find that the conductivity minimum is shifted in opposite directions for weak and strong disorder. For large disorder strengths the conductivity minimum appears close to the doping level for which electron and hole doped regions (puddles) are equal in size.
The electronic bandstructure of a solid is a collection of allowed bands separated by forbidden bands, revealing the geometric symmetry of the crystal structures. Comprehensive knowledge of the bandstructure with band parameters explains intrinsic ph ysical, chemical and mechanical properties of the solid. Here we report the artificial polaritonic bandstructures of two-dimensional honeycomb lattices for microcavity exciton-polaritons using GaAs semiconductors in the wide-range detuning values, from cavity-photon-like (red-detuned) to exciton-like (blue-detuned) regimes. In order to understand the experimental bandstructures and their band parameters, such as gap energies, bandwidths, hopping integrals and density of states, we originally establish a polariton band theory within an augmented plane wave method with two-kind-bosons, cavity photons trapped at the lattice sites and freely moving excitons. In particular, this two-kind-band theory is absolutely essential to elucidate the exciton effect in the bandstructures of blue-detuned exciton-polaritons, where the flattened exciton-like dispersion appears at larger in-plane momentum values captured in our experimental access window. We reach an excellent agreement between theory and experiments in all detuning values.

We construct a low-energy effective action for a two-dimensional non-relativistic topological (i.e. gapped) phase of matter in a continuum, which completely describes all of its bulk electrical, thermal, and stress-related properties in the limit of low frequencies, long distances, and zero temperature, without assuming either Lorentz or Galilean invariance. This is done by generalizing Luttingers approach to thermoelectric phenomena, via the introduction of a background vielbein (i.e. gravitational) field and spin connection a la Cartan, in addition to the electromagnetic vector potential, in the action for the microscopic degrees of freedom (the matter fields). Crucially, the geometry of spacetime is allowed to have timelike and spacelike torsion. These background fields make all natural invariances--- under U(1) gauge transformations, translations in both space and time, and spatial rotations---appear locally, and corresponding conserved currents and the stress tensor can be obtained, which obey natural continuity equations. On integrating out the matter fields, we derive the most general form of a local bulk induced action to first order in derivatives of the background fields, from which thermodynamic and transport properties can be obtained. We show that the gapped bulk cannot contribute to low-temperature thermoelectric transport other than the ordinary Hall conductivity; the other thermoelectric effects (if they occur) are thus purely edge effects. The coupling to reduced spacelike torsion is found to be absent in minimally-coupled models, and using a generalized Belinfante stress tensor, the stress response to time-dependent vielbeins (i.e. strains) is the Hall viscosity, which is robust against perturbations and related to the spin current as in earlier work.
