We theoretically investigate the temperature-dependent static susceptibility and long-range magnetic coupling of three-dimensional (3D) chiral gapless electron-hole systems (semimetals) with arbitrary band dispersion [i.e., $varepsilon(k) sim k^N$, where $k$ is the wave vector and $N$ is a positive integer]. We study the magnetic properties of these systems in the presence of dilute random magnetic impurities. Assuming carrier-mediated Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida indirect exchange interaction, we find that the magnetic ordering of intrinsic 3D chiral semimetals in the presence of dilute magnetic impurities is ferromagnetic for all values of $N$. Using finite-temperature self-consistent field approximation, we calculate the ferromagnetic transition temperature ($T_{rm c}$). We find that $T_{rm c}$ increases with increasing $N$ due to the enhanced density of states, and the calculated $T_{rm c}$ is experimentally accessible assuming reasonable coupling between the magnetic impurities and itinerant carriers.

Weyl and Dirac semimetals are three dimensional phases of matter with gapless electronic excitations that are protected by topology and symmetry. As three dimensional analogs of graphene, they have generated much recent interest. Deep connections exi st with particle physics models of relativistic chiral fermions, and -- despite their gaplessness -- to solid-state topological and Chern insulators. Their characteristic electronic properties lead to protected surface states and novel responses to applied electric and magnetic fields. Here we review the theoretical foundations of these phases, their proposed realizations in solid state systems, recent experiments on candidate materials, as well as their relation to other states of matter.
We theoretically study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between magnetic impurities in both Dirac and Weyl semimetals (SMs). We find that the internode process, as well as the unique three-dimensional spin-momentum locking, has si gnificant influences on the RKKY interaction, resulting in both a Heisenberg and an Ising term, and an additional Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya term if the inversion symmetry is absent. These interactions can lead to rich spin textures and possible ferromagnetism in Dirac and time-reversal symmetry-invariant Weyl SMs. The effect of anisotropic Dirac and Weyl nodes on the RKKY interaction is also discussed. Our results provide an alternative scheme to engineer topological SMs and shed new light on the application of Dirac and Weyl SMs in spintronics.

We numerically study the three-dimensional (3D) quantum Hall effect (QHE) and magnetothermoelectric transport of Weyl semimetals in the presence of disorder. We obtain a bulk picture that the exotic 3D QHE emerges in a finite range of Fermi energy ne ar the Weyl points determined by the gap between the $n=-1$ and $n=1$ Landau levels (LLs). The quantized Hall conductivity is attributable to the chiral zeroth LLs traversing the gap, and is robust against disorder scattering for an intermediate number of layers in the direction of the magnetic field. Moreover, we predict several interesting characteristic features of the thermoelectric transport coefficients in the 3D QHE regime, which can be probed experimentally. This may open an avenue for exploring Weyl physics in topological materials.
We describe a new type of the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) that should occur in Weyl semimetals with an asymmetry in the dispersion relations of the left- and right-handed chiral Weyl fermions. In such materials, time-dependent pumping of electrons f rom a non-chiral external source generates a non-vanishing chiral chemical potential. This is due to the different capacities of the left- and right-handed (LH and RH) chiral Weyl cones arising from the difference in the density of states in the LH and RH cones. The chiral chemical potential then generates, via the chiral anomaly, a current along the direction of an applied magnetic field even in the absence of an external electric field. The source of chirality imbalance in this new setup is thus due to the band structure of the system and the presence of (non-chiral) electron source, and not due to the parallel electric and magnetic fields. We illustrate the effect by an argument based on the effective field theory, and by the chiral kinetic theory calculation for a rotationally invariant Weyl semimetal with different Fermi velocities in the left and right chiral Weyl cones; we also consider the case of a Weyl semimetal with Weyl nodes at different energies. We argue that this effect is generically present in Weyl semimetals with different dispersion relations for LH and RH chiral Weyl cones, such as SrSi2 recently predicted as a Weyl semimetal with broken inversion and mirror symmetries, as long as the chiral relaxation time is much longer than the transport scattering time.
Hydrodynamic instabilities driven by a direct current are analyzed in 2D and 3D relativisticlike systems with the Dyakonov-Shur boundary conditions supplemented by a boundary condition for the temperature. Besides the conventional Dyakonov-Shur insta bility for plasmons, we find an entropy wave instability in both 2D and 3D systems. The entropy wave instability is a manifestation of the relativisticlike nature of electron quasiparticles and a nontrivial role of the energy current in such systems. These two instabilities occur for the opposite directions of fluid flow. While the Dyakonov-Shur instability is characterized by the plasma frequency in 3D and the system size in 2D, the frequency of the entropy wave instability is tunable by the system size and the flow velocity.
