We have studied the physical properties of Nd$_2$O$_3$ with neutron diffraction, inelastic neutron scattering, heat capacity, and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Nd$_2$O$_3$ crystallizes in a trigonal structure, with Nd$^{3+}$ ions surrounded by cages of 7 oxygen anions. The crystal field spectrum consists of four excitations spanning the energy range 3-60 meV. The refined eigenfunctions indicate XY-spins in the $ab$ plane. The Curie-Weiss temperature of $theta_{CW}=-23.7(1)$ K was determined from magnetic susceptibility measurements. Heat capacity measurements show a sharp peak at 550 mK and a broader feature centered near 1.5 K. Neutron diffraction measurements show that the 550 mK transition corresponds to long-range anti-ferromagnetic order implying a frustration index of $theta_{CW}/T_Napprox43$. These results indicate that Nd$_2$O$_3$ is a structurally and chemically simple model system for frustration caused by competing interactions with moments with predominate XY anisotropy.

We investigate the low temperature structural and physical properties of the trilayer nickelates R4Ni3O10 (R = La, Pr and Nd) using resistivity, thermopower, thermal conductivity, specific heat, high-resolution synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction an d thermal expansion experiments. We show that all three compounds crystallize with a monoclinic symmetry, and undergo a metal-to-metal (MMT) transition at 135 K (La), 156 K (Pr) and 160 K (Nd). At MMT, the lattice parameters show distinct anomalies; however, without any lowering of the lattice symmetry. Unambiguous signatures of MMT are also seen in magnetic and thermal measurements, which suggest a strong coupling between the electronic, magnetic and structural degrees of freedom in these nickelates. Analysis of thermal expansion yields hydrostatic pressure dependence of MMT in close agreement with experiments. We show that the 9-fold coordinated Pr ions in the rocksalt (RS) layers have a crystal field (CF) split doublet ground state with possible antiferromagnetic ordering at 5 K. The Pr ions located in the perovskite block (PB) layers with 12-fold coordination, however, exhibit a non-magnetic singlet ground state. The CF ground state of Nd in both RS and PB layers is a Kramers doublet. Heat capacity of R = Nd shows a Schottky-like anomaly near35 K, and an upturn below T = 10 K suggesting the presence of short-range correlations between the Nd moments. However, no signs of long-range ordering could be found down to 2 K despite a sizeable theta_p ~ -40 K. The strongly suppressed magnetic long-range ordering in both R = Pr and Nd suggests the presence of strong magnetic frustration in these compounds. The low-temperature resistivity shows a T^0.5 dependence. No evidence for the heavy fermion behavior could be found in any of the three compounds.
Single crystals of Nd$_2$O$_3$ were grown and characterized using neutron scattering and thermodynamic measurements. Nd$_2$O$_3$ has long-range antiferromagnetic order below $T_{rm N}$ = 0.55 K and specific heat measurements have demonstrated that a significant amount of the magnetic entropy is released above $T_{rm N}$. Inelastic neutron scattering experiments reveal a magnetic mode(s) with little dispersion peaked at $approx$ 0.37 meV that is of greatest intensity below $T_{rm N}$ but persists above 2$T_{rm N}$. This persistence of dynamic correlations is likely related to frustrated interactions associated with the nearly-ideal stacked triangular lattice geometry of $J_{textrm{eff}}$ = 1/2 spins on Nd$^{3+}$ ions. The magnetization is observed to be strongly anisotropic at all temperatures due to crystal field effects, with easy-plane anisotropy observed. A non-compensated magnetic structure is inferred from the temperature-dependence of the magnetization when a magnetic field of sufficient strength is applied within the basal plane near $T_{rm N}$, and the evolution of the long-range order is summarized in a temperature-field phase diagram.
We report the physical properties and electronic structure calculations of a layered chromium oxypnictide, Sr$_2$Cr$_3$As$_2$O$_2$, which crystallizes in a Sr$_2$Mn$_3$As$_2$O$_2$-type structure containing both CrO$_2$ planes and Cr$_2$As$_2$ layers. The newly synthesized material exhibits a metallic conduction with a dominant electron-magnon scattering. Magnetic and specific-heat measurements indicate at least two intrinsic magnetic transitions below room temperature. One is an antiferromagnetic transition at 291 K, probably associated with a spin ordering in the Cr$_2$As$_2$ layers. Another transition is broad, occurring at around 38 K, and possibly due to a short-range spin order in the CrO$_2$ planes. Our first-principles calculations indicate predominant two-dimensional antiferromagnetic exchange couplings, and suggest a KG-type (i.e. K$_2$NiF$_4$ type for CrO$_2$ planes and G type for Cr$_2$As$_2$ layers) magnetic structure, with reduced moments for both Cr sublattices. The corresponding electronic states near the Fermi energy are mostly contributed from Cr-3$d$ orbitals which weakly (modestly) hybridize with the O-2$p$ (As-4$p$) orbitals in the CrO$_2$ (Cr$_2$As$_2$) layers. The bare bandstructure density of states at the Fermi level is only $sim$1/4 of the experimental value derived from the low-temperature specific-heat data, consistent with the remarkable electron-magnon coupling. The title compound is argued to be a possible candidate to host superconductivity.

We have determined the terahertz spectrum of the chiral langasite Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$ by means of synchrotron-radiation measurements. Two excitations are revealed that are shown to have a different nature. The first one, purely magnetic, is observed at low temperature in the magnetically ordered phase and is assigned to a magnon. The second one persits far into the paramagnetic phase and exhibits both an electric and a magnetic activity at slightly different energies. This magnetoelectric excitation is interpreted in terms of atomic rotations and requires a helical electric polarization.
We report the anisotropic magnetic properties of the ternary compound ErAl$_2$Ge$_2$. Single crystals of this compound were grown by high temperature solution growth technique, using Al:Ge eutectic composition as flux. From the powder x-ray diffractio n we confirmed that ErAl$_2$Ge$_2$ crystallizes in the trigonal CaAl$_2$Si$_2$-type crystal structure. The anisotropic magnetic properties of a single crystal were investigated by measuring the magnetic susceptibility, magnetization, heat capacity and electrical resistivity. A bulk magnetic ordering occurs around 4 K inferred from the magnetic susceptibility and the heat capacity. The magnetization measured along the $ab$-plane increases more rapidly than along the $c$-axis suggesting the basal $ab$-plane as the easy plane of magnetization. The magnetic susceptibility, magnetization and the $4f$-derived part of the heat capacity in the paramagnetic regime analysed based on the point charge model of the crystalline electric field (CEF) indicate a relatively low CEF energy level splitting.
