I discuss the status of MCP-based photo-detector amplification sections and Cherenkov light sources for precise timing measurements of charged particles and gamma rays. Sub-psec resolution is predicted for the large pulses such as those produced by a charged particle or electromagnetic shower traversing a photo-detector entrance window. Measuring events with sub-mm resolution in each of the 4 dimensions expands the optical phase space from 4 dimensions, allowing emittance transformations that can minimize expensive instrumented photo-sensitive area.

Xenon dual-phase time projection chambers designed to search for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles have so far shown a relative energy resolution which degrades with energy above $sim$200 keV due to the saturation effects. This has limited their s ensitivity in the search for rare events like the neutrinoless double-beta decay of $^{136}$Xe at its $Q$-value, $Q_{betabeta}simeq$ 2.46 MeV. For the XENON1T dual-phase time projection chamber, we demonstrate that the relative energy resolution at 1 $sigma/mu$ is as low as (0.80$pm$0.02) % in its one-ton fiducial mass, and for single-site interactions at $Q_{betabeta}$. We also present a new signal correction method to rectify the saturation effects of the signal readout system, resulting in more accurate position reconstruction and indirectly improving the energy resolution. The very good result achieved in XENON1T opens up new windows for the xenon dual-phase dark matter detectors to simultaneously search for other rare events.
Multi-object or integral field spectrographs are recognized techniques for achieving simultaneous spectroscopic observations of different or extended sky objects with a high multiplex factor. In this communication is described a complementary approac h for realizing similar measurements under different spectral resolutions at the same time. We describe the basic principle of this new type of spectrometer, that is based on the utilization of an optical pupil slicer. An optical design inspired from an already studied instrument is then presented and commented for the sake of illustration. Technical issues about the pupil slicer and diffractive components are also discussed. We finally conclude on the potential advantages and drawbacks of the proposed system.
We give an analytic treatment of the time resolution and efficiency of Single Photon Avalanche Diodes (SPADs) and Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs). We provide closed-form expressions for structures with uniform electric fields and efficient numerical prescriptions for arbitrary electric field configurations. We discuss the sensor performance for single photon detection and also for charged particle detection.
We demonstrate a neutron tomography technique with sub-micrometer spatial resolution. Our method consists of measuring neutron diffraction spectra using a double crystal diffractometer as a function of sample rotation and then using a phase retrieval algorithm followed by tomographic reconstruction to generate a density map of the sample. In this first demonstration, silicon phase-gratings are used as samples, the periodic structure of which allows the shape of the gratings to be imaged without the need of position sensitive detectors. Topological features found in the reconstructions also appear in scanning electron micrographs. The reconstructions have a resolution of about 300 nm, which is over an order of magnitude smaller than the resolution of radiographic, phase contrast, differential phase contrast, and dark field neutron tomography methods. Further optimization of the underlying phase recovery and tomographic reconstruction algorithm is also considered.
