We address the shot noise in the tunneling current through a localized spin, pertaining to recent experiments on magnetic adatoms and single molecular magnets. We show that both uncorrelated and spin-correlated scattering processes contribute vitally to the noise spectrum. The spin-correlated scattering processes provide an additional contribution to the Landauer-Buttiker shot noise expression, accounting for correlations between the tunneling electrons and the localized spin moment. By calculating the Fano factor, we show that both super- and sub-Poissonian shot noise can be described within our approach. Our theory provides transparent insights to noise spectroscopy, consistent with recent experiments using local probing techniques on magnetic atoms.

The adiabatic transport properties of U(1) invariant systems are determined by the dependence of the ground state energy on the twisted boundary condition. We examine a one-dimensional tight-binding model in the presence of a single defect and find t hat the ground state energy of the model shows a universal dependence on the twist angle that can be fully characterized by the transmission coefficient of the scattering by the defect. We identify resulting pathological behaviors of Drude weights in the large system size limit: (i) both the linear and nonlinear Drude weights depend on the twist angle and (ii) the $N$-th order Drude weight diverges proportionally to the $(N-1)$-th power of the system size. To clarify the physical implication of the divergence, we simulate the real-time dynamics of the tight-binding model under a static electric field and show that the divergence does not necessarily imply the large current. Furthermore, we address the relation between our results and the boundary conformal field theory.

We study shot noise in tunneling current through a double quantum dot connected to two electric leads. We derive two master equations in the occupation-state basis and the eigenstate basis to describe the electron dynamics. The approach based on the occupation-state basis, despite widely used in many previous studies, is valid only when the interdot coupling strength is much smaller than the energy difference between the two dots. In contrast, the calculations using the eigenstate basis are valid for an arbitrary interdot coupling. We show that the master equation in the occupation-state basis includes only the low-order terms with respect to the interdot coupling compared with the more accurate master equation in the eigenstate basis. Using realistic model parameters, we demonstrate that the predicted currents and shot-noise properties from the two approaches are significantly different when the interdot coupling is not small. Furthermore, properties of the shot noise predicted using the eigenstate basis successfully reproduce qualitative features found in a recent experiment.
We analyze the equilibrium and non-equilibrium frequency-dependent spin current noise and spin conductance through a quantum dot in the local moment regime. Spin current correlations are shown to behave markedly differently from charge correlations: Equilibrium spin cross-correlations are suppressed at frequencies below the Kondo scale, and are characterized by a universal function that we determine numerically for zero temperature. For asymmetrical quantum dots dynamical spin accumulation resonance is found for frequencies of the order of the Kondo energy. At higher temperatures surprising low-frequency anomalies related to overall spin conservation appear.
Magnetic molecules and nanomagnets can be used to influence the electronic transport in mesoscopic junction. In a magnetic field the precessional motion leads to resonances in the dc- and ac-transport properties of a nanocontact, in which the electro ns are coupled to the precession. Quantities like the dc-conductance or the ac-response provide valuable information like the level structure and the coupling parameters. Here, we address the current noise properties of such contacts. This encompasses the charge current and spin-torque shot noise, which both show a step-like behavior as functions of bias voltage and magnetic field. The charge current noise shows pronounced dips around the steps, which we trace back to interference effects of electron in quasienergy levels coupled by the molecular spin precession. We show that some components of the noise of the spin-torque currents are directly related to the Gilbert damping and, hence, are experimentally accessible. Our results show that the noise characteristics allow to investigate in more detail the coherence of spin transport in contacts containing magnetic molecules.
It is expected that ion trap quantum computing can be made scalable through protocols that make use of transport of ion qubits between sub-regions within the ion trap. In this scenario, any magnetic field inhomogeneity the ion experiences during the transport, may lead to dephasing and loss of fidelity. Here we demonstrate how to measure, and compensate for, magnetic field gradients inside a segmented ion trap, by transporting a single ion over variable distances. We attain a relative magnetic field sensitivity of Delta B/B_0 ~ 5*10^{-7} over a test distance of 140 micro m, which can be extended to the mm range, still with sub micro m resolution. A fast experimental sequence is presented, facilitating its use as a magnetic field gradient calibration routine, and it is demonstrated that the main limitation is the quantum shot noise.
