Physical systems with discrete energy levels are ubiquitous in nature and are fundamental building blocks of quantum technology. Realizing controllable artifcial atom- and molecule-like systems for light would allow for coherent and dynamic control of the frequency, amplitude and phase of photons. In this work, we demonstrate a photonic molecule with two distinct energy-levels and control it by external microwave excitation. We show signature two-level dynamics including microwave induced photonic Autler-Townes splitting, Stark shift, Rabi oscillation and Ramsey interference. Leveraging the coherent control of optical energy, we show on-demand photon storage and retrieval in optical microresonators by reconfguring the photonic molecule into a bright-dark mode pair. These results of dynamic control of light in a programmable and scalable electro-optic platform open doors to applications in microwave photonic signal processing, quantum photonics in the frequency domain, optical computing concepts and simulations of complex physical systems.

The recent realization of photonic topological insulators has brought the discovery of fundamentally new states of light and revolutionary applications such as non-reciprocal devices for photonic diodes and robust waveguides for light routing. The sp atially distinguished layer pseudospin has attracted attention in two-dimensional electronic materials. Here we report layered photonic topological insulators based on all-dielectric bilayer photonic crystal slabs. The introduction of layer pseudospin offers more dispersion engineering capability, leading to the layer-polarized and layer-mixed photonic topological insulators. Their phase transition is demonstrated with a model Hamiltonian by considering the nonzero interlayer coupling. Layer-direction locking behavior is found in layer-polarized photonic topological insulators. High transmission is preserved in the bilayer domain wall between two layer-mixed photonic topological insulators, even when a large defect is introduced. Layered photonic topological insulators not only offer a route towards the observation of richer nontrivial phases, but also open a way for device applications in integrated photonics and information processing by using the additional layer pseudospin.
Quadrupole topological phases, exhibiting protected boundary states that are themselves topological insulators of lower dimensions, have recently been of great interest. Extensions of these ideas from current tight binding models to continuum theorie s for realistic materials require the identification of quantized invariants describing the bulk quadrupole order. Here we identify the analog of quadrupole order in Maxwells equations for a photonic crystal (PhC) and identify quadrupole topological photonic crystals formed through a band inversion process. Unlike prior studies relying on threaded flux, our quadrupole moment is quantized purely by crystalline symmetries, which we confirm using three independent methods: analysis of symmetry eigenvalues, numerical calculations of the nested Wannier bands, and the expectation value of the quadrupole operator. Furthermore, through the bulk-edge correspondence of Wannier bands, we reveal the boundary manifestations of nontrivial quadrupole phases as quantized polarizations at edges and bound states at corners. Finally, we relate the nontrivial corner states to the emergent phenomena of quantized fractional corner charges and a filling anomaly as first predicted in electronic systems. Our work paves the way to further explore higher-order topological phases in nanophotonic systems and our method of inducing quadrupole phase transitions is also applicable to other wave systems, such as electrons, phonons and polaritons.
In this work we describe different types of photonic structures that allow tunability of the photonic band gap upon the application of external stimuli, as the electric or magnetic field. We review and compare two porous 1D photonic crystals: in the first one a liquid crystal has been infiltrated in the pores of the nanoparticle network, while in the second one the optical response to the electric field of metallic nanoparticles has been exploited. Then, we present a 1D photonic crystal made with indium tin oxide (ITO) nanoparticles, and we propose this system for electro-optic tuning. Finally, we describe a microcavity with a defect mode that is tuned in the near infrared by the magnetic field, envisaging a contact-less magneto-optic switch. These optical switches can find applications in ICT and electrochromic windows.
A remarkable property of quantum mechanics in two-dimensional (2D) space is its ability to support anyons, particles that are neither fermions nor bosons. Theory predicts that these exotic excitations can be realized as bound states confined near top ological defects, like Majorana zero modes trapped in vortices in topological superconductors. Intriguingly, in the simplest cases the nontrivial phase that arises when such defects are braided around one another is not intrinsically quantum mechanical; rather, it can be viewed as a manifestation of the geometric (Pancharatnam-Berry) phase in wave mechanics, enabling the simulation of such phenomena in classical systems. Here we report the first experimental measurement in any system, quantum or classical, of the geometric phase due to such a braiding process. These measurements are obtained using an interferometer constructed from highly tunable 2D arrays of photonic waveguides. Our results introduce photonic lattices as a versatile playground for the experimental study of topological defects and their braiding, complementing ongoing efforts in solid-state systems and cold atomic gases.
