Using the functional renormalization group, we investigate the electron instability in the single-sheet BC$_3$ when the electron filling is near a type-II van Hove singularity. For a finite Hubbard interaction, the ferromagnetic-like spin density wave order dominates in the immediate vicinity of the singularity. Elsewhere near the singularity the p-wave superconductivity prevails. We also find that a small nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion can enhance the superconductivity. Our results show that BC$_3$ would be a promising candidate to realize topological $p+ip$ superconductivity, but the transition temperature is practically sizable only if the local interaction is moderately strong.

Comprehensive studies of the electronic states of Ir 5d and Te 5p have been performed to elucidate the origin of the structural phase transition in IrTe2 by combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. While no considerable changes are observed in the configuration of the Ir 5d electronic states across the transition, indicating that the Ir 5d orbitals are not involved in the transition, we reveal a van Hove singularity at the Fermi level (EF) related to the Te px+py orbitals, which is removed from EF at low temperatures. The wavevector connecting the adjacent saddle points is consistent with the in-plane projection of the superstructure modulation wavevector. These results can be qualitatively understood with the Rice-Scott saddle-point mechanism, while effects of the lattice distortions need to be additionally involved.

A mechanism of self-organized one-dimensionality in correlated electron system coupled to optical phonon mode is proposed. It is found that a lattice vibration may compactify electron motion effectively to a one-dimensional space and trigger quantum phase transition into ordered state with extended van Hove singularities in the electronic Floquet modes spectrum. This mechanism may be of relevance for observed enhancement of the ordering instability in the anti-nodal regions of the Fermi surface in the high-Tc cuprates, which is accompanied by anomalous softening of some optical phonon modes. A destruction of the effect by special microwave radiation is predicted, followed by a partial release of the zero-point vibration energy of the coupled optical phonon mode.
Twisted graphene bilayers (TGBs) have low-energy van Hove singularities (VHSs) that are strongly localized around AA-stacked regions of the moire pattern. Therefore, they exhibit novel many-body electronic states, such as Mott-like insulator and unco nventional superconductivity. Unfortunately, these strongly correlated states were only observed in magic angle TGBs with the twist angle theta~1.1{deg}, requiring a precisely tuned structure. Is it possible to realize exotic quantum phases in the TGBs not limited at the magic angle? Here we studied electronic properties of a TGB with theta~1.64{deg} and demonstrated that a VHS splits into two spin-polarized states flanking the Fermi energy when the VHS is close to the Fermi level. Such a result indicates that localized magnetic moments emerge in the AA-stacked regions of the TGB. Since the low-energy VHSs are quite easy to be reached in slightly TGBs, our result therefore provides a facile direction to realize novel quantum phases in graphene system.
The recently discovered layered kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A=K, Rb, Cs) exhibit diverse correlated phenomena, which are intertwined with a topological electronic structure with multiple van Hove singularities (VHSs) in the vicinity of the Fermi leve l. As the VHSs with their large density of states enhance correlation effects, it is of crucial importance to determine their nature and properties. Here, we combine polarization-dependent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy with density functional theory to directly reveal the sublattice properties of 3d-orbital VHSs in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. Four VHSs are identified around the M point and three of them are close to the Fermi level, with two having sublattice-pure and one sublattice-mixed nature. Remarkably, the VHS just below the Fermi level displays an extremely flat dispersion along MK, establishing the experimental discovery of higher-order VHS. The characteristic intensity modulation of Dirac cones around K further demonstrates the sublattice interference embedded in the electronic structure. The crucial insights into the electronic structure, revealed by our work, provide a solid starting point for the understanding of the intriguing correlation phenomena in the kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$.
In the context of the relaxation time approximation to Boltzmann transport theory, we examine the behavior of the Hall number, $n_H$, of a metal in the neighborhood of a Lifshitz transition from a closed Fermi surface to open sheets. We find a univer sal non-analytic dependence of $n_H$ on the electron density in the high field limit, but a non-singular dependence at low fields. The existence of an assumed nematic transition produces a doping dependent $n_H$ similar to that observed in recent experiments in the high temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-x}$.
