We explore the stability of a recently found class of spinning dielectric M2-branes in the 11-dimensional maximally supersymmetric plane-wave background. We find two small windows of instabilities in the dipole (j=1) and quadrupole (j = 2) sector of linear multipole perturbations.

We investigate the large-N limit of the BMN matrix model by analyzing the dynamics of ellipsoidal M2-branes that spin in the 11-dimensional maximally supersymmetric SO(3)xSO(6) plane-wave background. We identify finite-energy solutions by specifying the local minima of the corresponding energy functional. These configurations are static in SO(3) due to the Myers effect and rotate in SO(6) with an angular momentum that is bounded from above. As a first step towards studying their chaotic properties, we evaluate the Lyapunov exponents of their radial fluctuations.
We study the leading (LO) and the next-to-leading order (NLO) stability of multipole perturbations for a static dielectric M2-brane with spherical topology in the 11-dimensional maximally supersymmetric plane-wave background. We observe a cascade of instabilities that originates from the dipole (j=1) and quadrupole (j=2) sectors (the only unstable sectors of the LO) and propagates towards all the multipoles of the NLO.
We study the matrix model for N M2-branes wrapping a Lens space L(p,1) = S^3/Z_p. This arises from localization of the partition function of the ABJM theory, and has some novel features compared with the case of a three-sphere, including a sum over f lat connections and a potential that depends non-trivially on p. We study the matrix model both numerically and analytically in the large N limit, finding that a certain family of p flat connections give an equal dominant contribution. At large N we find the same eigenvalue distribution for all p, and show that the free energy is simply 1/p times the free energy on a three-sphere, in agreement with gravity dual expectations.
We consider periodic arrays of M2-branes in the ABJM model in the spirit of a circle compactification to D2-branes in type IIA string theory. The result is a curious formulation of three-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in terms of fermions, seven transverse scalars, a non-dynamical gauge field and an additional scalar `dual gluon. Upon further T-duality on a transverse torus we obtain a non-manifest-Lorentz-invariant description of five-dimensional maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills. Here the additional scalar field can be thought of as the components of a two-form along the torus. This action can be viewed as an M-theory description of M5-branes on ${mathbb T}^3$.
We present an explicit matrix algebra regularization of the algebra of volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of the $n$-torus. That is, we approximate the corresponding classical Nambu brackets using $mathfrak{sl}(N^{lceiltfrac{n}{2}rceil},mathbb{C})$-ma trices equipped with the finite bracket given by the completely anti-symmetrized matrix product, such that the classical brackets are retrieved in the $Nrightarrow infty$ limit. We then apply this approximation to the super $4$-brane in $9$ dimensions and give a regularized action in analogy with the matrix regularization of the supermembrane. This action exhibits a reduced gauge symmetry that we discuss from the viewpoint of $L_infty$-algebras in a slight generalization to the construction of Lie $2$-algebras from Bagger-Lambert $3$-algebras.
