We develop an analytic model that relates intensity correlation measurements performed by an image sensor to the properties of photon pairs illuminating it. Experiments using both an effective single-photon counting (SPC) camera and a linear electron-multiplying charge-coupled device (EMCCD) camera confirm the model.

Optical nanoantennas have shown a great capacity for efficient extraction of photons from the near to the far-field, enabling directional emission from nanoscale single-photon sources. However, their potential for the generation and extraction of mul ti-photon quantum states remains unexplored. Here we demonstrate experimentally the nanoscale generation of two-photon quantum states at telecommunication wavelengths based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in an optical nanoantenna. The antenna is a crystalline AlGaAs nanocylinder, possessing Mie-type resonances at both the pump and the bi-photon wavelengths and when excited by a pump beam generates photonpairs with a rate of 35 Hz. Normalized to the pump energy stored by the nanoantenna, this rate corresponds to 1.4 GHz/Wm, being one order of magnitude higher than conventional on-chip or bulk photon-pair sources. Our experiments open the way for multiplexing several antennas for coherent generation of multi-photon quantum states with complex spatial-mode entanglement and applications in free-space quantum communications and sensing.
We demonstrate a compact photon pair source based on a periodically poled lithium niobate nonlinear crystal in a cavity. The cavity parameters are chosen such that the emitted photon pair modes can be matched in the region of telecom ultra dense wave length division multiplexing (U-DWDM) channel spacings. This approach provides efficient, low-loss, mode selection that is compatible with standard telecommunication networks. Photons with a coherence time of 8.6 ns (116 MHz) are produced and their purity is demonstrated. A source brightness of 134 pairs(s.mW.MHz)$^{-1}$ is reported. The high level of purity and compatibility with standard telecom networks is of great importance for complex quantum communication networks.
Compared to traditional nonlinear optical crystals, like BaB$_2$O$_4$, KTiOPO$_4$ or LiNbO$_3$, semiconductor integrated sources of photon pairs may operate at pump wavelengths much closer to the bandgap of the materials. This is also the case for Br agg-reflection waveguides (BRW) targeting parametric down-conversion (PDC) to the telecom C-band. The large nonlinear coefficient of the AlGaAs alloy and the strong confinement of the light enable extremely bright integrated photon pair sources. However, under certain circumstances, a significant amount of detrimental broadband photoluminescence has been observed in BRWs. We show that this is mainly a result of linear absorption near the core and subsequent radiative recombination of electron-hole pairs at deep impurity levels in the semiconductor. For PDC with BRWs, we conclude that devices operating near the long wavelength end of the S-band or the short C-band require temporal filtering shorter than 1 ns. We predict that shifting the operating wavelengths to the L-band and making small adjustments in the material composition will reduce the amount of photoluminescence to negligible values. Such measures enable us to increase the average pump power and/or the repetition rate, which makes integrated photon pair sources with on-chip multi-gigahertz pair rates feasible.
3D time-of-flight (ToF) imaging is used in a variety of applications such as augmented reality (AR), computer interfaces, robotics and autonomous systems. Single-photon avalanche diodes (SPADs) are one of the enabling technologies providing accurate depth data even over long ranges. By developing SPADs in array format with integrated processing combined with pulsed, flood-type illumination, high-speed 3D capture is possible. However, array sizes tend to be relatively small, limiting the lateral resolution of the resulting depth maps, and, consequently, the information that can be extracted from the image for applications such as object detection. In this paper, we demonstrate that these limitations can be overcome through the use of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for high-performance object detection. We present outdoor results from a portable SPAD camera system that outputs 16-bin photon timing histograms with 64x32 spatial resolution. The results, obtained with exposure times down to 2 ms (equivalent to 500 FPS) and in signal-to-background (SBR) ratios as low as 0.05, point to the advantages of providing the CNN with full histogram data rather than point clouds alone. Alternatively, a combination of point cloud and active intensity data may be used as input, for a similar level of performance. In either case, the GPU-accelerated processing time is less than 1 ms per frame, leading to an overall latency (image acquisition plus processing) in the millisecond range, making the results relevant for safety-critical computer vision applications which would benefit from faster than human reaction times.
We calculate that an appropriate modification of the field associated with only one of the photons of a photon pair can suppress generation of the pair entirely. From this general result, we develop a method for suppressing the generation of undesire d photon pairs utilizing photonic stop bands. For a third-order nonlinear optical source of frequency-degenerate photons we calculate the modified frequency spectrum (joint spectral intensity) and show a significant increase in a standard metric, the coincidence to accidental ratio. These results open a new avenue for photon-pair frequency correlation engineering.
